Kids have so many opportunities to make memories at Smith Mountain Lake – whether they grow up here or visit on vacation. Summers spent fishing, tubing or giving wake sports a try are such special times. A day spent learning the basics of

sailing, exploring nearby historic landmarks or hanging out with family and friends at Bridgewater Plaza – the possibilities are endless for kids of all ages. In this issue, we’ve compiled some of our top on-water and off-water adventures in a feature titled “Laker Kids.” It starts on page 35 and includes a multitude of ideas to keep your little ones, tweens and teens occupied all summer long. We’ve even pulled out some of the top kid-friendly events for July and August into a handy calendar (pages 48-49). Of course, what kid (or adult) doesn’t enjoy a cold treat on a hot day? At Smith Mountain Lake, there are numerous eateries that offer a wide variety of frozen treats. We’ve compiled the list in a roundup that starts on page 75. Included is the Ice Cream Boat, an on-water enterprise started by two young brothers that has become a treasured Smith Mountain Lake tradition. Read more about how Ryan and Travis Burke have kept the goodies afloat for 11 seasons in a profile starting on page 50. Peru

AustraliaMae and Doug Overman of Moneta celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April with a 19-day journey to New Zealand and Australia, where they had this photo taken at the Sydney Opera House. Visiting one of Australia’s most-recognized icons “was just one of hundreds of memorable experiences involving friendly residents and beautiful scenes, both natural and manmade, while on the trip,” the Overmans wrote in their email submission.

New ZealandRich and Doreen Faga of Moneta traveled in March to Australia and New Zealand where they visited some of the region’s top attractions, including the Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef and Ayers Rock. The couple posed for this photo at the Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park in Rotorua, New Zealand, with the January/February issue of the Laker, which featured a story on their extensive collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia.

TanzaniaAnn and Peter Coriasco traveled last fall to Kenya and Tanzania where they spent time visiting Masai villagers and attending a class with Masai children at a local primary school. The Moneta couple also enjoyed spotting wildlife during daily game drives in Serengeti National Park, Masai Mara National Reserve and other parks known for lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo, zebra, gazelle and wildebeest.

Florida KeysRoy and MG Enslow of Moneta celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a trip last winter to Florida where they spent a week in the Keys enjoying the scenery and warm weather. The couple posed for this photo in Big Pine Key at the No Name Pub, which dates back to 1931 and was also once a brothel. According to the pub’s website, “the venture failed after several years as the fishermen were reported to be better looking than the ladies.”

Deanna Cebulash and Philip Sheridan of Moneta pose with the Laker in front of Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca site perched on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. The couple also traveled to the highlands of Equador and the Galapagos Islands during their three-week adventure last July. “It was a bucket-list trip,” Sheridan said. “It was just fantastic.”

ItalyRay and Susan Wilson of Wirtz traveled to Rome in January where they stopped for a photo with the Laker in front of the Trevi Fountain. One of the most famous fountains in the world, the structure is made mostly of travertine stone and was completed in 1762. Legend has it that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return trip to Rome.

IrelandTom and Suzanne Monaghan of Huddleston and Sue and Dick Robertson of Moneta posed for a photo with the Laker in front of their thatched-roof cottage in Killarney, Ireland, where they stayed for part of a two-week vacation last September. Suzanne said highlights of the trip included spending a night at Castle Leslie in County Monaghan (where Paul McCartney and Heather Mills were married) and touring the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

MexicoDave and Laura Pope of Moneta enjoyed a week-long vacation last winter to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “We went out chasing whales and enjoyed the warm weather. You know we had to take the Laker Magazine along for the ride,” the couple wrote in their email submission.

FloridaMarilyn and Bruce Doble of Wirtz traveled to Sanibel Island, Fla., earlier this year where they spent time collecting shells and riding bicycles along trails to the island’s beaches and wildlife preserves. Pictured in the background is the Sanibel Island Light, which was first lit in 1884 and is still in operation today.

Yosemite

Moneta residents Sue and Al Busch spent three weeks last September traveling out West to celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary. The couple enjoyed visits to Lake Tahoe, the California coast and wine country, as well as Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. They posed for this photo with the Laker at Yosemite with Half Dome in the background. Located at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley, the crest rises more than 4,737 feet above the valley floor. “It’s just spectacular,” Al said. “The whole park is, but especially Yosemite Valley.”

