Elizabeth Snead, widow of Nickerson Snead: Chancery Causes, Box 57, WCV Courthouse, Abingdon, VA

Below are four transcribed documents from the Chancery Causes Files pertaining to the disposition of the estate of Dr. Nickerson SNEAD, s/o Benjamin SNEAD & Felicia OLIVER.

p. 1: To the Honorable John A. KELLY Judge of the Circuit Court of Washington County Virginia.

The bill of Complaint of M. M. MORRIS Administrator & c. will respectfully shew that one Nickerson SNEAD(,) a citizen of Washington County VA(,) departed this life on the (not stated) day of (not stated) testate, that his last will and testament was fully admitted to probate in the County Court of said County on the 6th April 1869, and the Executors named in said Will having declined to quality as such* (written in margin: *R. H. LYNCH was appointed admintr. With the will annexed of said N. SNEAD, was qualified and acted as Such, and as your orator is informed turned over the personal assets amounting by appraisement to some $750.00 (amount?) to the Widow – the said LYNCH died and his widow(,) Sally K. LYNCH qualified as admtrix. After his death(,) to wit(,) Aug 28/71, your Orator was by this order of said Court appointed Administrator de bonis non with the will annexed of said SNEAD, gave the required bond and is now discharging the duties of the office. See copy of said Will herewith filed marked “W” and prayed to be considered part of this bill A copy of the bond and order appointing your orator administrator will be filed, if required.

Your Orator would further shew unto your Honor that the testator by the terms of his will directed the debts of the estate first to be paid out of the

p. 2: personal assets – and after certain divises and bequests gave the remainder of the personal estate absolutely to his wife and the remainder of his lands to her during her natural life, At her death the Executors were to Expose to public sale said lands upon such terms as they might deem best and distribute the proceeds Equally between testators “living brothers and sisters and the heirs of those deceased”.

Mrs. SNEAD(,) the widow(,) died on the (not stated) day of June 1876 and your Orator in pursuance of the requirements of the will sold the lands of the decedent to one Wm. B. MASON upon a credit of one and two years at the price of $6500.00 and took from the said purchase bond with good security, this final (??? In attachment?) is now due and will be paid in a short and the second payment will be paid, as your Orator thinks, at maturity or very soon thereafter.

Your Orator* (Note in margin: *has been Endeavoring to get into available Shape for distribution the (???) assets that came into his hands from the former Admtr. LYNCH who made no settlement during his life as your orator is informed, but understands that his administratrix has made a settlement since his death. Your Orator -) has made several settlements of his Administration account copies of which will be filed if desired by any of the parties in interest and has a number of Vouchers now

p. 3: in his hands preparatory to making a further settlement; Notwithstanding the payments, claims are constantly being presented, of which your orator had previously no information*. (Note in margin: * Your orator does not Know how far the liabilities were discharged by LYNCH former admr. nor can he ascertain who the distributees all are or where they reside, some of them claim more than others say is due and the liabilities yet unpaid will consume a portion of the proceeds of sale of the lands.).

Owing to the large number of heirs residing in the various states (whose names will be presently given so far as they have been nor can be well ascertained, and the constant presentation of debts your orator desires the aid of a Court of Equity in concurring the creditors, heirs and distributees and making such settlement of the liabilities and distribution to the parties entitled as will insure them justice and your orator(‘s) protection.

EXPANSIONS/CORRECTIONS ON FAMILY OF MICAJAH SNEAD & SARAH BOLLING AND SON, BENJAMIN SNEAD & FELICIA

OLIVER (from 1994 publication)

Micajah SNEAD, b. c1740; d. c1779, Halifax Co. VA married about 1760-5, Sarah, who was quite likely, Sarah BOLLING. Records of Sarah have not been found in Halifax Co. VA after 1797. But, clearly from property records the land sold by Benjamin and his mother and siblings about 1797 is at least part of the land which Micajah SNEAD originally had on Rocky Branch, Halifax Co. VA. I speculate further that this land might well have originally been in the hands of the BOLLING family (or at least some of it). In addition to the BOLLING information included in Ancestors and Descendants of Benjamin Snead and Felicia Oliver (1994), coupled with the fact that Micajah and Sarah named a child Bolling Snead, the following are noteworthy: (1) Halifax Co. VA Court

7

Page 8: SNEAD FAMILY (HALIFAX, RUSSELL, WASHINGTON COSvarussel/families/Snead_Supplement_May_…  · Web view(Note the word, living brothers and sisters.) l. Henry SNEAD who died before

Orders (Plea Book 6) 1767-1770 (TCL Gen., p. 298): September Court 1769: Josiah FARLEY is appointed surveyor of the Road from Evans’ Creek to John BOLLINGs… ordered that he, with his own male laboring tithables, and Edward TERRY, Henry Baker KERBY, Henry KERBY, William MULHOLLAND, John SNEAD, John BOLLING, James BLACKWELL, and William COTRELL, do forthwith clear and keep the said Road in repair. (2) IBID, p. 73, March Court 1768: Thomas ROBINSON, Plaintiff, against Micajah SNEAD and William BOLLING, Defendants, on a petition… Defendants not appearing… Plaintiff (to) recover against the Defendants his debt aforesaid, and his costs… with interest form October 20, 1765. (3) Halifax Orders 1770-1771 (TCL Gen., p. 6), August court, 1770: (p. 6 of orig.): A deed from Benjamin BOLLING to Micajah SNEAD was proved by the oaths of two of the witnesses, which is ordered to be recorded. (4) IBID., p. 16-A shows the plat of Benjamin BOLLING, 20 May 1762, 294 acres on Rockey Branch H3-325; listed adjacent to this land is the plat supposedly belonging to John BOLLING, “may belong here: John BOLLING, 24 Oct 1769, 230 acres adj. FOSTER, SNEED, ROBINSON, et al. HB-36DD”; also nearby is the land of Jacob DYE, 20 May 1762, 1040 acres on Rockey Br. H3-332. (5) Halifax Co. VA Orders 1771-1773 (TCL Gen., p. 94): July Court, 1772: John BOLLING and Ann, his wife, Plaintiffs, vs. John CHAPMAN, executor of Nathan CHAPMAN, Defendant, in Case. p. 413: The Plaintiffs not residing in this Colony, the Defendant, by his attorney, moved for Security for costs… and thereupon Micajah SNEED came into Court and undertakes that if the Plaintiffs should be case in this suit that they shall pay the Defendant’s costs or that he, the said Micajah SNEAD, will pay it for them. (Note the association of William SNEAD, b. c1790, in Russell Co. VA with the DYE family and the fact that one of the children of Benjamin SNEAD & Felicia OLIVER married a CHAPMAN (Edmond)

Note: I am unsure at this point if the Benjamin BOLLING, mentioned above, is the one in the 1770’s records of Anson Co. NC.

In 1822 in Russell Co. VA (RCV), the court ordered aid to “poor old Mrs. SNEAD”. It is possible that this might have been Sarah (BOLLING) SNEAD. If so, she moved from Halifax with Benjamin or William SNEAD about 1803 or 1804. (See RCV Law Order Book 6:450: 1822). Otherwise, for that timeframe, one would have to suspect a wife of either Bolling or Micajah SNEAD, both of whom were in RCV in early years.

Benjamin SNEAD, b. c1765-8, Halifax Co. VA; d. in Russell Co. VA (RCV) c1833 (PPTL info); married in Halifax Co. VA, 27 Dec 1790, Felicia OLIVER, b. c1770, prob. Caroline Co. VA; d. after 1850, probably in Washington Co. VA.

