Welcome to the programme for Southampton’s first Festival of Words. Last summer, during the festival season, a couple of people asked ‘ Why don’t we have a literary festival Festival here?’ We brought together small group of enthusiastic conspirators to set about making one, and this is it, SO: To Speak.

When we announced it, one of the first comments was “It won’t compete with Hay-on-Wye Festival”. The reply is simple – why would we want to? This is Southampton. We have a city full of published, prize-winning and well-known writers, and literary experts; a vibrant and growing Spoken Word scene; flash fiction writers and internationally-known Haiku poets; well-known storytellers and promenade theatre groups.

From the beginning we wanted the Festival be focused on this city, and to support creativity. We are proud to be producing two new works – a set of poems about the Spitfire and a new writing of the Bevis legend – and to be running a programme for people of all levels who want to develop their writing. We are also proud to have Southampton Sight as our charity partner and hope you support them through the festival.

So, laced in parts with some music and song, this is Southampton’s Festival of Words. Charlie HislopFestival Director

With over 50 events taking place over 10 days , we are looking for people to get involved. SO: To Speak has been built so far out of the enthusiasm of a small group of committed people. Now we are looking for the people who can help us make it a great experience for the artists and audiences, and a great success for Southampton.

Whatever you can offer, we can use! We need people to promote it, run it, organise it, collect tickets, make it accessible, make it friendly, make things work, look after artists, picture it, record it, write about it, enjoy it! Festivals are great fun to be involved with, great teams to be part of, and give a great sense of achievement. And as well as our thanks, we can give you free places at some festival events.

To join the SO: To Speak Crew email [email protected], or fill in the form on the website www.sotospeakfestival.org/jointhecrew.

SO: To Speak Illustration Covers and illustrations are a fundamental lement of a book, and an art form in their own right. SO: To Speak has teamed up with Daff Workshops and Shogun Graphic Systems to create an illustration competition. With six titles to choose from, we are looking for illustrations that bring the book alive, with the winner taking a £50 prize.

The SO: To Speak Creative Programme

SO: To Speak offers opportunities to get involved and develop your word skills and link up with others – from beginner to working professional. We want to see the creative community in Southampton grow and develop well beyond the festival. With help from the Arts Council and Literature Works we have been able to keep the prices of workshops and classes to a minimum, and offer some for free.