“I have always loved going on home tours, and the fact that local charities benefit from this event made us eager to participate,” said Terri. “This is also an opportunity to showcase the work of our home’s builder and subcontractors, with whom we were most impressed. Additionally, this gives Bob and me the opportunity to meet some interesting folks in our area.”

Arts and Crafts design, a movement made popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emphasizes traditional craftsmanship and simple forms.

“This is the first house we’ve built together, and we chose the Arts and Crafts style because we both love its simple, rustic and casual features,” said Terri.

On the exterior, reddish-brown accent wood and rough hewn posts that contrast with cream-sage-colored siding announce that this is no ordinary design. From the street side, visitors enter through a door with stained-glass ornamentation and find themselves in a world of Arts and Crafts wonders – beautiful dark wood trim, heart pine floors, simple and stylish furniture and distinctive doors with transoms. To the right of the entry is the masculine study with custom board and batten-style oak paneling and a dramatic coffered ceiling.

The Lake Factor“We spent a great deal of time planning the hardscape and landscape so that it would tie the home into the setting, keeping some of the natural plantings and adding ones that complement the surrounding flora,” Terri said.

Biggest SplurgeThe wine cellar and tasting room. “We have collected and enjoyed wine over the years, but finally have the proper place to store it correctly. Bob enjoys the collecting, cataloging and tasting as a hobby,” Terri said.


The room is home to Bob’s collection of auto-racing memorabilia.

“I would call this my favorite room – very relaxing, masculine and reflecting one of my sports passions,” he said.

The entrance hall leads to the main living area, the heart of the home, with space for relaxing around the stone fireplace, dining and meal preparation in a big kitchen with cherry cabinets, contrasting island, Wolf-brand range and slate backsplash.

“This main living area is a favorite part of the home because it allows everyone in the family to be together,” said Terri. “And the views of the lake are unobstructed.”

The open floor plan and the many lake-facing windows make the space feel bright even though the furniture pieces, many of which are antiques, are mainly constructed of dark wood. The couple also favors furniture from Stickley, a manufacturer

HARMONY AND UNITYThere are many ways to achieve a sense of harmony

and unity in a landscape. Here are a few tips: Grow healthy plants. A garden with plants that are

struggling to survive is an uncomfortable place, one lacking in harmony.

Group plants that have similar needs. It is jarring to see plants that enjoy moisture growing with ones suited to dry conditions, or sun lovers paired with shade seekers.

Harmonize the garden with its surroundings. Keep in mind the larger surroundings as you choose plants and design the garden. Echo an architectural detail from your house in the garden to help create a cohesive whole. Also plan to use materials in the

garden that are consistent with the house. If your house is brick, then brick pathways would enhance the unity of your garden.

Repeat color or planting themes in different parts of the garden to create a sense of unity. Patterns and shapes repeated throughout a garden also provide a pleasing rhythm that unifies.


PROPORTION AND SCALEWe have all had the experience of putting a piece

of furniture, such as a couch, in a small room and noticing that it looks enormous. The same couch in a large room looks quite small. The phenomenon at work is scale. The same object will look larger or smaller, depending on the relative size of its surroundings.

The same principles of scale and proportion apply outside. A common mistake homeowners make in their gardens, especially small ones, is to have too many small features. Instead of making the garden feel bigger, it feels busy and lacks focus. To correct this, plant one tree or massive shrub as an important statement in a small garden, and then use that plant as a reference, relating the scale and proportion of the rest of the plantings and ornaments to it. Also include a vertical element such as a tree, trellis or arbor to distract from the close boundaries of the property.

MASS AND SPACELarge, solid plants, especially if their color is dark,

take up more space in the garden both physically and visually. These plants have mass, and are important to define and fill space as well as to provide resting places for the eye in a landscape busy with lots of floral and other ornamental interest. They are like punctuation marks, providing moments of rest and giving form to the design.

In winter, when all the frills and distractions of summer’s bounty are removed from the garden, you can best judge whether your garden has adequate mass. If your design is well done with enough mass, the garden will be interesting even in this bare state.

The other source of visual rest in a garden is space. An expanse of patio, a change in level, a swath of lawn, reflecting pool or an uninterrupted view of the lake all serve to provide an open, horizontal break in the design.

