BECAUSE THE company builds so many different types of boats, yo u can't easily put a finger on which kind Wellcraft is best known for. Surely · everyo ne is fami lia r with the nam es
arab (high performance) and Coasta l (fish ing), but to a lot of boaters
Wellcraft means one thing and one th ing only: cruise rs.

3200, and 2800. Now [or 1998 Wellcraft has added a no th er Martinique,
th e 3000. According to the folks a t The Boa t Works in Clean¥ater, Florida , which is Wellcraft's largest cruiser deale r, th is is the first Martinique with an all-fiberglass liner.

and are within easy reach. In a marked departure from the
current fashion trend, the 3000's transom is relatively vertical. That provides space to stow two fenders on the port side, a cockpit door to starboard, and a 3' 4"-wide by lO-inch-deep compartment between that's perfect for stowing shorepower cords, cockpit table pedestals, and cleaning stuff. Mounting platforms are molded in for tender davits-a good thing since the swim platform is on ly a foot deep and you won't be carrying your RIB back there.
The fored eck is relative ly flat and equ ipped with effective nonskid that, in co~junction with the walk-through windshie ld , shou ld make for safe anch orin g. An integral pulpit with ro ll e r is tandard, and in the European fashion , Ul e bowrail is split, with a sma ll step connecting the port and starboard sections. The bowra il on ly com s to be low knee level, providing minimal protection.
Pe rformance is the 3000's ace up th e sleeve. Witl1 optional twin 250-hp Vo lvo Pe nta SX stern drive ', our test boat nearly broke 50 mph , rema rkable for an 11 ,OOO-pound boat with a ]0'6" beam. Her handling wa 'n't bad either, a lth ough it wa hampered by heavy steering and even heavie r Volvo Pe nta contro ls. The 3000 can take a lot of trim b [ore she starts to porpo ise, and she responds we ll to trim tab deflection. A time to plane of six seconds is a lso respectabl e, and during the process Ulere's on ly moderate bow ri e. However, she won't stay on plane below 3000 rpm, even wiu1 Ule drives all the way in and tl1e tabs in the fu ll-clown position.
The competiLion among midcabin 30-footers is fi e rce , so such perfor-
mance and comfort will be important selling features for the 3000. But U1e clincher is bound to be price. According to the people at The Boat Works, you can buy our test boat for just over $1 15,000. That's fully equipped wiu1, among other things, a genset, air conditioner, windlass, cockpit icemaker,
and six-CD changer. Is it any wonder how Wellcraft became so well known for its cruisers? o
