In the future, new technology will better equip power grids for the demands of tomorrow. The design of photovoltaicsystems operating in parallel with the electric power grid is realistic. In order to stabilise the electricity grid, thetechniques of derating the power inverter and controllable local transformers are used.

Electrical power is mainly produced by three-phase generators. This applies to power stations as well as tostandby power supplies and wind generators. In addition to the basic experiments dealing with three-phasesynchronous generators, the experiments involving the "EUG" module include manual and automaticsynchronising circuits as well as experiments on the automatic power factor control (cos-phi control) and powercontrol. Thus, the ”EUG“ module can be used to simulate power station operation in stand-alone (isolated) orinterconnected operation.

High-voltage DC transmission is a method for transmitting electrical energy by means of high DC voltage.This technique is intended for the long-distance bulk transmission of energy via DC, since above certain distances HVDCexhibits a lower degree of loss overall than is the case for conventional transmission using three-phase AC power, in spiteof the increased converter losses.High-voltage DC transmission is frequently used for energy transmission over comparatively short distances as well if theelectrical transmission line has been designed with a high degree of capacitance. This is the case with maritime cablingbut also buried terrestrial lines.One other application is for an intermediate coupling link between networks, which allows for direct exchange of electricalenergy between three-phase power networks.

In this experiment the response of a three-phase variable transformer connected up as an autotransformer isinvestigated operating in conjunction with a power transmission line model including connected load. Due to theenormous increase in photovoltaically generated electricity being fed to the low-voltage power grid, in someareas there is a lot of fluctuation under changing conditions of sunlight and loading. Such fluctuations can becompensated for with the help of a controllable local grid.
