The 7 Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu offers

tourists the chance to enjoy a mix of both

the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail combined. This

amazing trek runs beneath the sacred Salkantay

mountain (6.271m/20569ft), one of the highest and

most stunning in the Peruvian Andes, passing through

Quechua communities and lesser-known Inca ruins, to

finally join the 4-day Inca Trail to Machupicchu.

Starting on the Salkantay Trek, the route diverges

just before Salkantay Pass and instead goes over the

Incachiriaska Pass (Frozen Inca Pass) which leads down

to the village of Wayllabamba where you join the Inca

Trail and continue on to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.

Today is a fairly easy day to help us ease in to the trek. Our tour

begins by visiting the amazing ruins of Tarawasi which are located

around 2 hours by car from Cusco. After touring the site we will

continue on to Mollepata where we’ll begin our trek. Following

a less traversed path, we will see a variety of native plants,

flowers and birds along the way and have fantastic views of the

valley below. We will camp at Marcocasa, providing us fantastic

views of the snow-capped peak Rayuska. This campsite is rarely

used, so we will be able to enjoy this beautiful spot in complete

peace and tranquility.

Leaving Marcocasa in the morning, we will hike towards

Soraypampa where we will join the main Salkantay trekking route.

Once again, today is fairly easy going only traversing a short

distance. Nevertheless, the views today are fantastic and we

will see several high peaks towering above us. When we arrive in

Soraypampa the 3 main peaks of the region, Humantay, Tucurway,

and Salkantay will all be in view. From Soraypampa we will hike

an hour to Salkantaypampa, where we will set up camp. Because

we will be camping at a high altitude, hat, gloves, and extra layers

are strongly recommended.

DAY 01

DAY 02

Today we will head for the Inca Trail. As we walk through

the valley towards Salkantay, we instead take a side path

that leads us up and over the Incachiriaska Pass (Frozen

Inca Pass), a pass which will be our highest point on the

trek. The views here are breath taking, and give you an idea

of why the Incas worshiped Salkantay mountain as a god. We

may also even have the opportunity to spot some Peruvian

wildlife such as Viscachas (rabbit-like Chinchillas), White

Tailed Deer and possibly some of the rarer Andean animals

like Condors, Guanacos, and Vicunas. After the pass, we

descend to the small community of Pampacawana, where we

will camp for the night.

DAY 03

Setting off from Pampacawana, we plunge down into the valley to finally join the Inca Trail at

Wayllabamba, along our route we will pass our first Inca site of the trek Paucarcancha. At Wayllabamba,

we will switch our gear from mules to our wonderful porters who will continue to carry our gear. This is

to prevent damage to the Inca Trail. Trekking on with our porters we will head up to our campsite for the

night, Llulluchapampa. This is the closest campsite to Dead Woman’s Pass. As we climb we’ll pass through

various biozones including the low sierra, cloud forest and the high puna. Again there is a variety of

plant and birdlife and if we are lucky we may spot White Tailed Deer again.

Pampacawana Llulluchapampa

DAY 04

Today is a relatively hard day as we have to traverse 2 passes, luckily our previous night’s campsite is

located fairly close to the first pass making the hike less intense. During our hike today, we will witness

the fantastic vistas of the high mountain ranges around us, enter the changing environment of the

cloud forest, and be able to visit 2 distinct Inca sites Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca making all the hard

work worth it. Our campsite tonight is at Chaquicocha which is one of the quieter campsites and gives us

beautiful views of the sun setting over the mountains in the distance.

Llulluchapampa Chaquicocha

DAY 05

Compared to Day 5, we will be treated to a relaxing day of hiking on Day 6 through some of the most

beautiful scenery the Inca Trail has to offer. We will hike the Inca Flat, a part of the Inca Trail known

for its gentle ascents and descents, allowing us to to enjoy the lush cloud forest around us and the

spectacular views of the Andes in the distance. We will also visit two more Inca ruins, Phuyupatamarca

and Winay Wayna. All together this is by far one of the most impressive days of the trek and many

people’s favorites. Our campsite for the night is at Winay Wayna. After our easy hike we will arrive to

early afternoon giving us time to have an extended guided tour of the grounds.

DAY 06

Day 7 is another highlight of our trek. We

will wake up early to enter the Sun Gate

where you’ll get your first fantastic

views of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival

to Machu Picchu you’ll have a 2 hour

guided tour of all the most significant

sites learning about Incan history and

culture. Afterwards free time will be

given to wander around the citadel or

climb Huayna Picchu, the highest peaked

mountain of Machu Picchu with even more

Inca structures at the peak (we can help

you book the mandatory tickets for this

unforgettable hike in advance). Together,

we will return to the Aguas Calientes

by bus, where you can have your choice

of restaurants for lunch. After lunch,

we will take the afternoon train to

Ollantaytambo and then the van back to

Cusco.

BRIEFING

All of our guides have studied Tourism at Cusco National University. They have all grown up in the region and have

a true passion to teach others about their heritage and culture. We are very careful to choose the best guides

for each group they are highly trained, have excellent language proficiency and communication skills and are

regularly evaluated by the service reports each guest fills in after each service.

We also have guides proficient in several languages besides English and Spanish, including French, Italian, German,

for special requests in all of our treks, not only on the Inca Trail, there will be a guide for every 8 guests with

one of them being the head guide. This ensures a higher safety and attention to guests versus other operators.

Every guide has received training in first aid from a physician. We conduct mandatory

training sessions every February, which every single SPE tour guide must attend. Your

tour guide will always have a first-aid kit for basic medical problems (traveler’s

diarrhea, cuts, scrapes, etc.) and oxygen. We will get you off the trail as quickly

and comfortably as possible, if needed, and ensure you get directly to a clinic for

treatment. Every guide is also equipted with a radio comunication that can be used

anywhere on the mountain to connect anywhere in the world in case of an emergency.

For an extra cost, these can be used for personal calls as well.

The SPE chefs cook delicious meals that many previous trekkers have raved about. We honor all

food restrictions. Be sure to remind your tour guide of any food restrictions at the beginning of

your trek. Food is typically served family-style. You will enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner each

day of the trek, along with a happy hour of tea and snacks. A snack each morning will also be

provided for you to enjoy along the hike. We will provide purified water needed at meal times to

drink and refill a reusable water bottle or camel back (we recommend at least 3L capacity to

the necessary equipment and logistics to hike and camp (tents, food, gear, etc).

Without porters, climbing the Inca Trail would be close to impossible for most

people. They will set up all your tents, help cook and serve you amazing food,

prepare hot water to wash with, welcome you happily to each site…all with a

smile on their face. We strive to keep our porters well cared for and healthy.
