PrayersThis coming week, Anna Swanson and members of her EDGE Core Team together with Deacon Tyler, will be accompanying 21 middle school youth and 9 chaperons for a week at the migrant camps in Skagit Valley. These mission trips are powerful and transforming. Please hold them in prayer that they may be open to all those with whom they encoun-ter in that they may experience the presence of the Holy Spirit in those encounters.I ask your prayers for Deacon Tyler. Next Sunday is his last weekend with us. He will preach at the Westside Masses. He goes back to Rome at the end of August to complete his final year of seminary formation and educa-tion before ordination next June. Deacon Tyler has been a real blessing for us these past weeks. Let us hold him in prayer this coming year. Please pray for the safety of all those who are working on the renovation of the church that they may be kept safe and work diligently for an on-time com-pletion of the renovation.

UnboundFor the next two weekends, Fr. David Noone from the Diocese of Albany, New York will be with us while I am away. Fr. David travels on behalf of “Unbound,” an international program that offers

assistance to in-need young and elderly in 20 countries throughout the world. He is also the founder of “Friends of Fontaine,” a foundation established for the purpose of building and operating a secondary school in Fontaine, a small town located in rural Haiti. Please wel-

come Fr. David warmly to Saint Michael Parish.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary

This Wednesday, August 15 we cele-brate with the Church throughout the world the feast of the assumption of Mary into heaven. We will have two Masses, both at the Westside at noon and at 6pm. This is a holy day of obli-gation and an opportunity to celebrate the role of Mary in the life of the church.

UpdateA week ago Thursday, I had my latest ALS clinic. I continue to do quite well in many areas except for strength in my hands, arms, and upper body. I’ve come to realize ever more deeply that I have little, if any, control over this dis-

ease. It has not progressed as I had thought and I’m grateful. I am beginning to call it “ALS in Slo-Mo.” As I pray, I feel reassured that God is with me and is asking me to continue my ministry and live my priesthood to the full. I sense that God has much more in store for me. I’m not sure what, but I desire to say “yes” with all my heart and soul. So, thank you once again for your continued prayers, love and support.I also ask your prayers for Bishop Joe Tyson, Fr. Gary Zender and myself as we head to Germany

for vacation. We plan on visiting friends as well as biking and visiting many beau-tiful churches along our routes. Please keep Fr. Lou in your prayers during these two weeks that I’m away. You are invited to a special goodbye event for Deacon Tyler after the 11am Mass at the Westside on August 19. It will be a time to express your gratitude for his presence in your prayers for his continued seminary formation. Hope you can make it.In Christ, and through the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, I love you.

THE HEART OF STEWARDSHIPElijah spent a long, hot day traipsing through the desert until he finally came to a sad little broom tree. Sliding deject-edly beneath it, he prayed for death, crying out. “This is enough, O Lord! Take my life.” Talk about a bad day! Haven’t we all been through this at some point in our stewardship journey — whether in the parish ministry work we are trying to do, at home with our family or in our pro-fession? Maybe you’re there right now. You’ve been dragging yourself through the “desert” all day and have nothing to show for it but frustration and mis-understanding; you have nothing left to give and you are just done — enough already, Lord! It’s a cry we all make at one point or another, whether out loud or silently. Elijah certainly doesn’t hold back in his complaint to God — he asks the Lord to end his life entirely! He’s being just a wee bit dramatic, wouldn’t you agree? Yet this plea — melodramatic to be sure — is a form of the stewardship pillar of prayer, for prayer at its core is simply a lifting of the mind and heart to God.And how does the Lord respond to Elijah? With a stern lecture? With a guilt trip to just pull himself up by the sandal straps and keep going? No, he responds with help and comfort that is both tender and practical — He

sends an angel to give Elijah food and drink and lets him extend his nap a little longer. When Elijah’s strength is fully restored, God sets him right back on his journey. Rejuvenated, Elijah is able to walk for 40 days until he arrives at the destination God had in mind for him all along! We see just the opposite happening in the Gospel reading. The people, hearing Jesus’ message, do not understand. But rather than take their complaint to Him, they begin to complain amongst them-selves about Him — that’s murmuring. What can we learn from these reactions as modern-day disciples and Christian stewards? Several things. First, feeling worn out and worn down from time to time is actually part of the stewardship journey. It means we are giving our all to the life God is calling us to live. But it is also a sign to us that we need to find some rest and restoration, so that we can gain new and needed strength to keep going.Second, we learn that “murmuring” is counterproductive. It only leads to more discouragement, weariness and discon-tent. Rather than complain about God, (or our ministry, our relationships, our work) we should take our complaints to God in prayer. We should ask Him for the rest and strength we need to keep going

on the journey of faith. He delights in our reliance on Him. He will send an “angel” in some form or other to give you what you need physically for your own unique stewardship journey.Even more, as we see in today’s Gospel, He will send you His own Son, the Bread from Heaven, to strengthen you spiri-tually with His very Body and Blood and the living Word of the Scriptures. A stewardship way of life takes all the strength we have to give. The beauty of this way of life is that we have a God who delights in giving us every bit of strength we need to live it!

Food Bank/The Other Bank Collection

Around 1 in 8 Washingtonians do not get enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs and 1 in 6 relies on their local food bank.

Every first weekend of the month we take nonperishable food/financial donations for the Thurston County Food Bank. The YWCA Other Bank distributes personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies essential for maintaining health and personal dignity. Donations of money are also much needed. CALLING ALL MIDDLE SCHOOLERS!

Tuesday, August 21 at 7pm, EDGE is continuing its Bible study! Please sign up by emailing Anna Swanson at [email protected] Come have your questions answered and learn how to apply your faith in a fun, relevant way!

A Life Teen event: Register at our website!

"The EDGE program is wonderful. Emma, our oldest, has participated EDGE for the last three years and we are very grateful for all of the people who have been there to support her faith forma-tion. EDGE provides a place to get to know other Catholic middle schoolers who love Jesus and the Church. The weekly commitment of going to the EDGE Nights has been hard, but the benefits are clear: she sees other adults living out their faith, she participates in Mass more freely, and is more committed to her faith. All the little things that EDGE does adds up, like the Summer Bible study and other fun but faith focused get togethers. We are excited for our girls to continue to grow and learnmore about Jesus in EDGE!"Jon and Christy Corcoran

LOGO WEAR Hat, shirt, apron or bag? Place your order! It is so beautiful to go around town and bump into parishioners wearing their Saint Michael Parish hat or shopping at the store with their SMP bag. Whether we already know each other or not, we can recognize each other as members of the same Catholic family! Many parishioners asked about shirts and sweatshirts, so if you wish to pre-order one please let Bene know – the bigger the order the cheaper the price! We are also in the process of reordering hats and bags, so if you wish to place an order, contact Bene at (360) 292-7143 or [email protected].

THE SMALL GROUPS DIFFERENCEAs we look toward our fall schedules, consider giving yourself the gift of joining a Small Group. If you are not in a small group yet, some groups are open to receiving new members at any time. Check out the open groups on our website.
