TheMichiganCorporateRelaBonsNetwork(MCRN)isastatewideuniversitynetworkdesignedtocreatepartnerships thatwill connect state industry to cri6cal university talent inways thatwillhelp theMichigan economy grow and prosper. Six public universi6es inMichiganmake up thenetwork. They are Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, Wayne StateUniversity, Western Michigan University, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor andDearborn.OnecomponentoftheMCRNistheSmallCompanyInternshipAwardProgram(SCIA).This program provides each school funding for 2016 to help Michigan small businesses hirestudentstoworkasinternsonprojectsthatarebothbeneficialtothecompanyandacademicallyrelevanttothestudent.

ELIGIBILITY,AWARD,ANDREPORTINGGUIDELINES•  Thecompanyisastart-uporasmall-sizedMichiganbusiness,upto500employeeswithsignificant

businessopera6onsoccurringinMichigan.Priori6zedpreferencewillbegivento:•  Acompanythatisfocusedoninnova3veworkintheScience,Technology,Engineering,and

Math(STEM)fieldsandprovidesaSTEMinternship•  IfnotaSTEMfocusedcompany,shouldprovideaSTEMfocusedinternship

•  Acompanymaypar6cipatewithupto2ofthenetworkschoolsandemployupto2internsusingfundsfromtheSCIAprogram(pleasenotethatifthereare2internsfrom1school,theywouldsplit1award).

•  PreferencewillbegiventocompanieswhohavenotyetreceivedaSCIAaward.•  Eachschoolwillmanageitsownapplica6onandselec6onprocesstoselectcompaniestopar6cipate

beginninginJanuary2016,withallcompanyawardsfinalandinternshiredbyJune30,2016.•  Thecompanywillconductinterviews,maketheinternshipoffer,assignasupervisor,provide

orienta6on,training,andperformanceexpecta6onsandfeedbackfortheintern.Consulta6onandguidancewillbeavailablefromtheschoolfordevelopmentoftheinternshipjobdescrip6onandpromo6ngtheinternshiptoqualifiedstudents.

•  Thecompanyagreestoasitevisit/phonecallbeforeand/orduringtheinternshipperiodbyaMCRNschoolrepresenta6ve.

•  Themaximumawardforacompanyisupto$3,500.•  Theintern’scompensa6onwillbefunded50%fromtheSCIAprogram(butnotmorethanthe

matchingaward)and50%fromtheemployersothat,forexample,totalstudentearningsofatleast$7,000wouldneedtobereportedforthecompanytobeeligibleforamatching$3,500award.

•  Anhourlyrateofpayofaminimumof$12isrecommended,commensuratewithacademicmajor,internshipexpecta6ons,andstudent’squalifica6ons.

•  Uponcomple6onofinternship,companyagreestosubmitareportoutliningthebenefits,outcomes,anddeliverablesgainedasaresultofinternship,aswellasthedes6na6onofthestudentuponcomple6onoftheinternship.Thisinforma6onwillbeincludedinthefinalreporttotheMichiganEconomicDevelopmentCorpora6on(MEDC).
