Student Orientation and Advocacy Centre: Information Office
Location: Level 2, Otto Beit Building, Room 2.04
University Avenue, Upper Campus [Lift access from University Avenue]
Tel Enquiries: (021) 650 5082 E-mail: [email protected] The SOAC is a student friendly, walk-in, one-stop advice and referral centre for the UCT community and the public. It is also a centre from which the university-wide orientation activities for undergraduate students are developed, organised and coordinated. The SOAC deals with students’ needs and queries ranging from giving directions in the navigation of the campus (e.g. finding offices, buildings, people and venues) to advice and referral to services offered by the faculties, Department of Student Affairs and various other UCT departments. The SOAC is a good starting place for parents, prospective students, alumni and general visitors to UCT seeking information or simply wishing to visit the campus. It provides access to printed information (brochures, pamphlets, forms, notices, handbooks and other university publications) and assistance with using these. SOAC provides a comfortable and friendly space where students can talk to an Advisor about issues relating to university life. Students will be assisted and guided in processes relating to effective and manageable outcomes. We have an effective referral and follow-up system that ensures sufficient support and care to all students. We work closely with other service providers at UCT and where appropriate we would refer you to the relevant department. To expand continued support to first year students, SOAC provides mentoring training to student volunteers. The training covers aspects such as effective communication, listening skills, role of the mentor, confidentiality and referrals. All training programmes are designed to meet the specific needs of student groups. We look forward to meeting you. The SOAC Team

SRC ORIENTATION 2012
SRC Plaza Week 2012
Societies Submission
In February 2012 the SRC will run Plaza week over three days, February 6th, 7th and 8th during which all of UCT
Societies, Sports Clubs, Development Agencies and other student initiatives such as RAG and Varsity newspaper will
be awarded an opportunity to showcase their activities and recruit new members.
In addition to this the SRC will grant corporates an opportunity to rent a space on Plaza and sponsor the
entertainment provided between 12h00 and 14h00 when amplified sound is permissible. The revenue generated
through this programme goes into the SRC Academic bailout fund.
This event shall take place on Jammie Plaza which will be divided between societies, sports codes, development
agencies and other entities. Within the societies sector there will be further sub-divisions into society categories
which shall be used to determine their placement on Plaza.
The application process for all interested parties is already open. Forms are available for collection at the SRC
reception desk.
On all three days, participating UCT organisations and corporate sponsors will run stalls, marketing themselves to
students and staff members.
