You are invited to take a step along the path of

discipleship by participating in the opportunities

which are presented here in this booklet!

This booklet is meant to help you find ways to become more inten-

tional in your Christian journey by sharing with you the many oppor-

tunities to join with others in our Trinity family to study, to serve, to

pray, to fellowship, to explore, to give, and more. There is such

power in gathering with our Christian sisters and brothers, and if you

haven’t had an experience like this yet, please take the opportunity

to do so. If you are an experienced small grouper, invite someone

along with you. If you haven’t been to a small group in a while,

please include a group in your plan for the coming months.

Opportunities are presented in terms of Spiritual Type: Head, Heart,

Soul, Hands & Feet. We have another booklet called Trinity Disci-

pleship Path (also see pg. 4) that is available to you, which goes into

detail about finding your Spiritual Type. We do not all connect with

God in the same ways, and knowing your Spiritual Type can help as

you make choices about the groups in which you might like to partic-

ipate. Each of these four Spiritual Types is represented here with an

icon, which you will see throughout the brochure. These icons will

start to appear in other publications from Trinity as well. Please

watch out for them and become familiar with their meaning.

You are invited to take a step in discipleship this fall. We hope that

you will use this booklet, in conjunction with the Trinity Discipleship

Path booklet to do just that. Know that all groups are open to all peo-

ple! You are welcome to bring a friend, neighbor, relative, or some-

one who is already a part of the Trinity family.

Grace and peace, The Small Group Ministry Team

Pastor Jenny Smith Walz, Deb De Vos, Nancy Hayes, Lynn Cameron,

Bill Anzel and Cindy Munley.

The Trinity Discipleship Path (a preview. See separate booklet by this name for details)

The Trinity Discipleship Path is not a new program, a new small

group, or a new ministry of our church. Rather, it is a framework to

help us live more fully into our call to be and make disciples for the

transformation of the world and to be a fellowship seeking to

share the love and word of Jesus Christ with all.

We become disciples by God’s grace and through intentional effort

to let God’s grace change us into people who love God and love

neighbor the way God loves. Discipleship is about active engage-

ment. It’s not passive. It doesn’t just happen to us. The Discipleship

Path gives us something to engage with. It helps us as a church to be

sure we are providing tools and steps along the path for participants

to grow as disciples. It helps each of us as disciples to make use of

those tools and take the steps to grow further along our path. The

Discipleship Path helps us as a church to take spiritual responsibility

to do what we can to help you share the love and word of Jesus

Christ with all, and it helps you take spiritual responsibility to do the

same.

The Discipleship Path is not a one size fits all kind of thing. In fact, one

of the great gifts of the Path is that it helps us to see there are vari-

ous spiritual types, which allow each of us to connect deeply with

God in different ways. It is also not linear, meaning that our Disciple-

ship Path is not usually a straight line from point A to point B. God

often encourages us to meander a bit in order to grow in breadth as

well as depth, to create a more balanced experience and expression

of the love and word of Jesus Christ.

The Discipleship Path also serves as a reminder that we are indeed

on a journey. Sometimes it’s easy, even in very active churches, to

become stagnant, to continue to do the same things over and over

Page 7: Small Groups: Fall 2014

5

and wonder why we aren’t growing. Sometimes we forget what we

are moving toward, what the point of discipleship is.

In Mark 12:28-34 Jesus tells us that the two greatest commandments

are to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your

soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and to

“love your neighbor as yourself.” John Wesley, the founder of

Methodism, called the goal of discipleship Total Sanctification or

Christian Perfection, which is to love perfectly, as God loves. We are

called to be holy, and this happens in partnership and communion

with God, the source of all grace. As we move toward the center we

experience salvation more fully. We dwell more fully in the Kingdom

of God. And this also happens in partnership and communion with

others in your church family. As we move closer to God, we also

grow closer to one another, and vice versa. We do not travel alone

either. We need both God and others to grow as disciples.

The first step in this invitation to be on the Discipleship Path is to get

to know your spiritual type. Are you someone who is most oriented

to Head type spirituality? Maybe you are more of a Heart person? Or

a Soul person? Or a Hands and Feet person? Most likely you are a

combination, resonating most with a couple of these types, while

feeling less at home with the others. This booklet is arranged by spir-

itual type. You might have a sense of your type(s) simply by noting

which small group offerings you resonate with most. In the other

booklet, The Trinity Discipleship Path, you will find a short inventory

to help you further determine your type and also more detailed de-

scriptions of each.

