Joanne MontagueVia Belmeloro 1840123 Bologna

Dear Ms Montague,

As you are probably aware, the recent smoking ban has had a profound impact on our business. Our sales have dropped 40 percent in the last six months. Though we do not expect this to be a long-term concern for our business, we don't expect sales to return to normal until the summer when our patio opens for the tourist season.

Due to the loss in business we regret to inform you that we are laying-off all of our hosts and hostesses for the winter and spring. With business being so slow our servers can handle the task of greeting and seating customers on their own.

You are entitled to two week's severance pay, which will be paid in full on your next paycheck. Please come in for any scheduled shifts next week.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication at Pino's Pizzaria. Please apply again for our next summer season.

Sincerely,

The following text is for questions 22 to 24Francesco Redi was an Italian scientist, physician, academician and poet. He was the first person to prove that spontaneous generation did not cause the growth of maggots in decaying meat, but they appeared from eggs deposited by flies.

Born in Arezzo, Central Italy in 1626, Francesco Redi received a Jesuit education. He acquired a degree in medicine and philosophy from the University of Pisa in 1647.

After staying in Naples, Venice, and Rome for a while, Francesco Redi visited Florence in 1654, where he succeeded his father as a court physician to Ferdinando II, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He became a member of the Accademia della Crusca in 1655. He was appointed the administrator of the famous Accademia del Cimento, a fraternity of the finest Italian scientists who upheld the scientific tradition of Galileo.

Redi soon gained a reputation throughout Europe as one of the most reputed biologists after he published “Esperienze intorno alla generazione degl’insetti” in 1668 (English: Experiments on the Generation of Insects). The work still remains highly influential in history for effectively rejecting the

The following text is for questions 25 to 27.Stable economy key to successful redenomination: BI

Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Agus Martowardojo has said a stable economy is the key to the successful implementation of the redenomination that will replace Rp 1,000 of the old currency with the new Rp 1.

“We want to make sure that the redenomination will be successful, but one of the keys is that it takes place when the country’s economy is stable and in good condition,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Agus said that in 2013, domestic economic growth was corrected and the impacts of global fluctuations could still be felt in 2014.

“The US Federal Reserve’s monetary stimulus has been reduced while domestically, the inflation rate in 2013 has increased, exceeding the targets expected,” said Agus.

Moreover, he said, Indonesia’s current account was predicted to remain at a deficit of 3.5 percent until the end of 2013 and the weakening of rupiah exchange rate was still a challenge for the country’s economy this year.

“To ensure the redenomination’s targets can be achieved, it would be better that we don’t push ourselves to implement this in a less than proper situation,” said Agus.

Similarly, Deputy BI Governor Ronald Waas said one of requirements for the implementation of the redenomination was the stable economy and political situation.

“The current economic situation is less conducive to implementing the redenomination,” said Ronald, while mentioning the redenomination plan would still continue.

“The President’s directives must go on. The House of Representatives has established a special committee while public discussions have taken place,” he added. (ebf)

The following text is for questions 28 to 30.

Lesothosaurus diagnosticus was one of the most primitive and earliest ornithischians, or "bird-hipped" dinosaurs. Ornithischians were one of the two major groups of dinosaurs and included such familiar species as the armor-plated Stegosaurus and Ankylosaurus and the three-horned Triceratops.

Lesothosaurus was small, agile, and bipedal, bearing seemingly little resemblance to the gigantic, quadrupedal ornithischians that came later. But physical features, such as hip structure and jaws and teeth designed to chew plants, link Lesothosaurus to the later ornithischians.

Lesothosaurus evolved in what is now southern Africa in the early Jurassic period, just over 200 million years ago. It gets its name from the African country of Lesotho, where early fossils were uncovered.

The lifestyle of Lesothosaurus has been compared with that of modern-day gazelles, which browse on low-growing vegetation and nervously scan their surroundings for danger, fleeing when a predator approaches too near.

Lesothosaurus had a small head with very large eyes, short front legs with grasping hands, and an elongated body and tail about three feet (one meter) long. Its jaws were lined with small, serrated teeth for shredding plants and, like most ornithischians, its mouth was tipped with a pointed beak. Long, muscular legs, hollow bones, and clawed feet would have allowed this lightweight dinosaur to outsprint or outmaneuver most of its predators.

Lesothosaurus likely died out by the mid-Jurassic, but later ornithischians thrived for some 150 million years until the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

The following text is for questions 31 to 34.

Why is Education so Important?Aristotle said, “The educated differ from the uneducated as much as the living from the dead.” If we want to understand and live life we need to seek an education. The courses and textbooks teach us how to think logically, mathematically, and scientifically. The classroom environment teaches us how to think emotionally, rationally, and socially. Our intelligence grows out of what we know and learn.

Knowledge unlocks human potential. As we learn, we can pull ourselves out of poverty and oppression. We can take control of our lives.

With increased learning and knowledge, we are more able to support our families and ourselves.  Having a college degree shows hard work and dedication. We will be more likely to be considered for promotions and be better able to change jobs or careers, if needed.

The majority of college graduates earn higher salaries than those with little or no higher education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that those with advanced degrees earned about two times the median weekly earnings for those with a high school diploma or equivalent. Unemployment levels are also significantly lower for those carrying a college degree.

School teaches us how to live and how to function in society. These simple principles are repeated from kindergarten to college graduation. Without education we lose the little rules that make living possible.

We come to understand humanity through our educational experiences. We learn the basic social standards of our culture and look into the standards of other cultures. Surrounded by diverse classmates we learn together and from each other. We form relationships. We learn to work together. We learn to respect one another’s opinions. We learn how to ask questions and most importantly we learn how to listen.

