Activity 34 What is This Part?
Judith has just installed a new printer that can also scan documents. She is unsure how
this will work and what type of documents she can scan so she has called in a technician.
How would you re-order the technician’s answers to make them follow a logical order?
Judith If I have a letter I want to scan into the computer where do I put it and how?
Technician Flat under the lid.
Judith Ok, now which way? Can I only put A4 paper in? What if it is smaller?
Technician Doesn’t matter which way or size ‘cos the computer can change it. Except if it is too big. But the screen takes bigger than A4.
Judith Now, I lie the letter under the lid – does it face up or down?
Technician Like a copier or fax – always face down.
Judith OK, now what happens?
Technician Press the scan button to scan – oh yeah, make sure the power is on too!
Judith That’s it?
Technician The computer will scan the document into the system and ask you if you want to print or email or save it to another document. You can change the colour, contrast, brightness and position of the document or anything you want to scan.

Activity 70 Arguing with statistics
Sometimes numbers or statistics that tell you things do not really mean
what they say.
News Report:
“50% of young people use the Internet every day”
That sounds OK but how do we know that statistic is reliable?
Let’s check the group of people who were asked the question.
How old were these young people? “All were 20”
Were they working or studying? “No – nothing”
How many young people were asked? “10”
– Hmmm… does not seem enough people or enough different people to make that
statement true!
What about this collection of information?