We hope that you will accept this invitation to become more inten-

tional in your discipleship and faith journey. Look for The Trinity Dis-

cipleship Path booklet for much more information. Join Pastor Jenny

Smith Walz on Sunday, September 28, from noon to 2:00 p.m. to

discover even more about how you can “be on the path”! (see p. 12)

Trinity Church is a BeADisciple.com Congregational Partner

It is through this partnership that we are able to

connect you with the various online groups you will

find throughout this booklet. If you have already

participated in one of our online offerings at Trinity, you’ve probably

already seen this partnership in action.

This fall, we are connecting you to several online opportunities,

which allow you to directly join a group with others around the

world. These are excellent courses, ranging in length and intensity.

You are welcome to explore the www.BeADisciple.com site for even

more opportunities.

In the future, we will continue to create our own online groups for

the Trinity community. And we will also have the opportunity to cre-

ate online small groups for the Trinity community in partnership with

The Upper Room Ministries and Wesley Theological School. These

are exciting ways to bring excellent, enlivening small group interac-

tion and education to you wherever you are in ways that might bet-

ter meet your availability than many of our in-person groups.

To register for one of these groups, you will need to do so directly

with BeADisciple.com. There is a fee associated with each course,

which you will also pay directly to them. If you need any assistance

or have any questions, please contact Pastor Jenny Smith Walz

([email protected] or 908-852-3020x13)

Head type spirituality people have an intellectu-al “thinking” spirituality. They connect

with God primarily through what they can see, touch, and vividly imagine. They love words, written and spoken, and value structure, organization, and tradition. They are most likely to seek out theology or bible study groups.

Duration: Six weeks Location: 105 The cross is the primary symbol of our faith, and a powerful one at that. We claim Jesus' death on the cross as a means of God's saving, atoning work. But have you ever wondered how that works exactly? Should we rejoice about this, grieve for Jesus' untimely and horrible death, or perhaps some of both? How does Jesus’ death on a cross provide a means of atonement for us today? Join us in a conversation about the meaning of the cross. We'll converse with scripture, with Christian theologi-ans through the years, and with each other in a circle where your questions about the cross are just as valuable as the many answers we will discover.

Want to discover more opportunities to explore Heart Spirituality?

Many groups cross over the lines of Spirituality Types. These

groups, which appear in other areas of this booklet

(indicated in parentheses), might also appeal to Heart Spirituality people:

Guiding Ourselves to Wellness (Hands and Feet)

Trinity Garden (Hands and Feet)

Discovering The Trinity Discipleship Path (Head)

Worshipping Through Sign Language (Head)

The Women’s Retreat (Soul)

See The Trinity Discipleship Path for even more suggestions

Soul type spirituality people tend to be more focused on hearing from God or being with

God than speaking to God, seeing union with God as their spiritual goal. This is a contemplative, introspec-tive, imaginative and intuitive type of connection with God. They tend to seek solitude or small groups in which they can explore prayer, art, meditation, poetry, and anything else that can help them connect.

Exploring the Labyrinth Leader: Rev. Jenny Smith Walz 908-852-3020 [email protected] Start Date: Sunday, November 2 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Duration: One Week Location: Gather in Trinity House 401

Did you know that Trinity Church has a prayer labyrinth? It is located at the back of our property near Trinity House, and this workshop will explore the history and use of labyrinths as a spiritual tool. A labyrinth is a winding, circu-lar path, symbolic of our journey with God. It's not a maze; you cannot lose your way. Labyrinths can be a powerful prayer tool, as they guide us on an inward journey toward God and an outward journey with God. This is not just a prayer in our minds and hearts, but an embodied prayer - one that uses our physical being and movements to connect with God. Dress for the weather! In case of inclement weather we will remain indoors.

Centering Prayer Leader: Rev. Jenny Smith Walz 908-852-3020x13 [email protected] Start Date: Tuesday, September 2 10:00 - 11:00 a. m. Duration: Ongoing, weekly Location: Rotunda Leader: Pat Riegler 908-303-2067 [email protected] Start Date: Wednesday, October 1 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Duration: Ongoing, weekly Location: TBD Want to grow more deeply in your prayer life? Want to create a habit of pray-ing and dwelling in God’s presence? We’ll gather every week to practice the art of Centering Prayer. This is a type of silent prayer through which we learn to experience God’s presence within us, closer that breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer into a receptive prayer of resting in God. You’re welcome to join at any time. Each week, we’ll review the “how” of this type of prayer, engage in it for about 20 minutes, and then reflect as people feel led about their experi-ence. Join anytime and come as often as you can, but don’t worry if you need to miss. You are welcome to shift between evening and morning sessions or you could even come to both. Watch this VIDEO to learn more about Centering Prayer.
