Product Brief

Unmatched Flexibility and Cost-EfficiencyFixed line and mobile network operators face the same daunting tasks: finding a cost-effective way to maintain support for existing circuit-oriented services while adding packet-based Layer 2 and IP services, and simultaneously satisfy cost containment and network migration initiatives. The SN 9000 Intelligent Multiservice Switch is designed to address these dichotomies – and meet the most stringent requirements for network availability. Combining an open, IP-centric control plane with a carrier-class, pay-as-you-grow system design provides the flexibility, scalability, and reliability needed to efficiently address today’s service challenges and ease network migration.

Versatile Architecture The compact SN 9000 chassis accommodates both optical/electrical and all-optical configurations, with front access to all cards and connections. The optical/electrical OSX chassis supports up to 1152 DS1, 1008 E1, or 384 DS3 ports, yet occupies only half of a standard rack; the all-optical configuration allows three units per rack. The OSX includes 2 slots for common system functions (system control and cross-connect) and 32 universal slots for service interface and service processor modules. System control, high-order switching, and timing are consolidated on a single system card, the SCX-320, which permits in-service upgrades to software and firmware. Full redundancy is available for all common system functions, including both high and low-order cross-connect switching.

Pay-as-You-Grow Capacity Varying degrees of modularity and in-service scalability are typical of next-generation networking products. However, in several important ways, the most recent addition to the Sycamore switching portfolio moves the pay-as-you-grow concept to an entirely new level. First, the SN 9000 implements capacity-based bandwidth licensing, in 80 Gbps, 160 Gbps, and 320 Gbps quantities. Each service module is allocated a portion of the licensed bandwidth (e.g., 5 Gbps per 8 x OC-3:12/STM-1:4 module, 10 Gbps per VXC-10). System software restricts the amount of usable high-order switching capacity, which means it can be upgraded in-service (from 80 to 160 Gbps, 80 to 320 Gbps, or 160 to 320 Gbps) as the network grows. The SN 9000 alarms network operators when capacity is running low; adding bandwidth is accomplished quickly and non-disruptively by obtaining a new license key from Sycamore customer service. Incremental bandwidth licensing, an industry first, can substantially reduce initial deployment costs.

The second aspect of the SN 9000 pay-as-you-grow approach that differs from industry norms concerns configuration flexibility. Users are not burdened with a full mix of TDM/packet/cell services hard wired into the platform. The SN 9000 base function is strictly non-blocking

TDM switching. Network operators have the option to add advanced data services capabilities, and the option to add VT/VC (low order) switching capabilities. With the SN 9000, to an unprecedented degree, you plug in exactly the service options you need, when and where you need them – in most cases, simply and easily, via software.

Port-Agnostic Services Multiservice networks tend to increase operational complexity because most installed network elements utilize service-specific interface cards. Trying to address a broad spectrum of services while working within this limitation leads to large capital investments and cumbersome operations. In contrast, Sycamore’s any-service-to-any-service-interface approach removes costs and inefficiencies.

The SN 9000 is architected to support 32 universal service slots for service interface modules (SIMs) and optional service processor modules (SPMs). Any SIM interface or SPM can operate in any universal service slot, which allows tremendous provisioning flexibility. Service modules, optical/electrical distribution modules, and pluggable optical modules can be changed and reconfigured as needed; and all interfaces and services are based on industry standards for maximum interoperability.

2

An interface module can be configured with any service, on a per-

port basis, by simply determining the interfaces and processing

capacity required to support the demand on the network. This

enables operators to continually optimize node configurations to

satisfy evolving service requirements; eliminates stranded ports of

any particular service type, simplifies maintenance, and alleviates

sparing issues. The ability to modify services without physically

changing end port connections also simplifies service upgrades

and streamlines operations.

Bandwidth Optimization, Edge to CoreThe SN 9000’s modular, pay-as-you-grow architecture supports a flexible mix of services, including carrier-class Ethernet, high and low-order SONET/SDH private line, and multiservice international gateway functions. Distributed, tiered grooming – from low-order switching of SONET/SDH and PDH services, to high-density aggregation of circuit and packet traffic – enhances overall network efficiency.

Interoperability between the SN 9000 and the SN 16000 Intelligent Optical Switch at the network core extends bandwidth optimization across multiple network segments and service layers, in any topology.

Page 3: SN 9000 Intelligent Multiservice Switch - AMiner · combines ADM and DCS functions with Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH and intelligent optical switching in a single, compact chassis

SONET/SDH Grooming and Switching The SN 9000 provides both high-order and low-order SONET/SDH switching in a fully non-blocking switch fabric. High-order switching scales up to 320 Gbps aggregate capacity for SONET/SDH concatenated and non-concatenated services, with STS-1/AU-3 granularity. Low-order switching scales up to 10 Gbps in an adjunct VT/VC cross-connect matrix that supports up to 4 independent processing islands. Low-order switching also enables SONET and SDH framing and a SONET/SDH international gateway function (i.e., interoperation between the standards within a single platform).

Common SONET/SDH features include per-port, software-configurable support for the SONET or SDH hierarchy, full performance monitoring capabilities, and in-band management channels. Common PDH features include software-configurable mapping selection (STS-1/AU-3 and AU-4) and full performance monitoring.

Packet-Optimized, Intelligent Ethernet Transport The SN 9000 incorporates intelligent Ethernet transport capabilities – ranging from 10 Mbps to 10 GigE – that empower cost-effective network evolution while simplifying multiservice provisioning and ensuring carrier-class availability. The exceptional interoperability and configuration flexibility built into the SN 9000, enhanced by a packet-optimized Multirate Ethernet Card, lower upfront and recurring costs by minimizing sparing and simplifying maintenance and training.

The Multirate Ethernet Card for the SN 9000 enables carrier-class 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Private Line services, as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum, by providing a point-to-point Ethernet connection between a pair of dedicated User Network Interfaces (UNIs) with a high degree of transparency.

On a single card, this solution provides Ethernet transport for optical and electrical services at multiple line rates and enables carrier-class Ethernet services with SONET/SDH reliability.

The 8-port multirate Ethernet service interface module (SIM) occupies a single slot and can be placed in any of the SN 9000’s 32 universal card slots. The card uses small form-factor pluggables (SFPs) to support 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet services for both optical and electrical configurations. Each port can be provisioned for a different type of Ethernet service, depending on the attributes of the chosen SFP. Network operators select interfaces from a variety of pluggable modules to meet the specific requirements of each site. Support for Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), and high and low-order Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) reflects Sycamore’s commitment to standards-based interoperability and further enhances SN 9000 circuit/packet versatility and scalability. Comprehensive Ethernet and SONET/SDH performance monitoring statistics help ensure compliance with service level agreements (SLAs).

figure 2: compact and Versatile Multiservice ArchitectureBy encompassing optical/electrical and all-optical configurations, high and low-order cross-connect, pluggable optics, and port-agnostic circuit/packet services, the SN 9000 enables multiservice aggregation, bandwidth optimization, and new operational efficiencies.