In the house of Benjamin SNEAD and Felicia OLIVER in 1820c, RCV, there are 6 white males and 5 white females (5 male children and 4 female children), however, counting Nickerson SNEAD, Chancery Causes information presented above indicate 10 children of Benjamin & Felicia. Henry SNEAD and Oliver SNEAD were married prior to 1820 and therefore likely would not included in the 10 children in the HH of Benjamin & Felicia in 1820, for a possible total of 12 children. By 1830 only 2 children appear to be at home. The PPTL for RCV for 1824 lists a “Benjamin SNEAD Jr.” whom I previously thought might be a s/o Benjamin & Felicia; however, no such child is listed in

8

Page 9: SNEAD FAMILY (HALIFAX, RUSSELL, WASHINGTON COSvarussel/families/Snead_Supplement_May_…  · Web view(Note the word, living brothers and sisters.) l. Henry SNEAD who died before

the Chancery Causes unless he was then a dead brother of Nickerson, without heirs. Likewise, the c1788 birth of Bolling SNEAD, previously speculated to be a child of Benjamin and Felicia and lack of mention of him in chancery further casts doubts on this speculation and, finally, although the timeframe of birth might possibly fit, there is no mention in chancery of William SNEAD (see 1850c, RCV) which could also be due to his dying childless long before Nickerson SNEAD.

Regarding Washington Co. VA (WCV) Census of 1850, HH510, assumed child of Boling/Bolling & Ann: SNEAD, Samuel, 28; Nancy, 24; William, 4; John, 2; Mary, 1/12, this family is found in 1880c, Louisa Dist., Lawrence Co. KY, p. 426c: SNEAD, Samuel, 58, stone mason, VA/VA/VA; Nancy, 55, VA/VA/VA; Samuel, 21; Maggie, 18, KY; Carrie, 16, KY. There son William is nearby: 1880c, Louisa, Lawrence co. KY: SNEAD, Wm., 35, VA/VA/VA; Martha, 29, KY/KY/KY; Jane, 14; Mary B., 10; Flora, 8 (p. 431A). To date son of Boling & Ann, Berry/Berryman H./Berry Hill, etc. SNEAD (1850c, WCV), has not been located.

From the above and other sources, an update on the children of Benjamin SNEAD and Felicia OLIVER of Halifax Co. and Russell Co. VA:

1. Henry SNEAD , b. c1792, Halifax Co. VA; d. 15 Sep 1864; bur. Old Glade Cem., WCV; m. prob. in Washington Co. VA (WCV) c1816, Jane KESTNER, b. c1796; d. after 1830, d/o Phillip KESTNER & Elizabeth MERCHANT; ch. named in Chancery above (7 children):

1.a. Nicholas SNEAD, b. c1816 (1850c, WCV), called Nicholson in 1850c, WCV and living in 1840c in Sullivan Co. TN; died in IL according to chancery papers of 1877-8, “heirs unknown”.

1850c, WCV, HH1540: SNEAD, Nicholdson, 34; Malvina, 39; Henry, 10; Mary A., 7; Elizabeth, 1. They are listed between the families of Sylvester & Frances L. SHEPHERD & Christian & Mary KINSER.

Not located in 1860c of IL; children listed in 1850c, WCV are: Henry SNEAD (c1839), Mary A. SNEAD (c1842) and Elizabeth SNEAD (c1848). In the 1885 May final court settlement, Henry M. SNEAD & Mrs. L. M. ANDERSON are mentioned; perhaps this is the Henry SNEAD, b. 1839, s/o Nicholas and one of Nicholas’s daughters; each child received 1/5 of 1/9th or 1/90th of Nickerson SNEAD’s estate. To back up this contention: 1880c, Burnsville, Bartholomew Co. IN, p. 207B: SNEED, Henry M., 41, VA/VA/VA; Rachel, 39, NC/NC/NC; Henry M. C., 15; Benj. T., 10; Wm. G., 2 plus 3 of the WATSON family. Hence, I would advise to investigate further IN as well as IL for the descendants of Nicholas/Nicholson SNEAD.

1.b. Mary SNEAD, b. c1818; living 1880-5 in Lee Co. VA; m. c1840, Joel J. BAYS, b. 1816, s/o John BAYS & Catherine WEBB. The 1850c, RCV lists 4 children: Catherine Jane BAYS, b. c1841; John H. BAYS, b. c1843; Julia Ann BAYS, b. c1845 & Elizabeth F. (F. in 1850c, RCV, published; A. from another source) BAYS, b. late 1849. In the

1885 court decree, both Mary SNEAD (BAYS) and heirs seem to have been dropped from suit.

Courtesy of Mme. Anne Bays (Note a few corrections in the 1994 Snead Publication): Joel J. Bays was a s/o John BAYS and Catherine WEBB. John BAYS was a s/o Peter BAYS (III), b. c1750, probably in Halifax Co. VA, and Susannah BARKER. Peter (III) died in RCV bef. 24 Nov 1801. He and Susannah also had a daughter, Susannah BAYS, who married Harrington LITTLE, s/o David LITTLE & Sarah SNEAD. (Personal Property Tax lists of Hawkins Co. TN confirm that this couple (Harrington & Susannah) lived in that county for a few years). They also had a son, James BAYS who, subsequently, had a daughter, Margaret BAYS who married James LITTLE , brother of Harrington. Another brother of John BAYS (m. Catherine WEBB), William BAYS, disappeared about 1797. In addition, Joel BAYS married Elizabeth “Betsy” unknown (perhaps also BAYS), Mary “Polly” married Andrew R. MARTIN and Peter (IV) married Margaret STONE.

As a point of interest, Andrew R. MARTIN and Mary BAYS by some accounts/opinions, had a daughter, Ellen (Helen) who married John C. LINTICUM (died, Lincoln, Crawford Co., KS., 1869) who murdered Robert BURK and his nephew, Vincent BROWNING in RCV, summer 1865, with Vincent BROWNING being the father of Charles Browning SNEAD, s/o Jane SNEAD, d/o Oliver. Another source states that Andrew J. MARTIN & Mary BAYS had no children, but rather took in persons as a matter of benevolence. Yet another source believes Helen to have been a FULLEN (perhaps a d/o Elizabeth (GRACE), wife of James FULLEN Jr. I believe Ellen, w/o John C. LINTECUM/LINTICUM’s (s/o John LINTECUM Sr. & Jerusha BOWE), Washington Co. birthplace (1850c) to perhaps be in error; I think she was more likely born in RCV. There exist no concrete documents to prove or disprove Helen’s parentage to my present knowledge (an effort in progress); at least one of the children of this couple died in Crawford Co. KS as late as 1949, and it is hoped that a death certificate for him (Austin B.) might shed some light on this dilemma. There is one female in the HH of Andrew and Mary MARTIN, 1830c, age 10-15; Helen was supposedly b. 1822 (tombstone records; albeit, imprecision of ages in census and otherwise at that era, recognized.).

McGonigle Cemetery, Crawford Co. KS (north of Bone Creek Reservoir, Arcadia… near what once was the town of Picton KS (transcribed by Carol Brooks): LINTECUM, A. (Andrew) W. G., b. 7/28/1848; d. 1/06/1881; LINTECUM, Helen, b. 3/27/1822; d. 3/08/1904, w/o J.C.; LINTECUM, John C., b. 2/17/1814; d. 12/28/1869; LINTECUM, Junia Atta (Juaniaatta), b. 12/16/1882; d. 8/13/1884, d/o A. B. & M. E. Three MARTINs are buried in this cem.

Fairview Cemetery (aka Englevale Cemetery), Crawford Co. KS (one mile w. of town of Englevale, Arma, KS (internet; transcribed by Carol Brooks): LINTECUM, Austin B., b. 1856; d. 1949; LINTECUM, John A., b. 1900; d. 1958; LINTECUM, Margaret E., b. 1863; d. 1944. It is interesting to observe the large number of MARTINs in this cemetery.

Peter BAYS (III) was the son of Peter BAYS II, b. in 1723, Henrico Co. VA (St. John’s Parish) and married Sarah (surname unk.; perhaps STONE), with Peter BAYS II being the s/o Peter BAYS I, b. c1685 either in England or New Kent Co. VA. His wife was Sarah, surname unk.

