Summer 2017

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen!

O n the 19th June, Year 7s were fortunate enough to take a trip

into the past and took a visit to Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire.

Below is an account of the trip from Clarrie Williams in 7W.

“Though it was extremely hot, my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Kenilworth Castle. Not only because we got to see amazing things such

as Elizabeth I Chambers and her beautiful gardens. I think it’s fair to say we all imagined being princesses and queens whilst we were there. I learnt a lot and it helped me picture castle layout and defences more clearly (which will

come into use in my history exam). I would definitely like to go again”.

We’ve been looking back in history...

Y ear 7 recently completed projects in History where they

were asked to build models of Norman Motte and Bailey Castles. They handed in fantastic models and yummy cake versions of these castle types! These are without a doubt some of the best models ever completed for this project. A fantastic effort by Year 7 pupils and I was extremely pleased with the work they produced. Brilliant Year 7!

MATHEMATICAL CHALLENGE

D uring week beginning the 22nd of May the school held two very

successful Race for Life Events for year 7 and 8. The weather was glorious and students had to work hard to complete a 5k run to raise money for Cancer Research. Some very helpful Year 9s helped to set up and run the events, from getting the girls warmed up, to motivating them when things got tough, a big thank you to them (Aimee Dugmore, Nicola Collett, Shanais Johnson, Mia Lewis, Skye Ewers, Courtney Pollard, Poppy Briarty, Katie Cross, Bethany Wilcox and Isobel Davies) .

Students once again amazed us with their fundraising efforts by raising a total of £1776.67 across both events. Thank you to everyone who supported

them in collecting this sponsorship money. It makes us very proud to see our pupils come together in such a positive way against something which we know affects so many people in our school community and beyond. Every pupil who took part was a winner on the day but first to cross the line in Year 7 was Clarrie Wiliams and in Year 8 was Nicole Masamba, well done girls!

O ur fundraising for Cancer Research didn’t end there. A

total of 46 students and 8 staff signed up to take part in the

Birmingham Pretty Muddy 5k on the 15th of July in

Cofton Park. We have raised over £500 so far and still collecting and counting. If you would like to add to our fund raising you can still donate to our school team by visiting www.justgiving.com/TurvesGreen

Race for Life…

T uesday 13th June, the Year 10 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

group visited University College Birmingham for their annual Food Science Week. During the day the girls took part in 2 workshops, the first workshop was learning about the functions of fats in the diet, the role of emulsifiers in food and conducting a food experiment based on emulsification.

The second workshop was putting what they had learnt into practise, the first task was for the girls to make their own tartar sauce and they also learnt how to make a hollandaise sauce. Then the girls cooked some plaice which they had

covered in breadcrumbs and then used the tartar sauce they had made as a condiment to have with the fish. We were also given a tour of some of the amazing facilities in the College of Food including their sensory testing laboratory.

The girls really enjoyed the day and found it interesting and beneficial as they will soon be conducting some food science investigations as part of their GCSE controlled assessments.

M rs Purchase would like to thank the Peer Buddies that

have worked well supporting the Year 5 visits and coming along to the transition workshops where they helped to answer questions and worries about starting secondary school. They have been an incredible asset to our school and I am very proud of their hard work and

confidence in speaking to our new pupils. A huge thank you to them all: Tiffany Baker, Poppy Briarty, Regina Cervantes Bravo, Nicola Collett, Katie Cross, Danni Deadman, Aimee Dugmore, Skye Ewers, Rianne Hayes, Yamkela Keva, Isabella Pickering and Bethany Wilcox.

A Big Thank you to...

O n Monday 15th May, Turves Green Girls’ School held a dance festival

which was organised by Mrs Simcox and Miss Adey with the theme of Girl Power. The festival showcased work by our own students in Year 7, 8, 10 and 11 and Year 5 girls from some of our feeder primary schools also performed. Mrs Simcox has worked hard over the past term with the Year 7 girls after school choreographing pieces for them as well as helping the girls with their own choreography. She has also worked hard with both Year 10 and 11 BTEC dance girls so that their pieces were ready to go in the show. The primary schools that were involved were West Heath Primary and Cofton Primary who Miss Adey went out to

work with during after school sessions for 3 consecutive weeks. The girls worked really hard and Miss Adey has since received an email off Kirandeep

Flora, the Year 5 teacher at West Heath Primary who has thanked her and said that the girls had a lovely evening. Turves Green Primary School were also involved with two of our Year 10 girls, Amy Tiller and Sophie Bullock going to them after school to work with the girls there. Many parents from the primary schools and from our school along with girls from Turves Green Girls’ came along to watch. Each girl that participated received a certificate and the primary girl’s certificate also included information regarding our open evening and morning in September on the back. The show had a great atmosphere and was a great success, there was lots of positive comments from the audience after the show, all girls involved clearly worked very hard and enjoyed themselves.

