Out and AboutOut and AboutOut and AboutOut and About

A quieter month for those out and about, thanks to the weather, but a dedicated (or crazy!!) few still managed to squeeze in an event or two. A big well done to Emma Lonie for her fantastic efforts again in the BEDS Series. Emma placed 5th and 6th in Round 4, and 1st in Round 5 of the BEDS Series in Grade 3. Emma competed at Little River Horse Trials as well and finished with a very impressive 2nd place in Grade 3. Congratulations Emma. A huge congratulations to Briony Deeker-Fradd placing 1st in PC Grade 5 at the Maldon Horse Trials. Briony rode a beautiful dressage test, a sensational show jumping round and had a great time over an interesting and challenging cross country course. Really well ridden Briony - you and Maisy were awesome! Also, well done to Georgie and Bronte Simpson who also competed at Maldon Horse Trials - Georgie in PC Grade 4 and Bronte in Open Grade 5. Both girls rode great dressage tests and super showjumping rounds, and came away from a very challenging cross country course still smiling! If you are out and about at any event please let us know so we can make mention of it in the newsletter

Our Gymkhana is coming up on Saturday 23rd October this year and we are in need

of volunteers to help make this day a success, We will need people to make food for judges, stewards for rings, people on the gates, people to man the desk, clean up poo, pack up, set up, canteen helpers and first aiders, just to name a few. We will have a list at the sign in desk for people to write their name next to a job. This is a fantastic day and lots of fun, so let’s work together to make a fun and successful day!

cleared by our first aid people.

Orange, Purple, Green, Red and Blue Groups

Allan Mitchell Show jumping lessons

at the September rally Alan Mitchell is with us for the September rally, we have allocated Alan to Orange, Purple, Green, Red and Blue groups. Could the riders (or parents) in those groups please pay the $10 extra fee for Alan's lesson as it helps in being able to afford an instructor of this kind. We get to have Alan around 3 or 4 times a year, so the groups that miss out this time will have him at his next visit.

SPC Horse Trials

Don’t forget your entries for our Smythesdale Pony Club on Sunday 21st

November and we hope our members will

support their club and ride on the day. Those not competing in our event, we can

find lots of jobs for you to do. There is a lot

of work to do to run a Horse Trial event and we need everyone to be doing something to assist.

We realise that with riders competing it is

hard to also work but we need everyone’s help to make the day run as smooth as possible. An hour here and there gives those

that are on all day a breather and saves

Page 4: SMYTHESDALE & DISTRICTSMYTHESDALE & DISTRICT PONY …€¦ · October 2010 64h – Newsletter items deadline ... available at Supercheap Auto in Wendouree for about $30....they were

complete burn out of energy...and committee... The Horse Trials is one of our major

fundraisers for the club so whether you

can help with canteen, cook food for judges, set up the day before, be a jump judge, a runner, a gopher or are even non horsie we

need all the help we can get and have just

the job for you! It would be greatly appreciated if you could

please chat with committee and offer your

services.

Protect your

float from

thieves

Thanks to Bob Anderson for this article and photos

Above: Horse Float/Trailer tow ball locks to protect

your float

In light of the recent theft of a couple of floats locally

I was prompted me to mention “trailer locks”

available at Supercheap Auto in Wendouree for

about $30....they were in their latest catalogue.

They lock onto the tow hitch so that the trailer (boat

/ float / tandem / caravan) cannot be hitched to a

towing vehicle unless the thieves come VERY well

prepared. They can also be locked over the hitch

while it is attached to your vehicle so the trailer can’t

be removed. I bought decent “Lockwood” padlocks

(about 30mm) from Bunnings to replace the

padlocks that came with the original units. (The

originals were a bit dodgy)Next Rally Day I’ll send the

unit down with Deb (Callister) if anyone wants to

have a look at it. Since all one needs is a ute to back

up and steal your float / boat / caravan I thought it

was a pretty cheap investment.

Old chaff and horse feed bags are

required to hand out for ‘horse poo’ collection at our

upcoming events. Please bring along some bags if

you can to our rally.

All horse yards and tie up areas near floats in

particular have to have all manure, waste hay and

rubbish removed as part of a condition of using our

centre. This is one way that we all contribute to

cleaning up the manure and it is not left to the last

one leaving the grounds etc. Thank you in advance

for your assistance and guidance to other users.