Education is the pathway to the future we want.  Going to college and gaining a higher education allows us to develop our skills and abilities. We can be more prepared for the workforce. We can meet the challenges of today and tomorrow with confidence.  Our increased knowledge and degree can help us earn more money. Why is education so important? Without education, as described by Aristotle, we just might not be living life.

The following text is for questions 35 to 38.Why global warming happens?

Have you ever heard of "global warming"? This is the name for the condition, or phenomenon, of a gradually rising temperature on Earth. When you catch a cold or become ill, you get a fever, right? In a similar way, the Earth's "body temperature" is steadily increasing. Now, do you know what causes this phenomenon?

Every day, the Earth receives light from the sun, whether it's a sunny day, cloudy day, or rainy day. The Earth's surface reflects this heat from the sun, or "solar heat," as something called "infrared rays," and sends it back out into space. If this were all that happened, however, no solar heat would stay on Earth. The Earth would in fact be a very cold planet today, with a temperature of minus 18 degrees Celsius (-0.4 degrees Fahrenheit), and with no people, or any other living things, capable of actually living on it.

Fortunately for us, though, the Earth is surrounded by a thin, invisible layer that absorbs some of these infrared rays and sends others back to Earth. Thanks to this layer, our home planet is much warmer: about 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) on average. We simply couldn't live on Earth without this layer.

Earth is just like a greenhouse—one of those see-through buildings where people grow vegetables—or a glasshouse in a botanical garden for tropical plants. That's why this is called the "greenhouse effect," which means that the Earth keeps warm because of the invisible layer that surrounds it.

Recently, this layer has gotten thicker and thicker, meaning that this layer is absorbing more of the hot infrared rays and sending more of them back down to Earth. As a result, our planet is getting warmer and warmer.

The following text is for questions 39 to 42.

Is fashion harmful to society?Zoos were originally set up so that people could see and learn about wild animals from distant lands. As more and more people became city-dwellers, never seeing animals in the wild, zoos began to house local creatures too. However, in today’s world, are zoos necessary?

Since people can now see any sort of wild animal in its natural habitat, simply by tuning into a TV program or buying a video, some animal rights activists claim that zoos are out of date. They argue that it is cruel to capture animals, transport them long distances, and then keep them caged up simply for the entertainment of human beings. Captive animals often develop ‘zoochosis’ – abnormal behavior like rocking or swaying – which indicates they are bored and unhappy in their prison-like conditions.

On the other hand, there is a huge difference between watching an animal on screen and seeing it in real life. It could be argued that visiting a zoo is educational, often increasing people’s concern for wildlife and conservation, which is of great importance in today's developing – and often overdeveloped – world. Indeed, sometimes the only way to save an endangered species may be to arrange for it to be breed in captivity.

Behind the scenes, zoos also provide scientists with opportunities to research into animal behavior: modern zoos can therefore be much better planned than old-fashioned ones, providing animals with carefully designed enclosures appropriate to their needs. It seems then, that there are still arguments for retaining zoos. These should, however, be carefully planned with the animals’ welfare in mind: in the modern world, there is no excuse for keeping animals in cramped or cruel conditions.

39. The passage tells about …A. The function of Zoo for science.B. The controversy on zoo existence.C. Zoo as the experimental laboratory.D. Zoo as a natural habitat for animals.E. The importance of zoo as a conservation.

40. Who opposes the animal placement in the zoo?A. Scientists.B. City dwellers.C. Animal breeders.D. Educated persons.E. Animal rights activists.

41. Which statement is CORRECT according to the text?A. Scientists argue that the zoos are out of date.B. Scientists catch animals to develop zoochosist.C. City dwellers protest the cruelly capture of animal.D. Visiting a zoo can increase people’s interest in wildlife.E. Watching animal on TV and in the zoo give people same sense.

42. From the text, we can conclude that …A. Animal right activists support modern zoo.B. Zoo is used just for keeping animals for distant lands.C. Modern zoo is built by considering the animal welfare.D. Animal research is the only way to save endangered species.

The following text is for questions 43 to 46.Carrie

Carrie is a simple, almost painfully naive girl who is socially awkward as a result of her extremely sheltered upbringing. Her fellow students shun her rather than attempt to understand her. Carrie's utter lack of social skills also makes her an easy target for her victimizers. The passive aggressiveness she faces turns into blatant bullying during one harrowing incident.

While showering after gym class she has her period for the first time and not knowing what it means, thinks she is bleeding to death. The other girls in the locker room realize that she doesn't know what's going on and laugh at her. They are merciless in their mockery and reduce the poor girl to tears. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Greer) comes to her aid and sends the stricken girl home to her mother.

Later, student Sue Snell (Wilde) tries to make good with Carrie by allowing her boyfriend Tommy (Elgort) to take Carrie to the prom. Predictably, Margaret refuses Carrie permission. Frustrated with her life, Carrie's latent rage becomes malevolent and begins to manifest itself in truly terrifying ways. It all comes to a head on a prom night bloodbath.

While Carrie begins eerily enough, there is a turning point where the screenplay abandons psychological horror of the kind that Shutter or The Conjuring dish out, and goes for full-gear gore instead. It then becomes more graphic and visceral rather than creepy. Moretz is quite convincing in her role as Carrie and Moore's portrayal of Margaret is quite unsettling. Some of the film's best moments occur between Carrie and Margaret.

Although it cannot top Brian de Palma's 1976 movie, this retelling does allow more empathy for Carrie; she is not evil just for the heck of it. It's a case of the underdog suddenly becoming an overlord.
