About a year ago, I bought a Huaweicellphone. A very innocent decisionbased mainly on the fact that for a modestsum I could buy a cellphone with asophisticated camera. I am very satisfiedwith it and have no regrets. Now,presuming that you do at least listen to thenews occasionally, you will have heardlots about Huawei. The key thing, if youalready have one of their cellphones, isthat existing users will be largelyunaffected.

It is possible, in my opinion, that storesmay stop selling Huawei if the presentstandoff continues, because of theproblems that may occur for any newusers.

We have been very pleased with theresponse to our appeal for more helpers. Most of these “new” people will behelping out in the office and are presentlyundergoing training. So, I am confidentthat if you, our readers, need to ring or callinto the office with a query or whatever,

that you will be patient particularly duringthis phase.

The Committee has decided that we willbe ceasing the regular “Meet n’ Greet”Monday morning sessions. The demandfor this way of doing things has largelydisappeared. However, should you needadvice about which particularworkshops/courses suit your needs, thenplease do let us know and we will arrangea one-to-one chat.

Recently there was a national meeting ofSeniorNet groups. Total numbersthroughout the country are in slightdecline, whilst our numbers here atGlenfield are holding steady. We currentlyhave 244 financial members, whilst afurther 33 have yet to decide whether tocontinue. Subjectively, the number of newmembers seem to stem appreciably fromour outreach to the Retirement Villages, with residents who have attended theredeciding to come to the centre foradditional learning. They will be undergoing training in the next few weeks and then assisting the oldhands in the office on a regular basis. We are most grateful that they are willing to give their time to keep SNG runningand looking professional.

Situation Vacant – Treasurer: Soon we will be looking for a new Treasurer tostart after the Annual Meeting. We currently use Excel for our accounting, but willbe using Reckon Accounts from the beginning of the new financial year in August.Reckon has been chosen because it is easy and logical to use, and there is supportavailable within SeniorNet. It would be advantageous for an incoming Treasurer toreceive familiarisation/training on Reckon before we start using it. Those interestedin helping as Treasurer should contact Jim Air (418 1378 or [email protected]).

From the Tuition Manager.

A couple of months ago I wrote about the new version of the Snipping Tool. I then foundout that not everyone had the version of Windows with this option. Perhaps by now this haschanged, and if you use the Snipping tool you find a note added to the pop up warning youof the change. You can still use the snipping tool as before, but you might like toexperiment with the new model.Click on Start, and in the column of Apps, check to see if you have Snip and Sketch. Aclick on this opens a part page with a tool barof pens and brushes. On the left of the tool bar, acoloured tab reads New; a click on this shades thescreen, and the mouse pointer becomes a snipping tool. When you have the snip, the tools can be used to decoratethe snip if appropriate.

The keyboard short cut Start + Shift + S – shades the screen and offers the various snippingtools at the top of the screen. When the snip is complete a small pop-up appears on the rightof the screen, and if you are quick, and I mean quick, and click on this pop-up the snip willopen in the tools window – which includes the sharing tool.

If you are using an email client app. such as MS Mail or Outlook, the Sharing tool willlink to that app. If you are using Gmail on line, this cannot work. And we have a course that explains the “complexities” of webmail versus email.July Schedule. The July schedule includes three courses that are extensions to theintroductions in Save Holiday Memories programme running in June – Picasa, Cameras andSpreadsheets. Along similar lines, a desk top publisher programme is offered. This is theway to go for newsletters, brochures, cards, business cards… where the balancing of textand images is important. We can supply the application.

There is a course dealing with Android Tablet computers (i.e. not the iPad). If you are happywith your tablet, how about joining the class to share your tricks? A separate workshop canalso be organised for an informal sharing time as we do on occasions with iPad users.

Genealogy starts again with level 1, but starts a week into the month. The level 1programme is in two parts, over two months, and then the application we use, Legacy, iscovered in the third month.

To give you some mental exercise, the Fun Brain Activities Group meet Friday Morning.

I hope to see you at the Mayfield CentreDoug Turner

Michael McMahon joined SeniorNet Glenfield in 2007 and for the next 10 years hewas a tutor who made a significant impact on the Centre. His classes were wellattended and in my time he covered perhaps the most important topic within ourschedule – keeping computers organised.

Frances and I attended the Vigil held for Michael McMahon two weeks ago.• Wetook along a copy of the International Weekly Guardian; when Michael had a class,he would inevitably turn up a least 30 minutes before time, and “meditate” over theGuardian. The copy was put on his casket in the chapel and the celebrant explainedits appearance to the congregation.

I was aware that Michael had been in Masterton close to the time I was there, buthad no idea that he was the Principal of two schools there, one involving the settingup of a new co-ed school.• We learned of his time in Tonga and there were 4 menfrom the Tongan community at the Vigil, in their Sunday best. There is a collectionof his Tongan shells in the Auckland Museum. He spent time in Afghanistan and thetale was told of his visiting a college in Southland causing a stir by wearing hisAfghan rig.

A man well met, and highly regarded. Farewell.Doug Turner

15th July 2 pm Why choose a Retirement Village?John Collyns is the Executive Director or the Retirement VillagesAssociation of NZ. RVA• represents the entire spectrum ofretirement villages in NZ, so the Association doesn’t promote anyvillage over another, other than describing the benefits ofchoosing an RVA member village. As a result, the presentation is“brand neutral” but will provide you with good reasons toconsider this option of lifestyle. We would like you to invite others to this presentation as Johnis travelling up from Wellington and we wish to make the most of his time.
