What is a Fundamental motor skill?

• Fundamental motor skills are movements. They include:

skills such as running, vertical jumping, leaping, dodging, kicking, one handed strike and two handed strike, punting, throwing and catching.

• Hear are some of the fundamental motor skills performed in soccer.

Dodging

• Dodging is a very important motor skill to have in Soccer.

• Dodging is a skill and is performed by changing direction in a very fast motion.

• Lots of soccer players do dodging in a soccer game to get around the oppositions and to the end of the their field.

• Goal keepers do not perform this motor skill at all.

Catching

• As you are not allowed to touch the ball with your hands in soccer, catching the ball by a soccer player does not happen however a goal keeper is allowed to touch the ball so it doesn’t go into the goals.

• Catching the ball by a goal keeper is the only way to see his fundamental motor skill in soccer.

• There are a few types of different ways to catch a ball in soccer two of them are below the waist and above the waist/head.

One Handed Strike

• The one handed strike is only performed by a goal keeper. It is shown when the ball is heading towards the goal and the goalie hits it away with one hand.

• It can also be performed by a soccer player however it wouldn’t be called a one handed strike as they use their head but they do use only one part of their body.

Vertical Jump

• A vertical jump is when a person jumps straight up into the air to catch or punt the ball.

• A goal keeper performs a vertical jump when the ball is heading towards the goals and the goal keeper needs to tape it away.

• It may also be performed by a soccer player when they are head butting it.
