John Bakker was first up with adiscussion about thepainting of the yellowgun port strip on the HMS Vanguard. Heexplained that there was not much workdone on his ship models, as he was busywith his scroll sawmaking decorations forHalloween.Heshowedsomeoftheitemshehaddoneonhis scroll saw, which canhelpexplainwhyheissogoodatmakingsomeofthe items for his ship models. He alsodiscussedsomethingsabouthisWashingtonGalley and the necessity to make moreprogress on it. Some discussion wasconcerning the recent fires in the OrangeCountyareaandtheneedforhischildrentorelocate some of John’s models (avoidingthefire)includingtheSoleilRoyal, whichwehavenotseenforsometime, asitwasinhischildren’shome. I thought apictureof theSoleil Royal would not go amiss for ourreaders’ interest, showing hismodel of thePhiladelphia Galley along with hismidsectionoftheUSS.Constitutionmountedabove themodel. markers used by John, as there was also adiscussion on this aspect of ship modelbuilding. Next up was Don Dressel whodiscussed theprogresshe ismakingon themastingandriggingoftheDerfflinger.Manyofthesparshavealreadybeenmadeandtherigging of the shrouds on the foremast andmainmast is progressing. There are acoupleofphotosonthenextpagewithshowtheprogressbeingmadeontheselines.Donhas also replaced the gammoning on the

turns and orientation that should have been there. Aswill be noted, the bowsprit has awoodling installed halfway along its lengthwhich is again technically not correct but thebowhadbeenoriginallycutbyJohn, ashewasnotgoingtoinstalltheriggingandhadtobelengthened to its proper length. A form of surgery had also to be done on the forwardgrating in frontof the foremast to incorporatetheblocksnecessary forthemainyard liftwhichwillbe installed later in therunningrigging installationbuthad tobedomeat thisstage before the fore shrouds were done. A hole was cut at the proper location in thegratinganda longwoodenblock installed to support the shelve, which shouldhavebeeninstalledonthemaindeckbelowtheforecastledeck, butapparentlythereisnomaindeck

at this location (I do not know how theoriginal kit instructions delt with thisproblem). See the photo to the left thatshows the lines coming out of the gratingwith the triple sister block attached. Oncethiswas done, then the fore shroudswerecompletedandthemainshroudsstarted. Doncommentedthathethinksheisgoing to “rattle down” the lower shroudsbefore he progresses much further, as hethinks that is the way it was really donewhen the actual masting and rigging of aship took place. Once the lower shroudsand ratlines are in place, then the lowerstayswillbe installedwiththeirrespectivemouses, cotharpins, and special blocks.Instead of trying to make a mouse out ofline, Don first carves a mouse to propershapeoutofwood, paintsitblack, andtheninstalls it that way. No one has, as yet, made anymention of the difference and itlooksgoodtoscale. Next Don talked about just how heinstalledtheshrouds, thepicturetotheleftindicating the “jig” that he made to makesure the deadeyes all match up once theindividualshroudsareinstalled. The“jig”ismadebasedontheplansofthemodelwithrespect to size. The last picture of theDerfflinger shownbelow indicates justhowthisturnsout. Although the Mayflower Groupmeeting was lacking in attendance, stillthose who attended had a great time.PerhapstheauctionmeetingkeptsomeSMAmembers from attending themeeting. Wehope formoreSMAmembers to attend thenext session of the Mayflower Group.

Mr.EtsuroTsuboi
