Setting up devices safely

Many devices, especially Apple, have security and accessibilitysettings that can help secure the type and levels of informationusers are able to access on devices. You might like to considersome of the following tips to help make children's use ofdevices safer. 'Guided access' will lock users into using justthe app that is open. This is useful for parents to know, asyou can ensure that your child is only able to access the appthat you open for them and not browse or open other appswithout the passcode you set. Please refer to the picture belowfor guidance.

More on our spelling focus at Eumundi StateSchool

Previous newsletters have outlined that spelling is an area offocus in 2018, and while implementing the spellingrequirements of the Australian Curriculum, teachers are furtherenhancing their approach to teaching spelling through theWords their Way spelling program. The Words their Wayprogram is keyed to the five stages of spelling development. These five stages are

What are the key characteristics of each spellingstage?

Emergent Stage

The emergent stage encompasses the writing efforts of childrenwho are not yet reading conventionally and in most caseshave not been exposed to formal reading instruction. Emergentwriting may be divided into a series of steps where childrenmove from producing scribbles that are undecipherable fromdrawings, to something that looks like scribbles separate from apicture, on to using letters to represent some sounds in words.Moving from this stage to the next stage hinges on learning thatletters represent sounds, and words can be segmented intosequences of sound from left to right.

Letter name–alphabetic stage

This stage involves the period where students are first formallytaught to read. Early in this stage students use the names ofletters as cues to the sounds they want to represent. As thestudents move through this stage, they learn to segment theindividual sounds within words and to match an appropriateletter or letter pairs to those sounds. In the later part of thisstage, students will use most beginning and ending consonantsand spell many high frequency words correctly.

Within word pattern stage

Students entering this stage can read and spell many wordscorrectly. This stage sees students move away from a soundby sound approach to begin to use patterns or chunks ofletters. The focus of this stage is on patterns, for example, the effect of ‘e’ at the end of words like in time and game;common long vowel patterns like in t ea m and r oa d; andmore difficult vowel patterns which involve words that containthe same vowel pattern that represent different sounds, suchas the ou in mouth, cough, through and tough.

Syllables and affixes stage

This stage represents a point where students consider patternswhere syllables meet and the meaning of parts of words suchas affixes (prefixes and suffixes). Students in this stage are mostoften between 8 and 12 years old.

Derivational relations stage

This stage is the final stage and involves students studyinghow many words are derived from base words (for example, favourite is derived from favour and different is from differ) andword roots. Word study in this stage builds on and expandsknowledge of a wide vocabulary, including numerous wordsfrom Greek and Latin origin.

Knowing the spelling stage each student is at allows ourteachers to identify appropriate teaching and learning activitieswhich will help focus instruction where it is needed to movestudents towards the next stage of spelling development. Nextarticle will look at some of the teaching and learning activitiesthat can be seen in our classrooms to further develop spellingcapabilities in our students (see an example of one activity fromYear 4B).

4C - LEARNING ABOUT SUSTAINABILITYAs part of our inquiry unit about sustainability and waste, wewere lucky enough to have Molly W and her mum, Wendy, tell us about their family’s experiences living in communitiesin Arnhem Land and Central Australia. We learnt about thesustainability of traditional hunting methods. We also found outabout how the different seasons guided what food is foundand used. We saw some art works including beautifully wovenbaskets and painted musical instruments. It sounds like Molly’sfamily had an amazing time and they learnt so much.

CARTOON CLUBStudents have the chance to do some cartooning as one of thelunchtime clubs. We watch video tutorials of cartooning experts

that show how to break down the parts of an awesome pictureinto manageable steps. Students then make their own fantasticsketch.

EUMUNDI STATE SCHOOL COMPOSTPROGRAMME

The students of Eumundi State School have now had theircompost system successfully operating for over a term – quitean amazing feat.

Our system is based on a 3-step process…

Class Management (step 1)

At fruit break, the students from each class put their fruit scrapsinto their class compost bin. After little lunch, class helpersempty the bins into one of the four larger collection bins.

Grade Management (step 2)

After big lunch, the class representatives from Year Five (andtheir helpers) take one of the four larger bins to empty into ourworm-farms, then wash the bins before returning them.

Worm-Wizz (step 3)

From the worm-farm comes our Worm-Wizz! This fantasticfertilising product is sold at the Eumundi Markets everyWednesday by our Year Six students. It is a natural fertiliser thatis super helpful in making your gardens grow!