Records of Joel BAYS (m. Mary SNEAD, d/o Henry) in RCV begin by 03 Jun 1834 (LOB: 10:142) and he is listed there in the personal property tax lists beginning 1836 (Eastern Dist.), excepting 1838, through 1854. He is listed in the Land Tax Book in 1853 and 1854 and RCV LOB 13:77: records an indenture of bargain & sale for land from Joel J. BAYS, dated 08 Mar 1854, adm. to record 20 Mar 1854. IBID. 13:122: Deed of bargain & sale from Joel J. BAYS and wife to Benjamin E. JOHNSON, dated and adm. to record, 10 Aug 1854. He paid land tax in RCV a final time in 1855 and thereafter he is listed in Lee County VA Tax Books, 1856 – 1859 and 1863, 1865 through 1894 about which time he is assumed to have died, since in 1895 his land is listed in son, John H. BAYS’ name. The 1890 Lee Co. VA Land Tax Book lists the land of Joel J. BAYS as 80 acres in Poor Valley (land from J. H. BAYS).

This family has not been located in VA in 1860; some information leads one to suspect they may have been traveling in TN at 1860 census time; however, no listing is found in the 1860 TN census index.

By 1870, they are in Lee Co. VA, HH102: BAYS, Joel, 58, b. RCV; Mary, 50, RCV; Virginia, 15, Scott Co. The Scott Co. VA birth, judging from other records, including tax lists, is unexplained. The listing prior is: HH101: BAYS, John, 24, RCV; Alamy (?; Reany?), age ?, b. Berathate (Breathitt) Co. KY. The Breathitt Co. KY info is interesting as Mary SNEAD’s Aunt Elizabeth CHAPMAN and family dwelt in that county.

1.c. Robert SNEAD, b. c1822 (1850c, Knox Co. TN); living, 1880-5 in TN. According to Index to Goodspeed’s History of TN: “SNEAD, Robert (MD), b. 20 Dec 1820, WCV.” Robert is found in the 1850c, Knox Co. TN, 31St. Subdiv., Este Dist., 06 Dec 1850: HH405: McMILLAN, Elizabeth, 45… SNEED, Robert, 28, doctor, b. VA. It appears he is in a boarding house with several other people, the only other of whom was born in VA was JONES, John, 22, VA.

In 1860c, Knox Co. TN, HH 200/181: SNEAD, Robert, 37, doctor, $6000/$6700, VA; Malinda, 31, TN; Robert LEA, 14, VA, living in the 16th Dist. Is this Robert LEA (Lee) , 14, 1860c, the same LEE, Robert, 4, in the 1850 RCV HH of Mathias LEE & Elizabeth SNEAD (see below), hence a nephew of the subject Robert SNEAD, even though a Robert LEE, 13 is listed in RCV HH?

By 1870, Robert is still found in the 16 th Civil District of Knox Co. TN, 23 Aug 1870: HH317/306: SNEAD, Robert, 49, VA, physician; Malinda, 43, TN; LEE, Martha, 14, VA; ELROD, Martha, 9, TN (note the uncertainty of Lee/Lea as a surname or middle name!).

1.e. Spencer W. SNEAD, b. c1826; died in TX before 1885, “went to TX and died leaving no heirs”. Spencer is listed in Scott Co. VA, 1850c with wife Nancy, said to be Nancy McREYNOLDS (ref. [email protected] and [email protected]). 1850c, Scott Co. VA, HH1383: SNEAD, Spencer W., 24, blacksmith; Nancy, 20. In RootsWeb records, Nancy is called Nancy McREYNOLDS. From WCV Minute Book 22:69, 24 Sep 1877, it is implied that Spencer SNEAD and Oliver ROSE were alive (but both dead by 1880 or 1885). Almost surely Spencer was Spencer White SNEAD, for his Uncle Spencer WHITE (married Elizabeth KESTNER, sister of Jane KESTNER m. Henry SNEAD.).

Titus Co. TX, 1860c Index (Ronald Vern Jackson. AISI. 1985, p. 389): SNEED, Spencer, p. 170, Sparks Pct. This census entry has been read: (p. 53, Sparks Pct.): SNEED, Spencer, 22 (sic?), blacksmith, VA; Nancy, 26 (?) do. (ditto); Thomas, 5, IN. I am unable to locate any of the three thereafter to this point.

1850c, Lee Co. VA: HOUNDSHELL, John, 1 male 20-30; 1 female 20-30 -? Near this listing is another John HOUNDSHELL, likely John Sr. and father of subject John. (Also, see John HOUNSHELL, 62, VA/VA/VA, 1880c, Manchester, Clay Co. KY, p. 532D: HOWNSHELL, John, 62, VA/VA/VA; Melishia, 62, VA/VA/VA; Rachel, 25, KY; Henry, 24, KY; Mandy, 21, KY. I believe this to be John and Felicia.

1.g. male SNEAD who died under the age of 21 “soon after his father” (Henry SNEAD having died in 1864). Henry SNEAD needs to be located in the 1860 census to confirm this son’s name. This could be one of the males in the 1850c, WCV previously ascribed to Bolling SNEAD.

2. Oliver Nickerson SNEAD (Oliver N. in rare RCV Court Records; see RCV LOB 12:390, 1851, “Nickerson O. SNEAD”), b. 1794, Halifax Co. 2.e. Sarah/Martha (“Patsy”) Jane SNEAD, b. 1827, RCV; d. after 1886/8 (likely early/mid 1890’s); bur. WCV; at least 10 children. Not named in Nickerson SNEAD court suit (perhaps because of identify of whereabouts or lifestyle unorthodox?). The name Sarah Jane is from the death certificate of her son, Charles Browning SNEAD; Martha Jane and Patsy SNEAD derive from marriage records (VA Vital Stats./Richmond and private marriage register of Rev. Alexr. LITTLE.)

Jane Snead was the mother of at least 9 children. Long supposed that “M. J. Snead” married David B. VANCIL/VENCIL, was Mary SNEAD, sister of Jane; however, courtesy of Mr. Michael DYE, the original record was consulted from the VA Vital Statistics film, which revealed that Martha Jane SNEAD, 35 (sic), single, b. RCV, d/o Oliver & Rachel SNEAD, married in RCV, 24 Apr 1866 (yet another record of Rev. Alexr. Little listing “Patsy” SNEAD, says 01 May 1866), D. B. VANSIL, 38, b. IL, s/o Jonas VANSIL & Elizabeth. One child was born to Jane after marrying David VANSIL, Elizabeth SNEAD (note surname), b. c1870 or 1871.

It was long thought in error that Mary SNEAD, sister of Jane, married David VENSIL, but the chancery causes above clearly indicate that as late as 1877 through 1885, Mary remained referred to as Mary FIELDS, wife of Joseph FIELDS and this is also born out by the 1860 and 1870 censuses of RCV listing this couple and death records of their children. Therefore, the Jane VENCIL and Jane “VANCE” (sic) referred to in RCV Law Order Book 17:49, 05 Sep 1871 records is Martha/Sarah Jane SNEAD, not her sister Mary FIELDS. At that time, “On the motion of Jane VANCIL the court doth appoint her guardian of Charles SNEAD and thereupon the said Jane VANCIL intered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $200 together with J. J. WALDEN and Crockett SNEAD her sureties…”. From this, one might surmise that Jane SNEAD might have by then separated from David VANCIL. David VANCIL/VENCIL was born in 1817 in IL and he had married at age 44, wid., b. IL, in WCV, 28 Feb 1861, Catherine FRICK, 33, wid., b. RCV, d/o Jos. & Elizabeth ALDERSON. The presiding minister was also Rev. Alex LITTLE.

Jane SNEAD/VANCIL is not found in the area censuses of 1870 or 1880; however, by 1880, David VANCIL, matching the age he had given at his marriage to Martha J./Patsy SNEAD in 1866, at age 52, is found in the Bird TWP of Macoupin Co. of his native IL, p. 19B. VANCIL, David, 52, IL/PA/PA; James E., son, 22, IL/IL/TN; Wm. W., son, 19, IL/IL/TN; Mary E., dau., 24, IL/IL/TN; Wm. O., gsn, 4; Herbert E., 3m.