An ideal design is a pleasing mix of mass and space. If there is too much mass, the garden will appear heavy and dark. If there is too much horizontal space, the garden will feel empty.

TEXTURE, PATTERN AND COLORPatterns in gardens are primarily provided by

the physical layout. Whatever the pattern, whether symmetrical and ordered for a formal garden, or an abstract pattern for an informal design, it will establish the essential character of the garden. On a smaller scale, you can create additional patterns in your garden with bricks or stones laid out in special designs.

Foliage is a good source of texture in a garden. Large-leafed plants are bold in texture, creating a strong, assertive look; small-leafed plants appear

Look beyond flowers to foliage for color in the garden, taking advantage of the incredible range of colors in hues of yellow, red, blue and purple. For added spice, opt for variegated leaves that combine two or more of the possible colors.

By effectively using the basic principles of design, you can create a garden that evokes delightful tensions between restful and stimulating, one that is harmonious without being repetitive and boring. Strive to create a garden that is balanced and unified, and at the same time surprising. Most of all, design your garden so it reflects your own personality.

“I will teach both kids and adults about wake boarding, surfing, skating and skiing. Basically, anything you can do behind a boat, I will teach,” said Bittinger. “Through my Wake Up business, I show customers how to do the sport, give them techniques they can practice at home on land and tips on how to pull a wakeboarder behind your boat.”

Bittinger offers a range of coaching packages, including a one-hour lesson using the customer’s boat ($75), one hour using his Mastercraft wake boat ($150), a half day ($500) or full day for a single or group ($1,000).

QQ SKIING William and Andrew Kettlety enjoy wakeboarding, tubing and fishing while at their home on Smith Mountain Lake, but the 12-year-old twin brothers are crazy about water skiing.

“Our favorite part about water skiing is getting outside on the lake and skiing with our friends,” said Andrew. “We usually go to either Silver Creek cove, the slalom ski courses at Bull Run Creek or Gills Creek.”

The brothers, along with dad Richard, are members of the SML Water Ski Club. Club president Todd Rowland said the group’s youth participants are as young as 5.

“We have a lot of families involved,” Rowland said. “Our events are always open to the public. Interestingly, a lot of vacationers contact us and want to connect with our group while they’re here. They can come and watch at our events or, if they have time to volunteer, we’ll try to accommodate them.”

William Kettlety said kids at Smith Mountain Lake are sure to enjoy trying out the sport of skiing if they’re interested.

“Skiing is fun and good exercise,” he said. “If you’re a beginner, the main thing to remember is to keep trying hard and have fun.”

QQ SAILINGIntroducing a child to the sport of sailing is a win for everyone involved. They will be captivated riding a sailboat through the water as they are challenged by learning how to operate it. Sharing the experience with mom, dad or a sibling can create memories of a lifetime.

Pete Phillip, Blackwater Yacht Racing Association (BYRA) member and owner of the Smith Mountain Lake Sailing School, encourages sailing lessons with a licensed instructor where students will learn about safety, navigation, wind conditions and how to prepare properly for a sailboat excursion.

“You want the experience to be fun and something you’ll want to come back and do again,” said Phillip. “Our school caters to novice sailors.”

QQ PADDLEBOARDINGOne of the more recent water sports to catch on at SML is paddleboarding. The surf-inspired activity allows board riders to coast comfortably over the water, using a long paddle for momentum. They can also practice yoga-like stretching, strength and balance exercises on the board. Luke Hopkins, owner of Stride, a paddleboard manufacturing and sales company that covers Virginia and North Carolina, offers group paddleboarding clinics at Smith Mountain Lake.

Hopkins said children have a natural advantage on a paddleboard.

“Kids have a lower center of gravity and are extremely agile, so right off they’re really good at paddleboarding. It is harder to keep their attention though, so we let them be creative and play around and have fun. It’s an activity that is growing very quickly because parents can go paddleboarding with their young children on the board and children love it,” said Hopkins.

Take a paddle boarding expedition with your family by renting paddle boards from a local marina, purchasing one at Wake Zone Water Sports at Bridgewater Plaza, or participating in a group clinic with Hopkins by calling 540-315-4441.

QQ FISHINGReeling in a big one is the type of water fun some kids dream about. Smith Mountain Lake is a perfect place to enjoy a family fishing trip or a relaxing cast-off from the dock. Local fishing guide Kenny Short, owner of Kenny’s Striper Guide Service, has been helping locals and guests hook stripers at SML since 2002. Short said summer is the time for families to book a trip in hopes of making a memorable catch.

