“MARY MOTHER OF GOD”

The chiming of the Angelus bell is a long and holy tradition in the life of the Church. At six in the morning, twelve noon and six in the evening, across the world church and monastery bells ring out the ancient chime, and people pause in the midst of their daily activities to murmur the ancient prayer: “The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary…” Christian people stop to recall the greatest event in the history of time, that God became man in Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary.

In the ancient, Christian land of Ireland, this tradition was taken up in the age of modern communications by radio, and then by television. For many years now, and still to this day, at midday and in the evening, the media pauses its programs to transmit the Angelus chimes across the fields of Ireland, and in many a home, people stop their busy lives and join in the silent prayer.

In very recent times, in this age of secularism, pluralism and the Celtic tiger economy, voices have been raised to suggest alteration or even abolition of this Christian practice. So far those voices have not been a majority, and the “prayer pause; has survived. Some good alterations have been introduced, however, in the television transmission. Where, at one time, the screen revealed an icon of the Mother and Child to view during the chimes, in recent times a series of overlapping images have been introduced, showing tranquil scenes of Irish life, of lake and land, farm and field, terrace and town: and the faces of Irish people, young and old, looking up from their work, looking inward and upward.

This holy moment is truly sacred and truly precious. It takes us to another level of life, to stillness and a wonder at it all. It is a moment not only for saying the prayer, but even for not saying the prayer. It is a moment to remember the faces of loved ones, alive or gone before us, near or far away. It is a time to call those faces before our mind and to pray for all those lovely people. It is a time, most of all, to place ourselves before the face of God, and to ask him to reveal his face to us, to let his face shine on us.

At the beginning of Israel’s story, in the Book of Numbers, such a wish and such a prayer is made into a blessing for the people. As the people in the desert are formed into a nation under God, and prepare to enter the Promised Land, the priests are instructed on how to call the blessing of God down upon the people. It is the blessing of God’s face. The face is our entry point to the world, and also the world’s entry point into our inner being. All healthy meetings are meetings face to face. All healthy attitudes involve a mutual seeing, not a staring at others nor a sneaking glimpse. All honest encounters are an encounter of faces. The spirit of the person, the soul,

is communicated through the open face. It is through the face that we communicate warmth and affection to others, or withhold them as the case may be. The human smile is the warmest expression of our genuine delight in others, and its warmth and brightness can be felt by the recipient. That is why we plead with God to smile upon us. It is the greatest blessing on earth.

In Jesus, born of Mary, God’s ancient promise and blessing is fulfilled. God has revealed his face to us in Mary’s child, born at the appointed time. Mary pondered these great mysteries in her heart. What great things the Lord had done in her life, and what privileges she had been given, to be called ‘Mother of God’. All generations now have called her blessed, and so we on this day, at the opening of the year.

Mary is Mother of God. And we are children of God. We should never forget it. Not ever. Let the Angelus bell continue to chime and to ring out the joyous news. Happy New year, everyone! Yes, and more. The blessing of God be upon you – the blessing that comes to us in his son, born of Mary, and whose name is Jesus.

GIVING TREE

On behalf of the Social Concerns Ministry, we wish all of you a Blessed and Peace-filled New Year! 2020 was a year like no other. It pushed and tested all of us. It gave us many opportunities to give hope to many of the people who are struggling in our midst, by providing food, shelter, transportation, and other basic necessities for their families. The generosity of our parishioners, neighbors and friends, abounds, which we witnessed, especially during this Holiday Season.

In 2020: 3,756 households were served through the food pantry.

Overall, this is an increase of 63% from 2019. In our busiest months we saw an increase of 126%!

1,019 individuals received presents through the Giving Tree program

Thousands of rides given through ICP Over 20 Career Network speakers/workshops Hundreds of volunteers Almost 1,000 handmade Mission Ladies items 60+ families received financial assistance through St.

Vincent DePaul or Social Concerns with heat, rent, electric, fuel, etc.

Dozens of families assisted through Domestic Violence Outreach and the Respect Life Ministry

Volunteers from all areas of this ministry – Social Concerns Commission, Society of St. Vincent de Paul , Interfaith Community Partners, Food Pantry, Interfaith Career Network, Respect Life, Mission Ladies, Lenten Almsgiving, Advent Giving Tree, Domestic Violence Outreach, and other special efforts-join you in our goal of responding to human needs with justice and love, in Christ’s name.

On a personal note, I have been so inspired by our community this year. YOU HAVE FUELED US! There were weeks we truly did not know how we would have enough food to meet the increased need, and just like that, more food and donations would appear. We have seen the most creative food drives and fundraisers this year, all focused on helping while keeping people safe. New and returning donors have made it possible for us to purchase more food as needed and directly assist more families with rent and utility assistance. Almost every day, I get a call from someone asking how they can help. Thank you!

Our volunteers…I cannot say enough about our volunteers. Many of you we miss being together with, but know that it is the safe and best option right now. Each week all our volunteer slots fill. Week after week after week. It is just incredible. Our volunteers have adapted as we learned more about this virus, as our procedures had to change, and as our numbers increased. Thank you!

In the New Year, we ask you to pray along with us: Lord God, grant us a vision of your world as your love would have it:

a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; a world where the riches of creation are shared, and everyone can enjoy them; a world where different races and cultures live in harmony and mutual respect; a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love.

Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As we approach Christmas and the celebration of Christ's birth, after months of isolation, uncertainly, sickness, and the death of too many due the COVID-19, we have cause for optimism for 2021.

The Vaccines are being rolled out! Thank you scientists and big Pharma - who don't always get the praise they deserve.

The first to receive them will be our first line health care workers and first responders who have worked under the most stressful conditions since February - We thank them and appreciate them - be sure to do so as you meet them.

We mourn those who have passed from this disease and for their heart broken families who could not even accompany them in their last days.

We are greatly saddened by the closure of places of worship, businesses, restaurants, hotels, bars, theaters, etc., and the loss of jobs, revenue and life's work and pray that as the world and country reopens - many will be able to recover, we will need to support our churches (especially St. Cletus ) and small businesses more than ever.

It's been an awful year but here we are ready to celebrate The Nativity of Our Lord, who promised to never desert us, He hasn't and will not as start to get back to some kind of normalcy.

Keep the Faith, Trust in Jesus Christ, Wear a mask, Take the vaccine, A New Year awaits with great promise!

St. Cletus and St. John of the Cross Parishes will be hosting a Confirmation prep program for any adult Catholic who has received First Holy Communion, but not the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is open to all parishioners at St. Cletus, St. Francis Xavier, and St. John of the Cross Parishes.

THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York houses a beautiful triptych of the Holy Family called the “Mérode Altarpiece,” painted by Robert Campin. The left of the three-paneled piece of art captures an open door of two bystanders peering into the main panel of the Annunciation, while the far-right panel depicts St. Joseph in his carpentry shop. This artistic masterpiece examines the life of the Holy Family and the extraordinary events surrounding their life and calling from God. Catching a glimpse of that home in Nazareth, where Jesus grew up and acquired his wisdom, we see how Jesus, Mary and Joseph are role models to us today in our own families.

In that home at Nazareth we meet a couple who show openness to allowing God to lead their life together. Mary heard God’s invitation, and she gives her fiat — that is, her “yes” to God. St. Joseph opens his heart to the angel sent by God in his dreams, and takes Mary as his wife. This was not the first or last time that St. Joseph followed God’s lead in his life as he protected the Holy Family. After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, Joseph followed the prompting of an angel to flee into Egypt for safety and wait there until another angelic message leads them back home. The Holy Family is a great example for families everywhere to always be open to whatever God’s will might be and to always be listening for God to speak. He might speak his will in prayer or through another person. Just like the Holy Family, our faith is passed down and taught to us by our parents. Parents are the first and most important teacher of the faith to children, and they model virtues to them. The Holy Family taught Jesus how to read, and how to pray. Years later Jesus would teach his disciples how to pray with the Lord’s Prayer. Joseph would have handed on his carpentry trade to his son, who later would die on the wood of a cross. Jesus had a great concern for the poor and the marginalized. In the home of Nazareth he learned generosity and kindness. Jesus had

the most excellent parents; Mary was without sin and Joseph is described as a just and prudent man. Parents today can learn from Joseph and Mary on how to teach their children.

Family life has been especially challenging this year during the pandemic. Perhaps now is the time for us to knock on the door of the Holy Family’s home in Nazareth and move from being an onlooker peering in (in the first panel) to a guest in their home. Jesus will gladly welcome us in! May the Holy Family guide us to be more loving, kind, and generous within our own families.

RE FAMILY MODELS KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY

One great example of teaching faith values can be found within the Lynch Family. They started a family tradition at Christmastime. As they purchased gifts for family members, they would also purchase gifts for those in need and donate them. This year, they donated those gifts to the Giving Tree. We are very grateful for their kindness and generosity, and for modeling these virtues within their family and to our community.

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY

The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. FEAST OF FAITH

Processions - Why does the liturgy begin with a procession? It is not just a practical matter of getting the ministers of the liturgy from the sacristy to the sanctuary. The procession is a powerful sign of who we are as Christian people. We are not static, staying in one place. We are going somewhere. Our procession leads us to the altar, sign of Christ’s presence in our midst. We move, we process, because we recognize our need for what Christ is preparing for us at that table. We go forward eagerly, because we are hungry for that heavenly food.

This procession is an orderly one: servers, deacon, priest presider. Each is set apart by distinctive vesture: albs for the altar servers, dalmatic for the deacon, chasuble for the priest. The procession is an image of the hierarchical structure of the Church. On a deeper level it is an image of unity in diversity. We are all on a journey to the heavenly city, but each of us is clothed with different gifts. We all receive the call to service, but not in the same way. COMPASSIONATE CARE MINISTRY

The Compassionate Care Ministry is again badly in need of postage stamps for its notes of sympathy and support during the first year following the loss of a loved one. Each bereaved family receives six cards during that year. This means that if there are ten funerals during a period of one month, 50 stamps are needed in that month alone. Your generous donations have meant so much in the past and we are very grateful.

If you are able to contribute to this worthwhile ministry in this way, it will be very much appreciated. Simply place them in an envelope marked CCM and put them through the slot in the rectory door—or drop them in one of the collection baskets located at each exit in the church building.
