10 KM away from National highway in Karachi Pakistan, surrounded in farms near bank of Malir River a small village “Samoon G oth” is situated. There are around 400 families in th e village. Most of peoples work in farms or sell vegetables and fruits in surrounding areas. Nath a Age 50 was among the few peoples who made a small hut in this village for his family around 30 years ago. He was a labor but after an accident he became paralyzed & was unable to earn bread and but ter for his money. Malir was largely cultivat ed area with Guava and other fruit. When he survived from a long illness, he decided to sell guava in nearby areas. During last few years most of farms have been converted into housing schemes and like many other people, Natha again lost his job. Currently he lives with his wife Amina, 2 sons 8 daughters, 3 school going grand sons and on e grand daughter in small rooms made with straw and mud blocks. When his sons started jobs, he managed to save some money to bui ld a 10 x14 ft room with concrete bl ock & asbestos ceiling. There is no perman ent source of income for his family, He and his two sons earn few thousands rupees per month which is insuf- ficient to fulfill basic needs of his family. He pay 300 rupees per month for an electrical connection. Low voltage and Power outage i s common. Often power outage exceeds to 3 to 4 days. The solar lighting kit that was installed in his house under the pervaiz Lodhie’s revolutionary program Pehili Kiran (First ray of Light) is consists of a 10 watt solar panel, 3 LED lamps and a small sealed plastic enclosure in which a small rechargeable battery, a charge controller and few other components are wired. System is also equipped with a socket for cell phone charging. "When we started installation of solar kits, they asked, 'What is this?' "Says Shahid Siddique, Senior Engineering Manager of Shaantech.”I explained to them how it worked. Then, as people saw it, they said, 'Wow, what a wonderful thing this is!

`Everyone in our family was so

happy when we  fi rst   me

seen this wonderful light. We

are used to go to bed early 

a  er sunset but that day our 

grandsons played   ll late

night . They were dancing and 

singing with joy and 

happiness. Now they paly ,

read and do their homework 

under solar lights. Our 

neighbor ask about the light.

My daughters also work in

late hours. The do

embroidery, sew cloths and 

do other domes c work that 

was quite di  ffi cult in the light 

of kerosene lamp . I am now 

able to save some money. I

will use my saving for themarriage of my daughters,

Nursing to goats, caring for children and

carrying out household jobs is a daily routine

that hasn't changed much over the centuries. In

a small kitchen made with weed his elder

daughter kneads wheat floor dough for her

family's evening meal. In small clay pit stove she

burn wood to cook food. She blows through apipe every once in a while to keep a flame

burning. She was used to wind up her work when

the sundown. Now she smiles as she pulls the

small chain connected to lamp holder to switch

on a solar lamp. "It was a great moment of my

life when I saw this light coming on for the first

time, I was very happy," she says.
