From the President

It is with sadness we note the recent passing of Dudley Lewis, a very long term member of the society, most active in the portrait group in recent years. He could also be seen happily sketching at every opportunity at our society events and about town. He once told me a secret to improving your sketching by minimizing impediments to beginning a sketch. By reducing his sketching materials to just a pencil and sketch book, it was always to hand and a sketch could be started simply by opening the book. And to ensure that the sketch book did not leave the house with its partner pencil, he attached the pencil to the front of the sketch book with a piece of Velcro. As he made his own sketch books (cheaply and simply), this was easy to do – he’d simply swap the hard covers to each new sketch book. Many will miss Dudley, but none will forget him.

The day after Dudley passed away, Michelle Harris advised that her father, John Hipwell, also passed away at the age of 93. Until then, there were three generations in the society, himself, Michelle, and also one of his grand-daughters, Rose. Quite amazingly, John was able to exhibit two watercolours in our 2016 Newcastle Art Prize, a wonderful achievement that we’d all hope to emulate at his age! Apparently his later works were quite impressionistic due to his failing eyesight.

Our Treasurer, Jenni Gander, advised the committee that analysis of expenditure and income for the 2016 Newcastle Art Prize revealed a small profit, allowing us to commit to a donation of $500 to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club. The society is pleased to be able to continue it’s support to this worthy charity that does so much to improve the equipment and outcomes for sick children using the hospital’s facilities.

Finally, talking of our much loved Treasurer, congratulations to Jenni and her husband Bill, who recently moved close to the rooms near down-town New Lambton. Argh, don’t we all aspire to be able to walk to the society’s rooms from home!?

Society News

Phil Munn – July Members’ Meeting Guest Speaker

Phil gave a very interesting talk about two diverse aspects of his art – re-use of historical Japanese wood cuts and highly impasto impressionistic oil paintings.

Always inspired by old Japanese woodcuts, Phil found that many of them have no copyright as they became generic items of heritage with no specific ownership. In a form of modern homage to those beautiful images, Phil used his own photos of poppies and so on, to form collages melding old and new. The results are large vertical and horizontal framed giclee prints. Although Phil lashed out on his own giclee printer, he would not recommend it as the initial cost is very high and the printing set up challenging.

Contrasting with these prints, it was a wonder that his impasto oil landscapes could come from the same per-son. He allows oil paint to partially dry on old jam lids and other discarded kitchen containers, then scrapes them onto the canvas with fresh paint to form semi-random areas of raised impasto surface. Onto these he scumbles white paint and paints the surrounding areas to give the impression of an aerial landscape, such as the Kakadu wetlands that he visited recently. A fascinating talk by a self-made artist forging his own unique journey.

Group discussion developed around these two, reflecting an enthusiasm of interpretation that

must have made Phil smile quietly to himself. It was a fascinating presentation indeed!

VALE—DUDLEY LEWIS and JOHN HIPWELL

We lost two very special members of our Society last week, Dudley Lewis and John Hipwell, and within a day

of each other. Hugh tells us a little more about John (age 93) in his president’s report (this edition) and the

three generations of that family that were society members all at the same time. Hugh also has a few words

about Dudley, including some helpful advice that Dudley gave him, as he did for many of us (editor included!)

I asked Jim Woodbury, a long time friend of Dudley, if he could give me some comments about him. Jim

responded as follows:-

“Dudley was an excellent artist and a fine craftsman. He worked in oils ,acrylic and watercolour and was a

master of all these mediums. He had a particular interest in the human figure especially portraiture, as well

as landscape and still life. he was a highly skilled draughtsman and excelled at life drawing. He practised his

skills constantly and was rarely seen without his sketchbook! He was a gifted teacher, always ready to share

his knowledge and ideas. He was always keen to help and encourage others and many, many people have

benefitted from his advice and aid.”

From the Executive Committee

An advance booking for the Raymond Terrace exhibition is being sought for around September 2017 so as

not to clash with the Newcastle Art Prize exhibition in July 2017.

Our Art Director Lee-Anne Corrigan has suggested the Society conduct a day of volunteer demonstrators to

help members learn new techniques with different mediums and styles of art. This is in the formative stage

yet, but it will be advertised and Lee-Anne will respond to enquiries and interest in the meantime.

Valentine Market Day in November 2016

We have been approached by the organising committee to participate in a “Market Day” at the Valentine

public school on Saturday 5 November 2016 by setting up an exhibition of artworks for sale. The market day

planned is anticipated to be spread over the school oval and within a large hall / covered area adjacent. We

are being offered the stage area of the hall for our exhibition and we will be visiting to meet the organisers

and survey the space and conditions, next Tuesday 9 August.

Our committee at the moment is quite interested in participating. It will require volunteers from our society

to set up and manage the display, etc., and will of course be dependent on the support of our artists in

coming forward with quality artworks for display and sale.

This has been done there in the past, I believe. It should be a good time to have it, soon before Christmas.

If it is confirmed, we will have an entry form and more details in the next newsletter. It might be a good idea

to have a look at what you have got or what you may do, in the meantime. Local scenes are always popular,

but a variety creates interest!

Weekend Workshops

8/9 October 2016 Judith White MIXED MEDIA—FORM & DYNAMICS OF INTERIOR SPACE $160

Judith White is a renowned Australian and worldwide artist. She returns for another great weekend of mixed media. This workshop will focus on the idea of form in spaces that are more intimate and inclusive, rather than the dimensions of landscape or expansive environment. While still-life is part of this parameter, the emphasis will be on abstraction and contemporary design within this genre. Issues of depth of field, suggesting space outside the picture plane, and dealing with positive and negative shape on equal terms will be a feature. Creative process with an emphasis on personal expression will the basis for the workshop. Materials List As the materials list is extensive, attendees should request a copy of this from the Art Director, please.

Australian Society of Marine Artists. We are also lucky enough to have him as a member of our Society.

focussing around creating pictorial interest through mood and atmosphere and the advantages of developing

a limited palette and the use of aerial perspective. He will bring along a range of paintings and photographic

examples complementing this topic and talk through his personal ideas to encourage each participant.

Warwick also wants to set a couple of Marine/Landscape subjects from individual participants’ own imagina-

tion which will be discussed in the class and developed in regard to the theme of the workshop.