1850c, WCV, HH470: VANCIL, David, 32; Sarah, 59; Mary, 14; 1860c, WCV, HH86/86: VANCEL, David B., 42, IL; Sally, 68; Sally MOORE, 40; Martha MOORE, 13; Isabella, 5; Sarah, 2/12. As David VANCIL was a widow, supposedly at age 44, at the occasion of his marriage in Washington Co. VA in 1861, perhaps these (the elder ones listed in 1880c, IL) are children of his first marriage?

The name Sarah Jane SNEAD is from the death certificate of her son, Charles Browning SNEAD; however, all other records seem to call her Jane or Martha J. or Patsy (nickname for Martha). Patsy is the last known record (14 Jun 1886, WCV Execution Book). In 1850c, Jane SNEAD was dwelling as a second family in RCV in the HH of Richard WALDEN and his wife, Anna HOCKETT and family. In 1860c, RCV, she is listed as age 32, weaver, and some of her children are dispersed in other households. For example David Crockett WALDEN (SNEAD) in the HH of his half brother, John WALDEN.

2.h. Mary SNEAD, b. 1833 (age 16, 1850c, RCV); d. after 1885. Mary married Joseph FIELDS, s/o Elizabeth FIELDS, listed next to the Oliver & Rachel (HH919) in 1850c, RCV, HH920: FIELDS, Elisabeth, 47, NC; Joseph, 24; Priscilla, 16; James R., 14; Lafayette M., 9; Julina H., 8; Maria L., 6; David B., 4 & Rosanna, 6m. Could the “David B.” be named for David B. VANCIL?

Joseph FIELDS was a brother to Randolph FIELDS who married the sister of Mary SNEAD, Rosannah SNEAD. They were sons of William FIELDS and Elizabeth BUCKLEY with Elizabeth BUCKLEY being the d/o Randolph BUCKLEY (see Benj. Snead History) & Ann ROPER. Elizabeth’s mother Ann was living with her in 1860c (research of M. A. DYE.).

Loucinda F., 23; Ward J. J, 2; SNEAD, Oliver, 21 (boarder). I have not located this family after 1870, but it is obvious from death records following that some of the children remained in the area. Regarding the youngest children in 1870c, Leah, Mary: 1880c, RCV, HH 87A: FIELDS, Joel, 32, KY; Mary, 46, VA/NC/VA; Leah, 19; Mary, 15; James, 11 (Elbert in 1870?); Malissa, 9; Melvin, 7; Aaron, 5; Francis, 2 – or a different Mary?

The 1860 and 1870 families are obviously the same families and proven to be those of Joseph FIELDS and Mary SNEAD by death records; this coupled with the estate papers of Nickerson SNEAD should sufficiently prove that it was definitely not she that married David B. VANCIL in 1866, but rather her sister, Martha/Sarah J.(Jane) “Patsy” SNEAD.

Unnamed child, d/o Joseph & Mary FIELDS, b. 01 Aug 1861; Leah FIELDS, d/o Joseph & Mary FIELDS, b. 22 Oct 1860; Mary FIELDS, d/o Joseph & Mary, b. 10 May 1865. A Joseph J. FIELDS, 6y, s/o Joseph & Mariah, died in RCV 11 Aug 1873: RCV: Ronenia (Roena, 1860c, RCV, HH501) FERGUSON, White female, married, b. 06 Feb 1856, RCV; d. 05 Jan 1938, d/o Joe FIELDS, RCV & Mary SNEAD, RCV; bur. FERGUSON Cem. (Lebanon)

The death of yet another child of Joseph FIELDS & Mary SNEAD: Washington Co. VA (WCV), North Fork, Brumley Gap: Lizzie Jane WISE, white female, widow, DOB not known, about 82; d. 21 Jul 1934, b. VA, d/o Joseph FIELDS, VA & Mary SNEADE, VA; W. M. WISE, Holston, VA; BUCK Grave Yard

It is interesting to observe in RootsWeb that a W. Elbert FIELDS, b. 1877, m. Martha E. GILLENWATER, b.1833, d/o Thomas J. GILLENWATER, b. 24 Jan 1860, Breathitt, KY & Mary Alice FLANARY, b. 1864.

At any rate, it is clear from the WCV court papers of 1877, 1878 and 1880/5, Mary, d/o Rachel and Oliver SNEAD is Mary FIELDS as she had been called since her marriage to Joseph FIELDS c1851.

2.i: Paul SNEAD, b. 1835; d. circa Spring 1876; m. in RCV, 20 Sep 1864, Mahala SPURGEON, 45, widow, b. WCV; Mahala died after 1886, probably in RCV. From RCV records, it might be inferred that Mahala was married (1) to (blank) BABB, or a d/o a BABB. Paul SNEAD is not listed among the heirs of Nickerson SNEAD, but is so identified as s/o Oliver, at his marriage. He was, of course, deceased long before the time of the Nickerson Oliver estate settlement. See RCV census information and writeup of M. Dye on the BABB, SNEAD and GILBERT families.

2.j: Napoleon B. (surely Bonaparte!?) SNEAD, b. c1837; m. in RCV, 24 Dec 1857, Margaret Y. FRICK, b. c1842, d/o Christopher FRICK & Leah Catherine ALDERSON. 3 known ch.: Vincent B. SNEAD, b. c1858; Beauregard SNEAD, b. 02 Aug 1861 and (unk) SNEAD, male, b. 25 Feb 1865. Although Napoleon was identified as a s/o Oliver & Rachel SNEAD at his marriage in RCV, he is not party to the settlement of the estate

19

of Nickerson SNEAD although it is clear he was alive with children in MO after having exited RCV probably 1865 or shortly thereafter.

Napoleon B. SNEAD has been located on the 1880 census of Jackson Co. MO, Sniabar, p. 137C: SNEAD, Napoleon B., 42, VA/VA/VA; Margaret J., 39, VA/VA/VA; Vincent B., 21; Beauregard, 18, VA; Ella, 13, VA; John, 10, VA; Amanda V., 7, mO; Katie, 4, MO; Charles W., 3, MO; Hary S., 1. His whereabouts must have been unknown when the suit over his Uncle Nickerson SNEAD’s estate was instituted.

2.k. Karen H. SNEAD (Can this be other than Karenhappuch?), b. c1840; d. in Wise Co. VA, 19 Aug 1912: Wise Co. VA, Appalachia: Mrs. Cary AISTROP, white female, widow, b. Nov (no year given), 73y, housewife, b. VA, parents, “don’t know”; reported by O. P. (Oliver Perry) AISTROP, Appalachia, VA; died 19 Aug 1912. Many of this family also lived in Lee Co. VA. Karen married in RCV, 23 Jan 1871, Vanranselrei AISTROP, b. c1843, Henry Co. VA; d. after 1910, prob. in Smyth Co. (perhaps SW VA State Hosp.), s/o Oliver Perry AISTROP & Sarah “Sally” Frances FARRIS; 9 ch. (see Ancestors/Descs. of Benj. Snead…)

At the time of her marriage in RCV, Karen is listed as a d/o Oliver & Rachel SNEAD and although alive and in relative proximity to Abingdon, WCV, she is not named as an heir of Oliver SNEAD in the estate of his brother, Nickerson.

2.l: Isaiah Drake SNEAD, b. 1842, RCV; m. in RCV, 08 Feb 1878, Elizabeth Jane GARRETT, b. 1854, d/o Peggy (Margaret?) GARRETT. I am unable to locate a “Peggy GARRETT” in RCV and had, at least previously, thought that Elizabeth was a d/o William & Mary GARRETT. Three children had been born to this couple by the time of the 1880c: Margaret SNEAD, b. c1873; Samuel SNEAD, b. c1875 and John SNEAD, b. c1876; Elizabeth is called Jane, age 25, in this census. This family has not yet been traced beyond 1880c, RCV, but it is apparent that Isaiah was alive at the estate settlement of Nickerson SNEAD, 1885.

