The ComposerJeremy Woolstenhulme received his B.M.E. from Brigham Young University in
2000 and an M.A. in cello performance from the University of Nevada (Las Vegas) in 2005. Currently, Mr. Woolstenhulme serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has traveled with his orchestra to London, Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York. He is also a contract musician with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, cellist for the Seasons String Quartet, and a freelance musician performing at many venues located on the famed Las Vegas “Strip.” He is married to his beautiful wife Taryn, and they have two children, Cadence Belle and Coda Blake.
The CompositionMystical Quest is a musical depiction of a hero on an incredible journey. The heroic theme is first heard at the very
beginning of the piece in the violins. In measure 5, the rest of the orchestra joins in, and the driving rhythm in the basses is the force that launches the champion’s quest. Be sure that the bass pizzicato at m. 9 is strong and clear. As our hero starts out, many hardships are encountered, and this sense of struggle and conflict is found in mm. 35-58. The rising and falling of the E minor scale is a portrayal of our hero going up mountains and through valleys; the winding cello part depicts the many perils that are faced along the journey. In preparation for this section, I suggest practicing a one-octave E minor scale in the whole ensemble, starting with quarter notes and moving to eighth notes; basses can hold the tonic pitch to help with group intonation. At the Andante in m. 59, the cellos and violins play a sweet duet as our hero falls in love. Instruct the ensemble to dynamically shape the melodic phrases through this section. M. 72 should return to the original tempo. As the ending unfolds, the violins play our hero’s theme while great conflict rages in the viola and cello parts. Pay special attention to the important cello countermelody at m. 82 and the challenging viola part at m. 90. The battle finally resolves as the last slow chords are sounded and our hero emerges victorious.
Good luck and I hope you have fun with Mystical Quest!
