The samba took shape when a group of young carioca musicians began to combine traditional West African Sumbs. rythms with Portu-guese folk songs popular at the time. It is based on a 3 bij 4 rythm and its intoxica-ting percussionleads people to Samba, grya-ting of the hips, shuffling of the feet and graceful arm movements.

SambäoThis is what the huge percus-sion schools play at carnival. The Mestre de Batera (maes-tro), carries a whistle which he uses with short and long blasts to keep strict time keeping. This slower type of Samba is played all year round with the empha-sis on wit rather than story telling. One of the characters most lovingly sung about is the ma-landro, a charming type of crook.

Its name came about from the nightclub “for all” which was set up by an Englishman. The Caerra accent gave it its present spelling.