2.m: Felicia Florence SNEAD, b. 1844, RCV; d. in RCV, 14 Feb 1886; never married.

3. Nickerson SNEAD (believed to have been Nickerson Oliver SNEAD), b. 1798, Halifax Co. VA; d. in WCV, 01 Apr 1869; bur. Old Glade Cem.; m. in WCV, 24 May 1822, Elizabeth SCOTT, d/o William SCOTT (d. bef. 1803) and Jane “Jenny” WHITLEY (d. 1823, about 65y, d/o Robert WHITLEY & Catherine) who, in turn, were married 12 Jun 1794. Elizabeth SCOTTs siblings were: Mary SCOTT, John SCOTT, Jane SCOTT and perhaps Robert, William, and Samuel. Elizabeth SCOTT had married (1) Armstrong BEATIE, s/o David Beattie, b. 1744, Carr’s Creek (now Rockbridge Co. VA) & Mary. Armstrong BEATIE was born 17 May 1792; d. 20 Jan 1820, age 27; they had a son, William BEATIE, b. 29 Dec 1818; d. 04 Sep 1821. Elizabeth SCOTT (BEATIE) married (2) Dr. Nickerson SNEAD; no children. The estate of Nickerson SNEAD was quite substantial and with no children of his own, the disposition of the estate required substantial research to locate the numerous heirs; hence the good information which we have at present from 1877, 1878, 1880 & 1885. There is also

much information on the disposition of estate of the widow, Elizabeth SCOTT BEATIE SNEAD.

1850c, WCV HH615: SNEAD, Nick, 32, physician; Elizabeth, 49; EDMONDSON, Sarah, 36; ROSE, Fleming (note Fleming ROSE also listed in HH of another uncle, John SNEAD, below.)

4. John R. SNEAD , b. Halifax Co. VA; d. after 1870, likely in Sedalia, MO. He married Rosannah MEEK, b. c1798, d/o Samuel MEEK. Residing, 1840, in Smyth Co. VA & also in the 1850c, Smyth Co. VA: SNEAD, John, 49, physician; Rosanna, 52; Martha, 18; Samuel M., 21; John, 17; Emily S., 15; Sarah F., 13; James H., 11 and with them PEARCE, Ezra J., 30, TN; Mary E., 24; John M., 3; Augusta A., 1 and a nephew of John, ROSE, Flemming, 20, laborer.

Ezra PIERCE was b. in 1820, VA, the s/o Thomas P. PIERCE, b. 07 Jan 1790, Guilford Co. NC and Mary (Polly) STUART, b. 17 Oct 1791, Jefferson Co. TN. He married Mary Scott SNEAD, b. 1827, VA, on 29 Jan 1846, Greene Co. TN; at least two ch.: John Moses PIERCE, b. 16 Jan 1847, WCV & Samuel B. PIERCE, b. 1852.

A daughter, Martha F. Snead, b. 1832, m. in Smyth Co. VA, 11 Oct 1851, Henry TOTTEN, b. c1826, who was living with Samuel TOTTEN, 74 and Rachel, 75 in 1850c, Smyth Co. VA. See further for TOTTEN in MO. According to one source, Samuel TOTTEN was married to Rachel SUITER/SUITOR. One of their children, Drucilla TOTTEN, married Thomas WILSON and settled in Grundy Co. MO before 1850c.

By 1860, John is found in Pettis Co. MO, Hudson TWP, HH714/714: SNEED, John, 67, VA; Mary, 77, VA, nearby are HH716/716: SNEED, H. G., 38, KY; Elizabeth, 32; Mary Jane, 9, MO; Margaret, 12; John, 7; Martha A., 5; Sarah E., 3 & Allice, 1 and HH721/721: SNEED, A. J., 29, KY; Elizabeth, 28, KY; Wm. A., 11, MO; James M., 9, MO; John B., 7, MO; Sarah E., 5, MO; Samuel H., 3, MO; Arineta J., 9/12, MO with JOHNSON, W. J., 21, KY (laborer)

1870c, Pettis Co. MO, Flat Creek TWP, 09 Jul 1870: HH6/6: SNEED, John, 68, VA, physician; John S., 30, school teacher, VA; TOTEN, Henry, 46, VA; Martha, 32, VA. It would seem from this that Rosannah had either died by 1860 or is called Mary in 1860 and certainly was deceased by 1870 at which time John was living in the HH of his daughter and son-in-law.

1880c, Georgetown, Pettis Co. MO, p. 1050: SNEAD, John, 78, physician, VA/VA/VA; TOTTEN, Henry, son-in-law, 56, VA/VA/VA; Martha, 48, dau.; SNEAD, John M., gsn., 9, KS

There is likely much more to discover in MO on the other children of John SNEAD and Rosannah MEEK.

At this point, it should be mentioned that a Benjamin SNEAD Jr., estimated to have been born c1803 appears on the PPTL of RCV in 1824. He is not, however, listed as a sibling

21

Page 22: SNEAD FAMILY (HALIFAX, RUSSELL, WASHINGTON COSvarussel/families/Snead_Supplement_May_…  · Web view(Note the word, living brothers and sisters.) l. Henry SNEAD who died before

of Nickerson SNEAD and could have been a child of Bolling or Micajah SNEAD or a sibling who died before Nickerson.

5. Adam SNEAD , c1805, RCV; living in WCV, 1850c, age 45y with wife, Mary, believed to have been Mary LIGHT (also written LITE), surely originally of Patrick Co. VA. 1850c, WCV, HH69: SNEAD, Adam, 45; Mary, 60; LIGHT, Sarah, 65; GRAHAM, Viney, 21; Mary J., 1; Sarah E., 2. Sarah LITE/LIGHT is double listed, also being enumerated in the 1850c, RCV with some of her relatives. No marriage record for Adam has been found; LIGHT, however, for Mary’s surname is also listed in the research of [email protected]. In 1877, it is stated only that Adam SNEAD sold his right in the estate of Nickerson SNEAD to Mansfield ASBURY. Since he is not found in the 1870c, he either moved from the area or was deceased by that time; no known heirs.

6. Sarah “Sallie” SNEAD , m. Cornelius ROSE, likely in RCV, c1825; based on a child born c1826-7, a very rough estimate of Sarah’s birth date is c1807. The husband of Sally SNEAD is found in RCV OB 11:25: 05 Mar 1839, Ordered that Fleming ROSE, orphan of Cornelius ROSE be bound out as an apprentice according to law. Oliver ROSE and Willis ROSE, who moved to MO with Sarah SNEAD ROSE, remained there; Fleming came back to VA for a period and was living in WCV (also listed in Smyth Co. VA) in 1850c. Causes in Chancery confirm that Sarah SNEAD and Cornelius ROSE had three children: Willis ROSE (b. c1828 or 1827); Fleming ROSE (b. c1830-3, 1850c) and Oliver ROSE (b. c1826, 1850c). At least two off the ROSE children left RCV either with their mother or alone to live with their Aunt Nancy ASBURY about 1839 or thereafter.

The likely ancestry of Cornelius ROSE was kindly supplied to me by Ms. Christine ROSE, ROSE Family Assn.: Montgomery Co. VA DB I&J:443-5, 10 Aug 1826: Elisabeth ROSE, Andrew ROSE and Cornelius ROSE & Sally his wife and Elizabeth ADNEY and Daniel ADNEY, Andrew ROSE to David CRAIG, all of Montgomery Co. for $50, all their interest(,) claim and partition to land on Elliotts Creek, containing 58 acres, same land conveyed by David CRAIG and Mary his wife to Israel ROSE decd., dated 29 May 1806. /s/ Cornelis (his x mark) ROSE (ackn. 10 Aug 1826); Sally (her x mark) ROSE (ackn. 10 Aug 1826); Sarah (her x mark) ROSE (ackn. 10 Sep 1821). Rec., 28 Feb 1827.

