As nearly all of the team had been affected by cancer in some way, whether it

was with a family member or friend, they decided almost immediately to create a

project around that theme. Like many other NCS young people before them, this

Social Action Project became a personal mission that meant something to the whole

team. Forming an event called Taste a Nation; the aim was to not only increase

the happiness of those suffering with cancer, but also to raise awareness of The

Macmillan Cancer Trust itself.

The event was a great success and the main idea (quite literally) went down a

treat: food from a variety of different cultures was prepared by the team and

served at different stalls. At the same time; presentations about Macmillan and

the work they do were given by speakers from the Trust. It was an awesome day

for both the team and all those who attended. The team have not only become

great friends throughout their time on NCS, but have also made other friends

through the Taste a Nation event – a testimony of their success!

Aside from the usual fund-raising and charity awareness, the team decided to do

something slightly different from the norm. Their aim was to bring the local

community closer together and improve the reputation of teenagers. Full of drive

and determination the team got stuck into their project straight away, coming up

with the idea to hold a mini music festival that they named ‘Glastonferry’.

The event attracted local bands and was even featured in the local newspaper,

‘The Northern Echo’. The festival got so much interest from the local community

that team members Kieran and Lauren were invited to Spark Radio to talk about

the event!

The team arranged a special community day with the single intention of

raising awareness of the difficulties others face in life. Bringing together

a range of different generations, the event allowed both the young and

old to interact and share each other’s issues – improving the relationship

between the two groups – something the team definitely achieved!

Organising a clean-up of the local river Ouse, the team completely cleared

it of litter. The community was so impressed by their efforts that many

local people came to help. Once this clean-up was completed the team

organised a fundraising event in the Brackley area to raise money for

equipment, fish and plants. The team made such an impact on the

community that they got recognition from the local Mayor!

Join the Adventure...

They’ve revamped local parks, skate parks, even

wildlife parks. Designed anything from posters and

leaflets to gardens and ponds. They’ve held gigs,

community events, made videos, written poetry,

written songs; performed those songs, performed

those songs at the gigs they’ve organized! It’s

been up to them, and it can be up to you to.