Dance Festival

A ll Year 10 went to Halesowen College on 5th July to get an idea

of what post 16 education is like.

There were a variety of options, from Hair & Beauty and Animal Care to Psychology and Archaeology. Something for everyone.

Pupils had a tour of whatever site they were at and had a chance to ask students any questions. Some pupils thought it was a brilliant experience, whereas a few decided Halesowen was too big and scary for them. One pupil commented that they have just got to be the oldest in the school and now they feel like the babies again!

Pupils now need to spend the summer thinking about their options for Year 12. We will start applications for post 16 in October. They need to have their UCAS Progress information completed and have done some research about their chosen pathway in Year 12.

A Taste of the future

F ifty-nine Year 10 and Year 11 pupils accompanied by Mr Keylock, Ms

Hall, Mr Jackson, Miss Charles and Miss Hanratty left Turves Green at 4am on Thursday 7th July for a History trip to

Amsterdam and Berlin.

Our first stop was to Anne Frank’s House. We found the whole experience extremely moving and were amazed at how so many people were hidden for so long.

Anne, a 13 year old Jewish girl had to go into hiding during World War Two to escape the Nazis. With seven others she hid in the secret annex in Amsterdam from July 1942 until their discovery in 1944. All that time, they were unable to go outside and had to share the darkness and dampness of the hiding place, continually fearful of being discovered. From then until the family's arrest Anne kept a diary she had received as a birthday present, and wrote in it regularly.

On 4th August 1944 they were discovered and sent to the transit

camp Westerbork, from where they were deported to Auschwitz. We picked up Anne’s story here at Westerbork the next day where our guide showed us around and explained the story of the Franks and the other 102,000 Dutch Jews deported from here to their deaths at the death camps.

Every person is commemorated at Westerbork. Each individual stone represents a single person that had stayed at Westerbork and died in the Nazi Concentration Camps. In November 1944, Anne and her sister were transferred to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp from Auschwitz, where they died a few months later. Anne’s father, Otto, was the sole family survivor. He returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that her diary had been saved by one of their helpers and it was published in 1947.

Amsterdam was a great place to visit. We also managed to visit The Royal Palace and to fit in time for shopping and waffle eating. Miss Hanratty bought 6 pairs of clogs!

It was then onto Berlin and some torrential downpours, thankfully Ms Hall had purchased a rather stylish orange plastic rain poncho in Amsterdam after seeing the weather forecast, hopefully, no photos of this exist.

We visited Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp north of Berlin which became a training centre for SS officers who would often be sent to oversee other camps afterwards. We walked through the camp gates with the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” (work will make you free) sign, saw the execution

trench and the remains of the gas chamber and cremation ovens for ourselves. This was a really sobering experience for us all.

We enjoyed a walking tour of Berlin with some local guides taking in major sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall, not to mention a cuddle with Buddy Bear before climbing the glass dome of the Reichstag.

Our final day saw all of us tackle public transport – it was not easy getting all 64 of us all on the same underground train! We managed it though and our final visit of the trip was to the Holocaust Memorial Monument in the centre of Berlin before free time and shopping.

The journey was a long one, but all agree that the effort was worth it. We had a wonderful time and made some lasting memories. Thanks go to Mr Keylock for all of his amazing

hard work in organising it. Where to next Sir?

PRIMARY PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITSSCHOOL VISITS

A group of Year 7s were chosen by their teacher

for all their hard work this year and they got the chance on Friday 30th June to meet some wild and exotic creatures with the animal man presenter as part of their study of Ecosystems.

20 girls gathered in Room 8 for an hour of animal magic, they met allsorts from

Kelloggs the Corn snake to Esther the baby owl! Girls were allowed to

handle some of

the animals themselves, George the bearded dragon was a favourite along with the honey bear whose name none of us can remember but she was VERY cute and cuddly and smelt of chocolate (honestly!). Well Done to all the Year 7s involved it was a well deserved treat! Keep up the good work in lessons.

Mrs Howes - Head of Geography

GOOD WORK...

T his year, we have welcomed 16 local primary schools to Turves

Green Girls’ School to come and join us for a variety of activities and have also gone out and visited 12 of these. Girls from the Year 5 classes from these schools came in and took part in various activities including Medieval and Rainforest Animal workshops, PE activities, Technology, Cookery, Art, Science and ICT. It was a great opportunity for these primary school children to experience life at Turves Green and it was a pleasure to have them visit our school!

W e welcomed our new Year 7 intake for Induction Day on

Wednesday 5th July. It was lovely to meet the new Year 7s, they were immaculately behaved and I look forward to being their Year Head in September! The girls seemed to enjoy the day too with Paige Stephens from Albert Bradbeer Primary Academy saying:

Mrs Reeves - Head of Year 7

I was worrying about not knowing anyone and about

the difficulty of lessons. I liked all the lessons because they were really fun and the teachers were really friendly. I just like to say I love this school and can’t wait to come here in September.