Ms. Christine ROSE pointed out to me the listing in the Russell Co. VA 1830c for Cornelius ROSE, but no such listing in the 1830c, Montgomery Co. VA. In 1830c, RCV, 2 young males are listed in the HH of Cornelius & Sarah ROSE. Fleming, of course, is listed in the 1839 RCV court record.

Israel ROSE married in Montgomery Co. VA, 09 Feb 1785, Elizabeth STEPHENS.

1850c: Smyth Co. VA & WCV (see above John SNEAD and Nickerson SNEAD with Fleming ROSE, nephew, listed in each household.). 1850c, Howard Co. MO, 28 Oct 1850, p. 188: HH7/7: ASBURY, Nancy, 40, VA; B. L. (male), 14, VA; Wm., 11; Moses, 9; H. (or F. – female), 8; Mildred, 6; Nancy, 2; ROSE, Oliver, 23, VA; Willis, 21, VA. Nancy ASBURY is Nancy SNEAD, their aunt; see further.

Benjamin ROSE, a. 4y, 1850c is found in 1880c, HH136/135, Boons Lick, Howard Co., MO: ROSE, Benj. F., 24, MO/VA/MO; Amelia F., 19, MO/MO/MO; Girtrem, dau., 1m. Further, I believe John, age 1, 1850c, s/o Fleming to be: 1880c, Chariton, Howard Co. MO: ROSE, John O., 30, MO/VA/MO, tie cropper with ARMSTRONG, Wm., 50, IR; BARGER, Davis W., 29, VA/VA/VA; McCULLY, Andrew, 21, MO/TN/KY, and the “John O. ROSE” referred to in the WCV court documents.

1870c, Clinton Co. MO: ROSE, Oliver, 36, MO with HEATER (Heaten?), Joseph, 21, OH & Missouri A., 43, MO family. I am not sure if this is the subject Oliver ROSE. 1870c, Howard Co. It has been stated that Oliver and Fleming ROSE were dead by 1877/8. 1880c, Howard Co. MO, HH137/144 (Boons Lick): ROSE, Mary O., 36, MO/SC/NC; Willis H., 23, son, MO, MO/MO/MO; John F., 21, son, MO/MO/MO; Jane(?), dau., 12, MO/KY/KY. It is interesting to observe that in Howard Co. MO, 03 Feb 1867, a Mrs. Mary O. ROSE married John M. SMITH…!

Willis ROSE was still alive in 1900 census, Howard Co. MO, Boonlick TWP, HH279/2798: ROSE, Harvey, May 1854, 42; Kate Q., Dec. 1857, 43, married 20 years; Flora, Jan 1892, 18; Jessie (f), Aug 1883, 17; Willis, Aug 1885, 14; Jesse (m), Jun 1888, 11; Leo, Aug 1886, 3 & ROSE, Willis, father, May 1828, 72, VA/VA/VA.

7. Nancy SNEAD , b. RCV, 20 Jul 1813; d. 13 Jan 1885 (Howard Co. Cem Records, p. 38 (Cem. name not avail.), “ASBURY, Nancy, b. Taswell (sic: RCV) Co. MO (one-time site of Baptist Church), “ASBURY, Robert, b. Taswell (Tazwell) Co. VA, 12-22-1812; d. 3-16-1848 35y 2m 24d” (Howard Co. MO Cem. Records, p. 90(?); moved to MO by 1840-41. Nancy died in Howard Co. MO at age 72y (b. c1812), on 13 Jan 1885, a widow, b. VA who had lived in MO 45y (MO Pioneer, Vol XV, Mar 1972, p. 109). The given name of her husband is not positively known but assumed through elimination to have been Robert ASBURY, above, and, given a child, Moses ASBURY, who, had a son, Robert ASBURY (see further) and the fact that her sister, Frances SNEAD married Moses ASBURY, I tend to suspect that both may have been related and perhaps of some kin to

Henry ASBURY of Tazewell Co. VA. More research needs to be done on this family. Henry ASBURY’s will was proved in Tazewell Co. VA (Harmon, VI, 1922, p. 275), Nov 1826 (WB I:209), listing wife, Martha; sons, Wm. & Jessee; daus. Polly, Jinny, Betsy & Rebecca, & sons Moses, Aaron, James & Thomas. RootsWeb has a Moses ASBURY, b. 1810, Tazewell Co. VA, s/o Wm. ASBURY, b. 1776 & Polly SMITH, b. 1779 who married Frances (surname not given)? Unidentified with Moses, Nancy, Benjamin & Robert (grandson of Robert & Nancy) in Howard Co. Mo. Cems., p. 38 is, “ASBURY, William N. s/o R. S. & N., died 16 Feb 1824”.

As stated, it appears that Nancy SNEAD ASBURY and family moved to the Howard Co. MO area sometime around 1840 to 1842. There were two other ASBURY families in the area: That of Calvin ASBURY, b. OH and that of “Rolly” (Raleigh) ASBURY, from Fauquier Co. VA. A Mary (Polly) EVANS, b. MO m. John ASBURY, 01 Feb 1849, Howard Co. MO (Early Settlers of MO. IV. J. Givens, Vol. 11, No. 4, p. 117).

1850c, Howard Co. MO, 28 Oct 1850, p. 188: HH7/7: ASBURY, Nancy, 40, VA; B. L. (male), 14, VA; Wm., 11, VA; Moses, 9, MO; F. (female; Felicia), 8; Mildred, 6; Nancy, 2; ROSE, Oliver, 23, VA; Willis, 21, VA (both nephews, sons of her sister, Sarah “Sallie” SNEAD, m. Cornelius ROSE).

1860c, Howard Co. MO, p. 536, Boonlick TWP, HH933/894: ASHBERRY, Nancy, 41, VA (amazing feat of age!); B. S., 23, VA (male); Wm., 22, VA; Moses, 20, VA; Filitia (Felicia), 17, VA; Malinda, 13, MO; Nancy, 11, MO (obviously the VA to MO migration is a bit imprecise in this census, unless Nancy was b. 1819 instead of c1809!?). Fleming ROSE, nephew, is listed near her in 1860c. Note that, roughly, the Mildred of 1850 might be the Malinda of 1860 and 1870 censuses!

1870c, Howard Co. MO, Boonlick TWP, 06 Aug 1870, HH272/272: ASBURY, Nancy, 57, VA; Moses, 29, VA; Benjamin, 34, VA; Wm., 32, VA; Eliza, 27; Malinda, 22, MO; Nancy, 20, MO; Hamilton, 12, MO. Interestingly, HH267/267 is: ASBURY, A. F., 27, MO; Cynthia A., 22; Ida C., 2; Malinda, 1. For this latter couple, see Howard Co. (MO) Mars, Book 4A, 1860-1871, p. 58: 02 Dec 1866: A. Frank ASBERRY married in Howard Co. MO, 02 Dec 1866, Cynthy Ann SNEAD. Relationship(s) to Nancy ASBURY, if any unk. This latter couple is living in 1870c, Howard Co. MO, Boonlick TWP, HH276/276: ASBURY, A. F., 27; Cynthia A., 22; Ida C., 2; Malinda, 1

In neighboring Bonne Femme (MO) TWP, 1870c, there are two households with ASBURYs b. in VA: 29/29: ASBURY, Sallie, 30, VA with 4 children & HH32/32: ASBURY, John, 45, VA & family.

1880c, Howard Co. MO, Boonlick TWP, 02 Jun 1880, HH19/19: ASBERRY, Nancy, 65, VA/VA/VA; Benjamin, 45, VA/VA/VA; Moses, 40, VA/VA/VA; Laura, wife (of Moses), 35, MO/TN/MO; BALLENE, Henry, Farmer, 35, MO/KY/KY; FOX, Wm., black, 17, servant; SCOTTON, Susan (wid. of John, see 1860c), no relation stated, 51, KY/KY/VA; Milton, son, 24, KY/KY/VA; Mary A., 18, dau.; Jeff, 17; Thos, 14… last few b. Howard Co. MO, 05 Sep 1869, Nancy Jane ASBURY m. A. KEATHLY.

