In order to tackle this challenge, cities will have to be transformed in order to integrate larger populations and manage existing resources, guaranteeing quality of life of their inhabitants and driving economic development. This involves combining the ideas, resources and tools of mobility, ICTs, the environment, energy efficiency, town planning, knowledge economy and demographic management.
The second Smart City Expo & World Congress, which will highlight technology and sustainability, will reflect this diversity of disciplines in its congress programme that will be structured around 9 topics: Energy, Environment, Innovation & Technology, Collaborative City & the Smart Society, Town Planning, Mobility, Economy & Governance, Emergency & Security, Smart GEO; the latter two are new to this year’s programme.
The list of over 200 keynote speakers includes Kenneth Berlin, lawyer specialising in the environment and advisor on the subject to US President Barack Obama; Carlo Ratti, Director of the SENSEable City Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Aaron Renn, analyst and Principal of the urban studies studio The Urbanophile; Dan Hill, coordinator in design of the Finesa Foundation for Innovation, Sitra; Charles Landry, economist specialising in urban development and founder of Comedia; Robert Puentes, specialist in infrastructures and urban mobility at the Brookings Institution, New York; Thomas Barrett, Director of technical services and financial advice at the European Investment Bank; John Moore, analyst and founder of Government in the Lab; and Ricky Burdett, urbanist and professor at the London School of Economics. The second Smart City Expo & World Congress will be held from the 13th to 15th November 2012 in the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via Exhibition Centre. In its first year, it brought together over 6,000 visitors from 51 countries, 118 companies and over 200 international speakers making it one of the leading world events on smart cities and sustainable urban development.