“The kids get excited, the little ones like to play with the bait,” said Short. “I get a lot of repeat families who had so much fun they can’t wait to go back out. It’s an activity that gets kids out on the water and that the whole family can participate in.”

Dale Wilson, who has operated Captain Dale Wilson’s Smith Mountain Lake Guide Service since 1972, said he recommends getting kids started as early as 6 or 7 years old, depending on the individual child’s attention span.

“If you get them started at an early age, fishing is something they can potentially enjoy for the rest of their lives. And having a good first experience can make all the difference,” said Wilson, a former high school teacher. “I like to see kids have fun and learn something.”

And while most professional guides provide the fishing equipment, parents need to bring snacks, sunscreen and a fishing license for each qualifying person. Out-of-state participants 12 years or older are required to have a license. A Virginia resident 16 years or older needs a license, which can be purchased at area marinas, tackle shops and other retail stores. Fees vary. Visit www.dgif.virginia.gov for details.

• Always, even if you are over 13 years of age, wear a lifejacket when using a tube or other towable.

• Make sure you have an observer to watch whoever is on the inflatable and to alert the driver if he or she needs to slow down or stop. The observer should be at least 10 years of age.

• Inflatables should only be used during daylight hours, never in the dark.

• Lastly, whoever is using the inflatable is considered a passenger on the towing vessel. If your boat has a maximum capacity of 12, you can NOT have 12 people on your boat plus someone being pulled on an inflatable. Doing so exceeds your boat’s maximum capacity, which is dangerous and can put all your passengers at risk.

Safety on the water is a vital part of enjoying recreation at Smith Mountain Lake. To help parents and children understand the importance of wearing a properly fitting life jacket while participating in any lake activity, Bridgewater Marina managing partner Roy Enslow and his wife, MG, founded the Life Jackets are Lifesavers program in 2010.

“The program promotes child boating safety by rewarding children who are wearing life jackets,” said Roy Enslow. “We give a lifesaver candy, symbolic of a lifesaver ring, to any child wearing a properly fitting lifejacket.”

Enslow said the program’s message has been expounded by a presence at regional events and media attention.

“For the past three summers, the program has been kicked off at the annual [Southwest Virginia] Boat Show and lasted the entire summer. It has encouraged numerous articles in local publications, reminding parents of the importance of their children wearing life jackets. So far, the program has been extremely effective in promoting boating safety, especially with children,” he said.

Enslow provided a few suggestions for parents in regard to child safety while on the water.

• Make sure each child’s life jacket fits properly and is zipped and clipped.

• Federal law requires that all children under the age of 13 wear a lifejacket while on the water, but you are never too old to wear a one.

• Assign an adult to make sure the size and weight of the lifejacket fits each child correctly and to make sure they are behaving in a safe manner during every boat outing.

• Consider assigning each child a seat on the boat to make it easier to keep track of where they are at all times.

QQ SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE STATE PARKThis 1,248-acre state park, located in Bedford County, offers one of the prime locations for a great view of SML’s mountain and lake beauty. The largest of the two beaches, its 500-foot span can accommodate up to 1,000 people, watched over by trained lifeguards. There’s also volleyball, a playground, picnic pavilion, on-site restrooms and snack vending machines nearby. Swimming fees are $3 on weekdays and $4 on weekends. 540-297-6066, virginiastateparks.gov

QQ SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE COMMUNITY PARK SML Community Park in Franklin County offers a beach spot open daily from June through August, complete with a guarded sandy beach, buoyed swimming area and free admission. Plaza’s outdoor hot spots, The Midway presents a mini-carnival for indoor/outdoor games and prizes. Kim Wills brought daughters Katelyn and Claira and a few friends to the amusement center during a day trip from Roanoke.

“I think Bridgewater Plaza is a great place to come. There are plenty of things for kids to do, and even though there is a bar near The Midway, no one is rowdy and everyone is respectful,” said Wills.

Claira, 5, said her favorite part of The Midway is the bungee trampoline, a sentiment echoed by her sister and their friends. The business also offers a 30-foot rock-climbing wall, basketball toss, ring toss and goblet toss games.