MUSIC NotesThe next event for our Choir Members is KIDSING, which is afull day event at Coolum State School on Friday 24th August.

This will be run as a combined choral concert, including 6 otherlocal schools. To expand the event this year and provide furtheropportunities for students, the choirs will perform for each otherin the morning and with the guidance of a guest conductor andaccompanist there will be a performance of a massed choir forparents to attend in the afternoon.

Look out for more information with notes being sent home thefirst week in Term 3.

Reporting time

Well it is that time of the term to put downan indicator of your child’s learning atEumundi SS.

Early musical training helps develop brainareas involved in language and reasoning. It is thought thatbrain development continues for many years after birth. Studieshave clearly indicated that musical training physically developsthe part of the left side of the brain known to be involved withprocessing language, and it can actually wire the brain's circuitsin specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information canalso help imprint information on young minds.

The evidence of neuroscience overwhelmingly demonstratesthat children studying music have a considerable educationaladvantage over those who don't. Because of the essentiallyaural nature of music, together with the requirements of intenselistening and concentration, the child's brain respondspowerfully to music education, enhancing all other learning.

Our presentation for the CWA International Day in week 10 willdemonstrate this. Preps will sing a familiar colour song withactions, which the Year 2’s will translate and sing in German. You will also see a popular dance of the culture and the choirwill sing the Elvis hit ‘Wooden Heart’ (also in German). Awonderful display of class art will be on show as 2CP give usan informed talk on Germany and its costumes and customs, before we all get up and move to the ‘Chicken Dance’.

Instrumental Music News

This year students have been introduced to the new methodtext book “Sound Innovations” and the new curriculum inmusic. The fundamental difference now is that students willneed to demonstrate core knowledge, technical expertise andperformance ability on their instrument.

The three main areas of assessment are:

The above criteria for assessment will reflect these areas of yourchild’s musicality.

Instrumental Music is co-curricular and is delivered in twostreams:

Regular attendance at both is required for all students enrolledin the Instrumental Music program.

Recently I have invited all beginners to join in with bandrehearsals first thing on Friday morning. The results areencouraging and as more and more students arrive, the soundis getting seriously awesome. So far this term, the band hasperformed walk around tours of the school and they learned toplay ‘Ol’ MacDonald’s Farm’ by memory. All students should bemaking an appearance in band now so please make an effortto get to school by 7:45am every Friday morning.

I hope you’re hearing your child regularly practising on theirinstrument at home. Use the CD in the book for backing tracks(if necessary) and you’ll have a band sound in no time. I cannotemphasise the importance of regular home practice toguarantee improvement in music, confidence and generalwellbeing. Please get them playing as often as possible for bestresults.

Thank you everyone and see you all next week at band.

CHAPPY CHATRecently I have had many conversations with different peoplein our school community and the conversation generally startswith “So you’re the Chaplain?” and then ”What exactly doesa Chaplain do?” So I would like to take this opportunity to tellyou a little bit about what I do. You can find me at schoolon Tuesday, Wednesday and every 2nd Friday. The role of aChaplain varies and no one Chaplain does the same thing, aswe are able to cater specifically to the needs of our students, families and school community as a whole.

My role is to provide social and emotional support to students, families and staff. I do this in many different ways dependingon the student and their families. Sometimes I’m working in thegarden with them, making craft, kicking a ball, building Lego, walking the oval or just sitting and talking through what’s goingon for a student and supporting them. My aim is to encouragestudents to grow in an emotional sense to be able to build uponskills that encourage positive friendships and relationships. Forthem to be able to overcome issues such as anxiety, friendshipissues, building resilience and to ask for help. Also to learn howto look after themselves and others in relation to our emotional, social and mental health. My passion is to walk alongside othersto make kindness, understanding, empathy and being positivea top priority in our connections with others. I also encourageall people to reach their potential, to have a purpose in life andbuild positive relationships.

I run the ‘Dragonfly’ Program for Year 5 girls to guide them inhow to build their friendship skills and resilience and give themthe opportunity to talk about any issues they may be facing.I also run the Triple P Parenting Program, Friendship groups,one-on-one mentoring and lunch time activities. I supportfamilies going through separation, loss and relationshipproblems. My room is open most lunch times for the studentsto come in and hang out, play some games and quite oftenchat about life. Also every Wednesday morning you can find medown at the Markets selling Worm Wizz with the Year 6 leaders.
