Middlesbrough Street Warden Service
THE PURPOSE OF STREET WARDENS
• Undertake visible patrols, with the primary purpose of:– Reducing crime and the fear of crime– Reducing and resolving environmental
disturbance– Engaging young people in diversionary activities– Engaging with the wider community
WHAT DO STREET WARDENS DO?
• Deal with episodes of anti-social behaviour• Gather evidence• Report environmental disturbance• Report to relevant agencies• Act as an expert witness• Divert and educate perpetrators of ASB• Act as an information point
WHAT STREET WARDENS CANNOT DO
• Deal directly with criminal activity• Remove alcohol• Confiscate motorbikes and other nuisance items• Demand names• Issue Fixed Penalty Fines• Attend incidents after 10pm• Detain people against their will
HOW WE LINK WITH OTHER AGENCIES
• Police– Aim (tasking and intelligence)– Problem solving groups– Local area meetings– Intelligence gathering– Act as an expert witness

STREET WARDEN STRUCTURE
• 1 Manager• 3 Shift managers (2 on duty at any given time)• 1 Engagement and Activities Coordinator• 13 “Home based” areas - each with permanent warden
presence– 39 wardens (26 on duty at any given time)
• Dedicated “Town Centre” wardens– 7 wardens (5 on duty at any given time)
• Responsive warden resource– 12 wardens (8 on duty at any given time)
TIMES OF OPERATION
• Home based and Responsive Wardens– 2.00pm - 10.00pm– 7 days per week
• Town Centre Wardens– 11.00am - 7.00pm– 7 days per week

ACTIVITY DATA
• Since July 2006 Street Wardens have:– undertaken 4736 patrols– dealt with 13,200 incidents– managed 168 engagement/diversionary activities– involved 7515 in Boro Buzz people in these events– attended 105 community meetings– referred 13,200 incidents to other agencies
• On average a street warden will walk 8 miles per day