Howard Co. MO, 14 May 1861, Felicia F. ASBURY married John T. MARSHALL.

Howard Co. MO, 10 Feb 1878, Moses ASBURY married Laura SARTIN. This couple is living in 1900 in Howard Co. MO, Boonlick TWP, HH59/59: ASBURY, Moses, Feb 1840, 60, VA/VA/VA; Anna L., Sep 1846, 54, married 22 years with 5 children; 3 alive: Nick, July 1881, 11; Ruth, Dec.(?) 1886,13; Alice C., July 1889, 10 & Mary, Jan. 1884 (mentions 3 alive, but lists 4 children); with them is Frank FISHER, farm hand, 40. Howard Co. (MO) Cem. Records, p. 38 (with Nancy: “ASBURY, Moses, b. Taswell Co. VA 22 Feb 1849; d. 17 Jul 1911; ASBURY, Robert, s/o M. & A. L., b. 24 Oct 1883; d. 12 Aug 1885.

Howard Co. MO, 29 Nov 1882, Benjn. ASBURY married Sue BUTTS who is listed on the 1880c, Howard Co. MO as b. c1853, d/o William BUTTS. Benjamin ASBURY died in Howard Co. MO at age 48y 3m 3d on 18 Jan 1885, a farmer, widower, b. VA and in MO 43y (MO Pioneers, Vol XV, Mar 1972, p. 109). A slightly different date is given in Howard Co. (MO) Cem. Recs., p. 38: “ASBURY, Benjamin, d. 13 Jan 1885 48y 2m 28d”.) Mrs. Susan ASBURY, age 30y, died in Howard co. MO, 22 Jan 1884, 30y, b. MO (IBID., Howard Co. – Death Register, 1883-1887, p. 108). Howard Co. MO Births 1883-1892: ASBURY, Mary Jane, first child, b. 09 January 1884, Boonlick Mo, to Susan BUTTS ASBURY, b. MO & Benjamin ASBURY, b. VA; farmer & trader.

8. Elizabeth SNEAD married, c1823-4, Edmond/Edmund CHAPMAN and moved firstly to Lee Co. VA (1840c) and thereafter to Breathitt Co. Kentucky. No precise estimate of her birth date is available, but it is stated that she died before 1869 and that she lived in KY. Initially (1877), only 1 child was identified, George W. CHAPMAN (of Mayfield, KY), but by the 1885 settlement, most of the 7 heirs were identified; they were: V. (Virginia) M. SMITH (Virginia Chapman m. (blank) SMITH) (share bought by Mansfield ASBURY; Eliza CHAPMAN, m. (blank) WYATT; Rachel CHAPMAN, m. Montgomery(?) HOUNSHELL; B. S. CHAPMAN; G. W. (prob. George Washington) CHAPMAN, J. S. (believed to have been John Sneed) CHAPMAN and F. M. (Francis Marion?) CHAPMAN. It appears, estimating from the birth of the child, Lafayette, that Edmond CHAPMAN married Nancy ELDRIDGE by about 1847, making one estimate the death of Betsy SNEAD CHAPMAN circa 1845.

1830c Russell Co. VA: CHAPMAN, Edmund, 2 males age 5-10; 1 male age 30-40 and 2 females aged 5-14, 1 female aged 10-15 and 1 female aged 30-40.

1840c, Lee Co. VA: CHATMAN, Edmond, 1 male under 5y; 1 male age 5-10y; 2 males age 10-15y; 1 male aged 40-50y and 1 female under 5y; 1 female age 5-10y; 1 female age 15-20y and 1 female age 40-50y, signifying a birth of Elizabeth SNEAD between 1800-1810. Near this family in 1840 are many SNEAD and SNEAD-connected relatives/families, i.e., that of John HOUNSHELL (Jr., m. Felicia SNEED, d/o Henry and niece of Elizabeth CHAPMAN; a much older John HOUNSHELL, probably John Jr.’s father is nearby.), Peter BAYSE (Bays); Harrington LITTLE (and James LITTLE) (s/o David LITTLE and Sarah SNEAD who was a sister of Benjamin SNEAD, father of Elizabeth CHAPMAN.

1850c, Breathitt Co. KY, Dist. 1, HH235/235: CHAPMAN, George, 25, VA; Jemima, 21; Nancy, 3; Fulton, 1. IBID. HH10/10: CHAPMAN, Edmund, 53, VA; Nancy, 41; Virginia, 12; John, 16; Marion, 11; Lafayette, 2; George, 82, VA. From other records, it is surmised that Elizabeth “Betsy” SNEAD, wife of Edmond CHAPMAN died after the birth of Francis Marion CHAPMAN, c1838 or 1839 as from the 1870c of Breathitt Co., it appears that Nancy (ELDRIDGE), Edmond’s second wife, is dwelling with her assumed son, Lafayette.

1860c, Breathitt Co. KY, HH396/396: CHAPMAN, John, 27, VA; Barthena, 20, Breathitt Co.; Mary, 1. IBID. HH397/397: CHAPMAN, F. M., 24, VA; Charlotte, 18, Estill Co. KY; Emily, 2/12, Breathitt Co. KY. IBID., HH775/778: CHAPMAN, G. W., 32, VA; Gemima, 32; Nancy E., 13; Fulton, 8; Frances M., 6; Mary L., 2; John M., 5/12. IBID. HH778/778: CHAPMAN, Nancy, 38, VA; Lafayette, 12; Orlena, 8.

1870c, Breathitt Co. KY, Precinct 1, HH 1/1: CHAPMAN, George, 47, VA; Jemima, 41, VA; Fulton, 21; Marion, 14; Mary, 12; John, 10; George, 7; Ellen, 4; Seymore, 9/12. IBID., HH85/85: CHAPMAN, Fayat, 22, KY; Nancy, 50, VA. Lafayette said to be a child of G. W. in some records (see below.).

Information matching that for J. S. CHAPMAN and Rachel CHAPMAN is located from Mr. Benny Lane [email protected] who stated: Wolfe Co. KY: John Sneed CHAPMAN, b. 1833, s/o Edmound CHAPMAN & Nancy Sarah SNEED (I believe this should be Elizabeth “Betsy” SNEAD). John Sneed CHAPMAN married (1) Mary E. ADAMS, (3 children) and secondly Mary Bartinna (Bethinia) DAVIS, b. 1839 (9 children, all born in Wolfe Co. KY). IGI lists an Edmund G. CHAPMAN, b. 1818, KY who married Elizabeth (surname unk.), b. 1822 in KY with 7 children based on the 1870c of Gentry Co. MO. This, however, does not appear to be the subject couple.

To further back up this contention, in the research of Malinda (Sasser) Jones, “Descendants of ‘Lindy’ Malinda (Sasser) Jones”, it is stated that Thomas Jefferson JONES, b. 05 Mar 1836, Laurel Co. KY; d. 27 Mar 1917, Clay Co. KY, married as his fourth wife, Virginia HOUNSHELL, b. c1874, KY, d/o Montgomery “Tuck-Sr.” HOUNSHELL & Rachel CHAPMAN. Virginia is stated to be a great granddaughter of John C. & Christina MESSERSMITH HOUNSHELL. Further, it is stated that James “Squire” JONES, b. 08 Feb 1848, Clay Co. KY; d. 02 May 1926 m. Martha Ann HOUNSHELL, d/o Montgomery HOUNSHELL & Rachel CHAPMAN, granddaughter of Joseph HOUNSHELL & Sarah LAMBERT, b. 25 Sep 1851, Clay Co. KY; d. 07 Jul

1907, Clay Co. KY. Preston JONES, b. 1852, m. Sarah HOUNSHELL, c1872, Clay Co. KY. In the work, “Descendants of John Casper HOUNSHELL and Christina (MESSERSMITH) HOUNSHELL”, it is stated that John HOUNSHELL, b. c1788, Montgomery Co. VA; m. 02 Apr 1808, Wythe Co. VA, Sarah POWELL, among whose children was Henry Montgomery “Tuck” HOUNSHELL Sr., b. 05 Jun 1820, Wythe co. VA; d. 10 Jul 1899, Raders Creek, Clay Co. KY; m. (1) Rachel CHAPMAN, c1844, KY, their children being: Sarah HOUNSHELL, b. c1850, Breathitt Co. KY; Martha Ann HOUNSHELL, b. 25 Sep 1851. Clay Co. KY; d. 07 Jul 1907, Clay Co. KY (m. James “Squire” JONES) and Virginia HOUNSHELL, b. 15 Feb 1852, Clay Co. KY; d.. 08 Aug 1880, m. Thomas Jefferson JONES, c1874, KY; Louisa HOUNSHELL, b. 1855, Manchester, Clay Co. KY; Montgomery “Tuck” HOUNSHELL Jr., b. 24 Aug 1859, Raders Creek, KY; d. 1944; and, Theophelus Tolman HOUNSHELL, b. 07 Mar 1863, Clay Co. KY.