T he Next Generation Awards: All of Year 7 have taken part in these

awards for the first time this year.

Pupils worked in a group to create a presentation, they had to choose an issue they cared about and then come up with a project idea that would make a difference to this issue. Pupils came up with a range of fantastic ideas such as Depression, Gender Neutral Toilets, Homelessness, Bullying, Safety, Animal Food bank and Obesity. The external assessors chose a winning group, The Healthy Hunters, who presented an idea to run a healthy eating and exercise after school club. They were praised for their idea and fantastic presentation skills by the assessors and went on to represent Turves Green

Girls’ School at the Semi Finals held at Newman University. Miss Adey and Mrs Vizor worked with them to ensure that their presentation wowed the judges on the day! The girls once again triumphed in the semi finals and have gone through to the finals which will be held at The Royal Bank of Scotland in Brindley Place on 5th October 2017. We are so proud of our girls’ and wish them all the luck for the finals.

The winning group were:

Ella Massingham, Ruby Monahan, Tyra Roberts, Izzabell Roberts, Michaela Jones and Maisie Lewis.

The Next Generation Awards:

T he Year 11 Prom for Turves Green Girls' and the Boys' School took

place on Friday the 30th June at Birmingham University. The venue looked beautiful decorated in silver and gold balloons and pretty fairy lights which soon ended up decorating the Year 11's prom outfits!

Holly and Jenna, the official photographers from 'Jolly Media' were downstairs and many pupils went to have their photographs taken.

Pupils started arriving at about twenty past six in various vehicles including a vintage car and a long pink hummer! Miss Newton and Mrs Tipping from the office were waiting to take photos of them on their arrival and throughout the night - many thanks to them both for their hard work and continual snapping away! As you can see from the photos, they did a fabulous job!

Many proud parents came to drop them off and it was great to have a little chat to them before the rain began and we all

had to run into the venue - many of the pupils had to go very slowly on their gigantic heels but they

were laughing all the way!

It was an especially poignant Prom for Mrs Smith who works in the office as her son was leaving school and he was at the Prom too! There is a picture of her standing proudly next to her son. This was also Mr Crookes' last

Turves Green Prom and he had a great night and joined in with the 'Single Ladies' dance which I sadly missed. However, I have since seen the video. Great moves Mr Crookes!

Both boys and girls looked amazing and I was so proud and quite emotional to

see them looking so

beautiful and grown up. It seems like only yesterday that they were coming to me complaining of tiny little cuts on their fingers and fall outs with friends! I cannot believe how quickly they became Year 11 Leavers!

Pupils and staff from both the Boys' and Girls' School hit the dance floor and danced the night away. The dance floor was full all night, except for when there was a break to eat some lovely food and some beautiful cakes. I enjoyed watching everyone dancing away and having fun - especially Mr Yentumi's and Miss Adey's energetic dancing. They must have been exhausted when they got home!

I was then forced to do the 'Dirty Dancing' dance by Mr Smedley and I do mean forced! I tried everything to get out of it - running off, disappearing etc but to no avail. I had to try to jump and was then held in the air and rotated by Mr Smedley, Miss Adey and Mrs Simcox to the sound of massive screams and cheers from pupils and staff. I am not sure how they managed to hold me up - bet they had sore arms the next day! A terrifying experience and one I will never forget but it was wonderful to receive a massive cheer at the end and a big thanks from everyone. The Boys' School have since sent me a glitter mirror to thank me for organising the prom which has a graphic commemorating my dancing 'experience' on it. Many thanks to them for doing this.

Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and there was many tired feet at the end of the night! Many thanks to all staff who attended, the fabulous finance ladies for all their hard work, the wonderful ladies in the office for all their support and to Miss Newton who went above and beyond to help me.

Mrs McAuley (Head of Year 11)

FUND RAISING FOR ANNALISE

E arlier on in the year the whole of Year 8 were off timetable in order to

take part in Expressive Arts Day. Pupils worked in the arts discipline of their choice for an immersive day of learning in the arts, working with arts professionals and experiencing learning and activities beyond those that they would normally experience in regular lessons. In Art pupils learnt about the tradition of Mehndi body art using traditional henna, and applied their own designs to their hands. In Dance pupils worked with a professional choreographer to develop two modern dance routines.

In Music and Drama pupils worked on Musical Theatre to the theme of Grease the Musical.

Express yourself Year 8!!!

A nnalise Goodwin

Year 9 was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Friedrich Ataxia with Hypertrophic Cardiomyphy but also developed Scoliosis which she is recovering from having had surgery.

On Monday, 10 July, staff and pupils had a cake sale to raise money to buy specialist cutlery for Annalise. We exceeded our fundraising total to £170.00 which is fantastic news. Well done to all those involved!

