Why Social Networking?

•facebook alone has 400 Million+ users•LinkedIn – 60 Million+ 50% in U.S.•Twitter – 65 Million + growing very fast•Your prospective candidates/clients use them•Plan for the future•Your competition is doing it!

What sites to use?•Go to http://mashable.com/ and do some reading

There are plenty to choose from, but I use Twitter, facebook, LinkedIn and ping.fm.

My picks because:•LinkedIn – Wide network (7,588 direct connections)•Facebook – Local and better known network (1,500+friends)•Twitter – quick information gathering and relay (know what a hash tag is?? #•Ping.fm – ping all my networks at once – cell phone

Build your networks!•You are compensated in direct relation to the value you provide to your network….remember this!

•If your prospective candidate/client doesn’t see value in connecting with you, they won’t. So let them know...i.e. “I specialize in helping xyz professionals with their careers.”

•Be the expert for your niche – this will make showing “value” much easier

•Leverage your largest network to build the others…i.e. use your LinkedIn network to build facebook…many won’t accept, but if you show value, it’s not a waste of time.

•Use the sites! 80 of Twitter users have less than 12 tweets! Be the exception!

Integration•Make sure to set up profiles on at least 3 sites – helps build your networks faster

•Don’t duplicate your efforts! i.e. don’t post jobs to each site individually.

•Twitter, ping.fm (others too) can touch most major sites, so you can hit all your networks at once.

•Look at each of your sites and find the twitter (other) linking method

Time vs. Return•This is the tough part – don’t become a social media addict….seriously… - symptoms include checking updates before you brush your teeth in the morning.

•You need to schedule your social time into your day

•You can use sites like www.tweetdeck.com and others to provide a simple viewing platform.

Additional Items•Watch your posts! Keep them professional, some people don’t get your jokes

•Plug into networks for information, i.e. mashable, keep up with the market!

•Each site is constantly adding upgraded features to help make your life even easier – i.e. adding presentations to LinkedIn or a link to your blog.