1870c, Clay Co. KY: HOUNDSHELL, Benjamin, 22, KY; Bony, 12, KY; Elizabeth, 21, KY; Gumry (Montgomery?), 49, VA; Henry, 18, VA; James H., 11/12, KY; Jane, 24, NC; John, 23, VA; Lizie, 15, KY; Maliney, 49, VA; Manda, 15, KY; Martha D., 13, KY; Mtgumry, 11, KY; Rachel, 21, VA; Theophilus, 9, KY; Virginia, 17, KY.

In further research, Rachel CHAPMAN is called also a d/o Edmond CHAPMAN and Nancy Sarah SNEED, whom I believe to be Elizabeth SNEAD, d/o Benjamin & Felicia and Rachel CHAPMAN and John Sneed CHAPMAN to be one and the same as the heirs of Elizabeth CHAPMAN mentioned in the estate of Nickerson SNEAD, 1885.

RootsWeb.com has the following: Edmond CHAPMAN, b. 1796, VA; s/o George CHAPMAN, b. 1769, VA & Francis EDDY; m. Nancy ELDRIDGE, b. 1809 in VA (ch.: Francis Marion, Virginia Jane, John S., Elzie, Ellen (or Orlena), George W.. A child of George W., Lafayette Attison CHAPMAN, b. 15 Jan 1848, Lee Co. VA. George W. CHAPMAN, b. 1824, s/o Edmond CHAPMAN, b. 1796, VA & Nancy ELDRIDGE, b. 1809, VA; m. 1824, Jemima RUSSELL (married in AL) – 9 ch. Francis Marion CHAPMAN, b. 1839, “Francis was from Russel (sic) Co. VA. After he moved to KY, he married & lived in Wolfe Co. KY… 6 ch.”; m. 1839, Owsley Co. KY, Charlotte SPARKS. John S. CHAPMAN, b. 1834; m. Berthenia DAVIS (also listed s/o Edmond & Nancy). Again, the names fit the children of Elizabeth SNEED and I am inclined to believe more the information giving SNEED as the name of the wife of Edmond CHAPMAN and, as the chancery causes papers of WCV contend, the first 7 children of Edmond CHAPMAN had Betsy SNEAD CHAPMAN as their mother.

1880c, KY (Soundex): CHAPMAN, Benjamin S., 54, VA; Powell Precinct (county?Breathitt?); Hanah, 35, MO; Frederick, 12, KY; John, 10, KY; Letty, 8, KY; Morgan, 6, KY; Breathitt Co. KY: George W. Much more work must be performed on this family.

9. Francis “Fanny” SNEAD , b. c1811, RCV; d. in WCV after 1880; m. in WCV, 10 Jan 1832, Moses ASBURY, b. 23 Dec 1808; d. 15 Jan 1865, bur. Old Glade Cem., Washington Co. VA, 1850c: ASBERRY, Moses, 40; Francis, 39; Mansfield, 15; Wm., 12; Louisa, 10; Lorenza D., 7 Catherine, 3; John, 8m

1860c, WCV: ASBERRY, Moses, 40; Frances, 49 (sic: 39); Mansfield, 26; Elizabeth, 24; Wm., 21; Lorenzo, 18; John, 11; SNEAD, “Phillissa” (Felicia OLIVER), 90. Frances and the younger children continue to be listed in the WCV 1870 and 1880 censuses. Mansfield ASBURY, son, bought several of the shares of the estate of Nickerson SNEAD, as evidenced by the above documents. Moses might have been a s/o Henry ASBURY of Tazewell Co. VA and, it is speculated, perhaps a brother of the husband of Nancy SNEED m. (blank) ASBURY

10. Jane SNEAD , b. c1816 or 1814, WCV (per 1850c, Lee Co. VA, but, more likely, RCV); m. c1832, prob. in RCV, Thomas GARRETT, b. 1780. Thomas H. GARRETT, in a report of Linda Lewis on GenForum, was born in 1814 (age 36 by 1850 – see further info.) and married Jane (surname not given). This Thomas GARRETT is said to be the brother of Aaron H. GARRETT, b. 1801, RCV, who married Mary CROMWELL, children of Williams Evans GARRETT, b. 1768; d. 1856 & Elizabeth HENDRICKS, b. 1774; d. 1833, d/o Thomas & Sarah HENDRICKS. Research of Ms. Dorcas M. Hobbs, however, states Thomas GARRETT to have been born c1770-80, residing in Lee Co. VA and died about Dec 1852. In the latter research, his children are given as: Silas, George W., William, James, Francis, John, Nancy and Jane.

This family is living in Lee Co. VA in 1850c, HH704: GARRETT, Thomas, 70; Jane, 33; James, 17; John, 8; Nancy, 7; Benjamin, 3. This might have been a second marriage for Thomas GARRETT as HH702 is: GARRETT, Silas, 47; Pheba, 47 and 11 children and also 3 more GARRETT families nearby.

1860c, Lee Co. VA, Western Dist., p. 785, HH741: GARRETT, Jane, 46 (b. c1814), WCV; John, 19, WCV; Nancy, 17, WCV; Benjamin, 13, Lee Co.; next to this HH is HH740: GARRETT, Wm., 38; Elizabeth, 38; Morisson, 14; Pacience, 13; Walter, 9; Charles, 6. Jane has not been located in 1870c, Lee Co., VA; however, 1870c, Lee Co. HH66 lists: GARRETT, Elizabeth, 48; Patience, 22 and Charles B., 16, all b. Lee Co.

Tracing this family in Lee Co. VA has not met with much success so far. A James GARRETT, 28y old, died 29 Nov 1858 at Glades, s/o Thomas & Polly GARRETT. Could this be the subject Thomas GARRETT and Polly be Mary Elizabeth SNEAD?

Jane SNEAD GARRETT was still living in Lee Co. VA 1877-1885 during the estate settlement. Her husband died before Nickerson SNEAD (i.e., before 1869). This family needs considerable further research.

(blank) & Jas. DINSMORE as published in The Democrat, 16 Feb 1856, Abingdon. John was b. c1833 (see 1850c, when living with Bolling & Ann.)

For the rest of the story, i.e., jail break story of John SNEAD, see Ancestors and Descendants of Benjamin Snead & Felicia Oliver. I only assume that this unfortunate John SNEAD was the John SNEAD, age 17, 1850c, WCV. The disposition of the case and eventual whereabouts have not been determined, but there seems to have been a rather massive exodus from WCV of the Bolling SNEAD family before the 1860c.

I will also point out that William SNEAD, b. c1790 and the first SNEAD listed in the PPTLs of Russell Co. VA, is also NOT listed as a s/o Benjamin & Felicia and if this is true, he and Bolling SNEAD, above are both surely Benjamin’s nephews and perhaps s/o of either Bolling SNEAD or Micajah SNEAD, brothers of Benjamin.