This will help contribute to making our events less

work and more successful. Membership Fees

There are a number of families that have not paid any membership fees other than the PCAV insurance. To be fair on the club could these families please pay some or all of their fees at this rally. To the families who have paid their fees or are making the effort to pay off their fees we are extremely appreciative as it allows us to continue running the rallies as normal and as all our children would like. Without membership fees eventually we cannot run rallies once the money runs out. Thank-you Pony Club Committee

Working with Children Checks

The Working with Children (WWC) Check creates a mandatory minimum checking standard across Victoria. The WWC Check helps to keep children safe by preventing those who pose a risk to the safety of children from working with them, in either paid or volunteer work. If you work or volunteer with children you

may need to apply for a WWC Check.

The WWC Check is being phased in over five years. If you need a WWC Check, you must apply by the due date for your field of child-related work. The next due date was 30 June

2010.

Need to Apply - Clubs, associations or

movements of a recreational or sporting nature in connection with all remaining sport and recreation groups not previously phased-in that

• provide services or conduct activities for, or directed at, children, or • whose membership is mainly comprised of

children

I would appreciate to receive a good quality

Training on the WYEC Grounds –

Did you know you can access the centre without paying casual users fees and with PCAV insurance cover? You need to be clear that you are training for a special purpose such as you need some extra help with your horse, or you need to work on a certain discipline or training for a ODE, a games event or event of some kind. The training needs to be with our permanent instructors Allison Hayes, Sue Bradley, Nick Benyon, or Sue Short. It can be at any time during the week or on weekends. Just make sure you check if any other core users are using the centre at the time. You can use sand, cross country and even our jumps if you are prepared to get them out and pack them up again. WYEC CASUAL USER FEES

At a recent WYEC meeting a motion was put forward to reduce the casual user’s fee for the core user groups of the centre. The WYEC committee, which includes members from Rokewood PC, Adult Riders and Smythesdale PC along with the WYEC management group voted unanimously to reduce the casual user fees for the core groups of the centre. The new User fees for the core user groups (which includes SPC) is as follows which now revolves around families. 12 month casual user – Family $70 6 month casual user – Family $50 1 month casual user – Family $30 Day casual user – same as one month. Guest pass - $10 per rider per day Included in the restructuring is that you may bring a friend to ride (if you have the casual user membership) for $10 per rider per day For further information call Liz Sayers (the booking Officer) on 0408 585 919

President’s bits and pieces

Spring is in the air (so the calendar says but that wet stuff

keeps falling..!). Warmer weather is around the corner and lots of fun riding times ahead! The club committee has been actively and attentively engaged in Pony Club work which carries quite a great deal of responsibility and a certain amount of physical pressure and exertion by one another to enable the club to keep functioning. We all need one another like cogs in a factory as one can’t do it alone but together a lot is being achieved. Worthy of mention is the outstanding work and a big pat on the back to Shane, Roz and Mary – we are so fortunate for all that they do – lots to do in getting in/out the emails, phone calls, paperwork required and keeping the paper trail happening etc. Shane has been putting in a considerable amount of work also including communicating with the Golden Plains Shire for the refurbishment of our clubrooms! So exciting but there is quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes for the benefit of the club and our children. THANKYOU to all our committee and members who are chipping in – well done! For the club to be a success a great deal of effort and commitment goes into the running of such a great club. With most of our committee also working fulltime we really appreciate all the tasks that people willingly take on at rallies etc as without all our volunteers a club just cannot run. Our recent flooded out Horse Trials has been postponed to Sunday 21st November. Note this date and we look forward to your assistance with the

Page 7: SMYTHESDALE & DISTRICTSMYTHESDALE & DISTRICT PONY …€¦ · October 2010 64h – Newsletter items deadline ... available at Supercheap Auto in Wendouree for about $30....they were

smooth running of our up and coming events, in much better weather. Our next Pony Club major event is our Fair Go Fun Day Gymkhana and Novelties horse competition day on Saturday 23

rd October 2010.

Hope to see you there competing and helping out where you can.

Other news: I have recently put in application to The Courier & Haymes Paint for the club to see if we can win 75 litres of paint to celebrate 75 years of Haymes paint. We will have to wait till after Fri 10 September to find out if we are successful.

