CEN CENELEC Work Programme 2015 published

In this first SME Newsletter of 2015, we are pleased to inform you that the CEN and CENELEC Work Programme 2015 has been published.

The CEN and CENELEC Work Programme 2015 provides an overview of our most important standardization activities that will be developed this year. It covers all of the different fields and sectors that CEN and CENELEC are dealing with, and

includes information about other activities related to international cooperation, SME participation, societal stakeholders' involvement, education about standardization, etc. Those standardization activities respond to market needs, and in particular to the demands of European industry. They also correspond to the European Union’s annual work programme for European standardization for 2015, which was published by the Commission last summer.

As we hope that the Work Programme will help our community and other interested stakeholders be actively involved in European standardization activities, this year’s edition includes specific details about the relevant Technical Bodies and the number of standards and other deliverables that have been published by CEN and/or CENELEC. It also highlights how many standardization requests (Mandates) from the European Commission have been accepted by CEN and/or CENELEC, and identifies the most relevant corresponding elements of the EU Work Programme for European standardization 2015.

CEN response to the Green Paper on safety of tourism accommodation services

CEN replied to the European Commission's consultation related to tourism accommodation safety. At national and European level there are standards related to the safety products, which support existing legislation and are relevant in relation to the safety of tourism accommodation. In the area of services, there are also national standards and other documents relevant to some safety aspects of services offered within tourism accommodation and also to accessibility of tourism and leisure facilities. Nevertheless, the area of tourism accommodation is regulated at national level in different Member States and there seem to be important differences between the existing national legislations. Without a certain level of harmonization of legislation at European level, reaching a consensus and developing a European standard in such context may be difficult.

Moreover, it should be born in mind that standardization is a market-driven process and that the development of standards in this field would require the support of both the consumer representatives and of the tourism accommodation sector.

Data content: All Harmonized standards (cited or intended

for citation in OJEU) issued by CEN-

CENELEC (excluding Corrigenda) during the

current year, broken down by Directive.

CEN invites the European Commission to consider a role for European standardization within the context of future EU action on safety of tourism accommodation. Nevertheless, as mentioned above, it should be highlighted that for the development of (European) standards, the support of the relevant stakeholders is essential.
