SMPTE – Transition Challenges
Professional Development AcademyEnabling Global Education
SMPTE - Transition Challenges
• D-Cinema SMPTE standards first published in 2006, some still under development
• SMPTE does not manage standards implementation with manufacturers or rollout initiatives.
• No official SMPTE DCP test material available yet.Fully reliant to date on ISDCF, EDCF, JDCF, locally mastered test content
• Interop and SMPTE DCPs cannot coexist in a directory on a storage volume and must be mastered, QC’d and distributed separately as dual inventory -doubling the workload and complexity
• Most vendors have provided resources to support the transition free of charge, however this is not the case universally.

Professional Development AcademyEnabling Global Education
SMPTE - Transition Challenges (Cont)
• Mastering, TMS, Server, Projector, Processors must all be able to support SMPTE DCPs without issues
• Incompatibilities with legacy theatrical equipment or software versions especially in larger territories where numerous integration efforts have taken place
• Lack of awareness and understanding from exhibitors of SMPTE and potential technical challenges
• Lack of perceived benefits for exhibitors of newSMPTE feature set
• Exhibitors may have to invest in new equipment to manage and exhibit SMPTE DCPs (eg Series 2 Projectors) and cover the associated integration rates as many of the original VPF deals are expired
• Lack of detail on exhibitor system versions within TDL
Professional Development AcademyEnabling Global Education
SMPTE – DTDC Activities
• Set up DTDC SMPTE mastering and distribution working groups across global facilities in 2014
• Ongoing internal end-to-end testing to ensure DTDC systems and processes meet compliance with latest SMPTE Digital Cinema standards
• Key DTDC staff members actively participate in SMPTE and ISDCF meetings in the US and EDCF board meetings in EMEA
• DTDC technical staff have continuous, direct engagement in SMPTE standards development
• DTDC host Plug-fest events to support SMPTE DCP development

ISDCF/EDCF- Testing Activities
• ISDCF and EDCF are working groups established to support the rollout of digital cinema and help the transition
• Groups include representatives from a broad range of active industry partners from around the world
• In the last few years both groups have undergone efforts to create and distribute SMPTE test content
• Test content was unencrypted, included full SMPTE feature set including CPL metadata, markers, timed text subtitles and was mastered in multiple reels.
Professional Development AcademyEnabling Global Education
EDCF SMPTE Working Group
• Netherlands and Norway selected as first two territories to distribute SMPTE test content to exhibitors for feedback
• Both territories 100% digital screens and 100% coverage from single electronic delivery vendor
• GoFilex was the electronic distribution partner for Netherlands and Unique& Film Kino for Norway
• Both partners set up online form to capture exhibitor feedback and translated supporting documentation into local language
• Test content sent electronically to all sites in both territories Dec 2015