Harbortown Mini Golf includes 18 holes of creative putt-putt challenges elevated 15 feet over the lake. Open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day, the course is one of the plaza’s oldest and most-visited attractions and a great activity for all ages. Cost for a round is $5 for children, $6 for adults.

Fun-N-Games Arcade is a kid’s paradise when it comes to rainy-day destinations. The indoor arcade is full of video games, rides for small children, skee-ball and more. Eight-year-old Anna Larsen couldn’t get enough of the simulated motorcycle course during a Saturday afternoon outing.

“The motorcycles are hard because I’m still too little to ride them well, but they’re my favorite,” she said. “I’ve won prizes at the crocodile game. [The arcade] is kind of like Chuck-E-Cheese, but there are more games.”

Feeding the carp that reside at the docks near Bridgewater Marina is an SML tradition for many families. Kids get a kick out of throwing popcorn and waffle cone to the frenzied fish that are in constant congregation. Visit the marina store for fish-feeding options, or try the Ice Cream Cottage for free pieces of waffle cone after the marina store closes.

Its distinctive tune can be heard up and down Smith Mountain Lake on sunny summer days. The music box piping out classic ice cream truck music lets kids, adults and even dogs know the one-of-a-

kind Ice Cream Boat is on its way.Founded 12 years ago by brothers Travis

and Ryan Burke when they were just 15 and 12 respectively, the pontoon boat loaded with frozen treats is one of SML’s most endearing traditions.

“We have a blast doing it,” said Travis. “I love talking to and meeting new people. And it’s always nice to see some return visitors year after year.”

The Burke brothers first set afloat in 2000, looking for an inventive approach to summertime earnings. Rather than flipping burgers or mowing lawns, the pair decided to sell their parents on a strategic partnership.

“We lived in Roanoke at the time but had a house on the lake,” said Travis. “We thought the lake area could use something like the ice cream truck in Roanoke. That’s how we came up with the idea. Our parents believed in us and were our investors.”

Now, Travis, 27, and Ryan, 24, have successfully completed 11 seasons of selling ice cream while cruising the shores of SML. Ryan said he still recalls the excitement of launching the operation.

“I just remember thinking how much fun it would be to meet people every day. I thought, what better job than to ride around on a boat all day and sell ice cream,” he said. “I couldn’t wait to get out there that first day.”

Over the years, the Burkes have logged an average of 3,500 miles per season, last year totaling 3,800. They put in 10-12 hours each day when they’re out on the lake, making a round trip of about 60 miles. Operating the business also requires hard work before and after driving the daily route.

“We have to restock the freezer, count inventory and get gas,” Ryan said. “There is boat maintenance, and when a motor breaks down, there isn’t [always] a quick solution. Last year, we went through about three different freezers. After we return from a day of selling, we usually spend until midnight or so getting ready for the next day.”

The brothers have kept the enterprise afloat through high school, college and now “real jobs.” Travis works at his father’s Roanoke-based industrial design company and Ryan is a recent graduate of Ferrum College pursuing a job in the field of parks and recreation. So far, both have been able to work around their full-time schedules to devote summers to the Ice Cream Boat. Long-time fans like Carol Gilbert-Daughtrey look forward to its dockside stops each year.

“Travis and Ryan and their parents are so dedicated. My husband, Tom, and I have gotten to become really good friends with them,” Gilbert-Daughtrey said, adding that their black Labrador, Buddie, is particularly crazy about the Ice Cream Boat.

“When they start coming from Hales Ford Bridge, which is 3 miles away, Buddie can hear the music and starts barking. He is a sight to behold. We go down to the dock and wait and wait and wait. Once they get to the dock, they give him a Milkbone treat,” she said.

Travis said “it’s scary” to think how quickly the time has gone by for the young entrepreneurs.

Perhaps the word “castaway” makes you think of roughing it Gilligan’s Island-style on some tiny, uninhabited tropical island. Like the movie’s main character, Laker Joe Stephens began his career with FedEx as a transportation systems engineer. A 1992 graduate of Purdue University, Stephens has now moved up to become Director of Operations in the company’s Mid-Atlantic/Mid-South Region with responsibilities stretching from South Carolina up through Virginia and as far west as the Oklahoma border.