Annalise and her family would like to say a big thank you for all the help and support and hope you all had a fun day.

4 5 Year 8 pupils went to the Black Country Museum on Monday, 17th

July. We had great weather and everyone had a good time in the Mine and in the shops and houses. Some brave individuals braved the carousel.

Year 8 pupil, Chloe Fieldhouse (8B) shared her experience;

When we visited the Black Country Museum on Monday, 17th July, we had an amazing time because we experienced what it used to be like when there was no technology and there were loads of different ways to live. I really liked the fair and the ride was faster than I’d thought. The sweet shop was also really good and I brought a cherry lollipop.

M r Yentumi, Teacher of

English and Drama has been selected for the next

season of ITV Ninja Warrior, he has been selected after going through many tough auditions. Mr Yentumi said “I am

absolutely over the moon to have secured a place on the hit show ‘Ninja Warrior’ on ITV. It’s going to be tough, but I will give it a good go, fingers crossed!”

We wish Mr Yentumi all the best and will keep you up-dated on his progress.

L ucy Buckley 8W entered the County Junior Girls’ Golf Championships

which were held at the Vale Golf Club. Lucy won this competition and was presented with the silver salver which she holds onto for a year.

Ping Women's Fourball Betterball Grand Final Lucy and Carol (Lady Captain of Bromsgrove Golf Club) qualified for this final by winning their club qualifier. The Top 50 pairs qualified for the grand

final out of all the clubs who entered in England so both Lucy and her partner became one of the top 50 pairs which was an achievement in itself. Having qualified for the grand final Lucy had to go down to Gainsborough where she was to play the Karsten Lakes Championships Course. On arrival they were both presented with their prizes for getting to the grand final which were an event named golf bag, the latest pair of ecco golf shoes, a Ping sleeveless golf top plus a mounted photograph of Lucy and her partner. Overall Lucy and Carol finished 32nd with 34 points (there were a few on the same points and also quite a few on 35/36).

This was still pretty good to finish 32nd and be classed as the 32nd top golf pair out of the 50 who qualified. There was an initial entry into the Ping Women's Fourball Betterball competition of over 16,500 players from a record 890 clubs all of which held qualifying rounds in the competition.

15 Year 7 girls enjoyed a day to remember when they visited the

County Cricket Ground in Bristol to watch the Women’s World Cup match between England and South Africa. On a gorgeous hot day there was so much to see and do at the ground, including a craft fair, competitions to enter and the small matter of a great game of cricket to watch. England batted first which is what we all hoped for as we were royally treated to some amazing stroke play and

innovative shots from Tammy Beaumont and Sarah Taylor. Taylor barely had time to take breath after completing her 147 (including an amazing six) when she was signing autographs for all the girls from Turves Green. Jessica Groves 7W said “It was brilliant; she was so kind to us in the middle of her match and was smiling!” She then had to put on gloves to be the wicket keeper for the 2nd innings of the match. England won the match too! A friendly steward at the ground (from Hall Green of all

places) commented on how well turned out and well behaved the girls were “The

girls were brilliant and so was the match” said Mrs Turner!

BRISTOL TRIP IS SIX OF THE BEST FOR YEAR SEVEN

I would like to thank the 2 students above, for all the help they have given me over the last school year. They have helped coach lower school Netball players and both the Indoor Athletics and Outdoor Athletics teams. They have been to practices and competitions and I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort they have given. Your help has been very much appreciated.

Mrs Turner

W e have had a very successful year with Family Learning at Turves

Green Girls’ School. Four parents passed their Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1 with flying colours. They are now moving on to study their Functional Skills Mathematics Level 2 in September, with a further 5 new Year 7 parents joining us

also in the new academic year.

All of the present 6 parents/carers have enjoyed the course and have commented on how it has improved their maths skills and how pleasurable it is working alongside their daughters. In addition, the girls have grown in confidence working with parents/carers.

If you would like to join us, even if you

do not want to study for further qualifications, please contact Mr Humphreys for further details.

Finally, we would like to thank all the parents who have attended this year and that you all have a wonderful 6 weeks holidays.

W hen the Enterprise

Sailing Trust offered our Year 7 pupils the chance to learn to sail earlier this year, we jumped at the

chance. Six of our most intrepid students took part in a two day course during the Easter break at Bartley Green Reservoir.

Despite none of them having sailed before, after a lot of fun, some serious bravery and quite a few splashes, they all achieved their Level 1 Sailing

Certificate by the end of the course. Congratulations to Amy Brister, Ami Hare, Shinae Byron, Charlotte Whitehouse, Abbie-Mae Pemberton and Mia Turner. This fantastic opportunity was made possible by the Enterprise Sailing Trust, which works to increase the diversity and inclusivity of sailing
