*Exclusions— Those students who may be removed (deleted) from a cohort (or subcohort). For the Graduation Rates and Fall Enrollment retention rate reporting, students may be removed from a cohort if they left the institution for one of the following reasons: death or total and permanent disability; service in the armed forces (including those called to active duty); service with a foreign aid service of the federal government, such as the Peace Corps; or service on official church missions.
**Do not track transfer out rates.***Fall 2004 was the last term Samuel Merritt University accepted first-time freshmen students.

Endowment Spending Policy Under the University’s endowment spending policy, between 4% to 6% of the quarterly rolling average market value of assets in the endowed fund(s), based on at least 12 and at most 20 quarters of data, may be appropriated. Amounts appropriated for spending may exceed actual realized earnings from endowments.
Definition of Endowment Fund Any contribution where the donor has specifically directed the institution that the amount is to be invested in perpetuity. This information is always contained in a donor’s agreement that directs the institution in the purpose and required treatment of the funds.
Definition of Quasi-Endowment Fund Currently the institution only has one quasi-endowment fund. The contribution for the fund was given to the institution with no donor-specified restrictions. The University’s Board of Regents directed that these funds were to be set aside with Board restrictions. These Board-imposed restrictions are what defines this as a quasi-endowment.