The club was however successful in obtaining a grant approval from the Golden Plains Shire for funding for poles to the value of $935. We will plan a working bee when the weather is much better to paint the poles – date to be advised. I have also sent in a submission to Department of Planning and Community Development as they had a grant available for Sporting uniform – came with certain criteria and ended up applying for micro fleece hats with SPC logo.

Over 900 applicants were received and generally 500 would be ‘winners’ but we won’t find out till end of October. There are often quite a few grants out there available for ‘free’ funding – have certain criteria and rules etc but if you don’t know or don’t put in an application you will never know!

Be on the ‘lookout’ for any grants that you feel the club would be eligible for and let us know.

Stay warm, dry and don’t forget to be looking after your four legged friends especially during the recent bout of ordinary weather.

Sunday 19th

September is our next rally day – hope to see you there.

Sandra Morgan

Hope you have all found a bit of high ground for your 4 legged friends after the weather we have had over the past few weeks, hopefully the weather has now turned a little towards what we expect in Spring. I would very much like to thank all our riding members, parents and instructors who attended the August rally for everyone’s flexibility throughout the day which really did enable us to have a great rally. Even though we were restricted to basically the large sand arena I think we all got a great deal out of the

day and plenty of fun and laughs were had along the way. After the rain we have had we may again be forced to use only the top part of the grounds, hopefully with a decent week before the rally we might be able to venture further out. We are not going too bad, as some local pony clubs have cancelled both their August and September rallies and we managed to still sneak an August rally in. September’s rally is “Riders choice rally” and where we can we will be giving all the groups what they have asked for on the day. Most groups have asked for cross country in their day, unfortunately at this point the cross country is still closed for everyone’s protection. If we can get out there at any time next Sunday we will, but it would only be on the far side and up high where it hasn’t been flooded. Only if it is dry and safe will it be contemplated. Over the past few weekends there have been a few members who have still got out and about to event with more great results for our club. Briony Deeker-Fradd came 1

st at the Maldon Horse Trials in grade 5

with a lot of older grade 5 kids in her group and quite a difficult x-country course, so a great job. We are coming up to our two major events in the next couple of months, both of which give our club the money to continue providing great instructors and facilities. Please get behind these two events and give your time to help out to ensure it all flows well on the day. The Gymkhana and Novelties on Saturday 23

rd October and our Horse Trials on

Sunday 21st

November are both brilliant days put on for our kids and many local and not so local riders. Please get involved for the well being of your child’s club. With all the recent rain and then the sunshine starting to come through there will be plenty of sugar coming through in the grass this next couple of months, so you need to be aware your ponies and horses will be a bit livelier than normal so please take this into account when riding and heading to pony club. Top this off with the fact there has not been much opportunity to ride over the past month all ponies and horses will be fresh and more than likely not as fit as normal either. Please look after them over the coming weeks as they all start coming back into heavier work and plan out building their fitness back up so as to protect your best friends. A very big thank-you to Sue Short and Cathy Deeker who have taken on the role of coordinating the Gymkhana and for Julie Lodge who is coordinating the Novelties event on the same day, both on Saturday 23

rd of September. Teresa Holmes and

Lynda McDonald are also helping guide these ladies run the events. Please, please help these guy’s out wherever you can. If we all help, these people generally come back for another go which is what we all want I’m sure. Sandra Morgan has done an amazing job gathering photos and placing them on the walls at pony club,

Page 8: SMYTHESDALE & DISTRICTSMYTHESDALE & DISTRICT PONY …€¦ · October 2010 64h – Newsletter items deadline ... available at Supercheap Auto in Wendouree for about $30....they were

please get behind this effort and bring your photos along and have them put up on the wall. The clubrooms look fantastic with all the photos of our kids with their horses, well done Sandra. To everyone who has been in hospital or had injuries over the last month, and there have been a few, we all hope you are now feeling better and hope to see you at the rally next weekend. To the Phillips and Drendel families, we are all thinking of you at pony club after the recent passing of your dad and grandfather. Again, thank-you to everyone who is helping out around the club at the moment. It is greatly appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you. Thank-you all and see you next weekend at the rally. Cheers from Shane