The Stephens were living in Indiana when they purchased “Castaway III” in 2008. They had spent several years contemplating an upgrade from “Castaway II,” a Regal 3260 which, like the 27-footer that was the first in their “Castaway” series, they kept on Lake Monroe near Bloomington. The new boat was soon shipped overland — not as an overnight parcel, but rather as part of a FedEx relocation package — to become berthed at Smith Mountain Lake’s Bayside Marina.

“Castaway III” provides a stark contrast to the meager accommodations Hanks’ movie character endured, offering a stateroom with plush queen-sized bed, an aft cabin that converts into guest quarters with king-sized sleeping accommodations, a bright and airy salon with Italian cherry cabinetry, wood flooring, a head with shower, a gourmet galley and a roomy entertaining deck with wet bar and lounge seating for up to eight.

“We try to spend most weekends aboard during the season,” Joe Stephens said, “accompanied by Gabby [their Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier] and Mattie [a Shih Tzu].

“The dogs love being aboard,” added Kerri, “and have made lots of friends among our marina neighbors along F-dock.”

The Stephens said they enjoy motoring down to the dam to anchor and heading up the Blackwater for margaritas and fajitas at Mexico Viejo at Crazy Horse Marina.

“We’re looking forward to trying out the new restaurants that have opened this year, too,” Joe said.

And should the Stephens ever run short of companions with whom to discuss the delights of being boat owners at SML, they always have a last resort.

“Yep,” Joe said. “There’s a volleyball on board we call ‘Wilson.’”

"Smith Mountain Lake is nationally known as being an idyllic location for a retirement or second home,” said Christopher Finley, Director of Marketing for The Willard Companies

and Prudential Water-front Properties, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “Many of the communities here at the lake offer maintenance-free living, which allows the homeowners to take full advantage of the numerous recreational activities the lake has to offer. It also lends peace of mind to non-residents that their home is being taken care of while they are not here.”

Though the maintenance-free trend has been around for some time, local real estate experts such as Mary Lou McDonald, owner of ML Realty in Moneta who also represents Mariners Landing Resort Com-munity, expect it to continue to rise in popularity.

“Even buyers in their 20s and 30s want maintenance-free," McDonald said. "It isn’t just for the older crowd anymore. People say, ‘I’m living at the lake and I want to enjoy myself, not work on my property.’”

Prudential Waterfront Properties realtor Vicki Millehan said maintenance-free benefits such as lawn care, exterior building maintenance and community recreational facilities provide homeowners with hassle-free living.

“Buyers can enjoy the lake, their favorite pastimes, then lock up and go,” said Millehan. “I think some of the favorite amenities are a clubhouse with a beautiful pool and hot tub, tennis, basketball, exercise facility and picnic shelter. Other perks are jogging

and walking trails surrounding the community. It’s instant gratification.”

Wayne Burris experiences both sides of the maintenance-free trend at SML. As an area realtor with RE/MAX Lakefront Realty, he sees the demand for those types of communities. And as a resident at Bernard’s Landing, he enjoys the benefits on a daily basis. Burris said the progression of maintenance-free includes more attention for those who reside within the neighborhood year-round.

“Maintenance-free amenities have generally been geared toward those that come temporarily for the summertime season like vacationers and second-home owners,” he said. “I’ve noticed more happening for those of us that live here 12 months out of the year. For example, at Bernard’s, we now have an indoor pool and new fitness center, both of which are used all year long. There is a leaning toward year-round amenities for all age groups.”

SWEET FROG The frozen yogurt franchise is the latest business to join the lake’s sweet treats scene. Owners Matt and June Smith opened the shop in March at Westlake Towne Center after success with several other Sweet Frogs in Lynchburg. Customers can fill their cup with one or more frozen yogurt flavors and embellish it from an extensive buffet of toppings, paying based on weight.

HOMESTEAD CREAMERY

In recent years, Homestead Creamery has made a name for itself in several East Coast states. SML locals and visitors are lucky to have the headquarters right in their own backyard. Visit the retail store in nearby Burnt Chimney to take your pick of one of the dairy enterprise’s distinctive flavors. “Our ice cream is made on site, right next door, so it’s fresh, homemade ice cream,” said co-owner Donnie Montgomery.

This eatery transports customers to a time of sipping soda at the counter before taking in a movie on the outdoor screen. The retro-style restaurant features the best of a traditional ice cream parlor, complete with a massive banana split piled close to 7 inches high.
