"SNAPSHOTS" FEATURE OF "ORACLE VM VIRTUALBOX"
SUMMARY:
"Snapshots" is a feature of "Oracle VM VirtualBox" that allows you to save and then revert back to the exact state of a virtual machine. At any point in time for any virtual machine, you can take a "snapshot". Then, at a future point in time, you can restore/recover the virtual machine back to it's exact status with all files and folders put back to the exact way that they where.
BASIC EXPLANATION
The "snapshot" feature of "Oracle VM VirtualBox" is one way that you can protect yourself from viruses/malware:If you catch viruses or malware, you can delete the "differencing disk" and use the "Parent Disk" to create a new, uninfected virtual machine.
STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE FOR CREATING A "SNAPSHOT"
The "snapshot" feature of "Oracle VM VirtualBox" is available for any virtual machine at any point in time that the virtual machine is running it's guest operating system:

RESTORING A VIRTUAL MACHINE WITH A SNAPSHOT
Shut down the virtual machine if it is currently running.Make sure that the virtual machine is highlighted in the left pane:
