HOW SOLAR ENERGY TRANSFORMS LIFESTYLE & BRING HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY TO SMALL HOUSEHOLDS IN RURAL AREAS ?
company
We have kept aside kerosene
Lamps, candles and emergency
lights. After using solar lights,
these lamps became useless for
us. They are expensive. Kerosenelamps increase poverty, a large
percentage of our household’s
income is spent on kerosene, and
they limit our profitable activities.
Kerosene lamps in rural areas are
one of the major causes of illness
and death due to indoor air
pollution and fires. Saira, younger
daughter of Natha, who is a
student of higher secondary class,
says.
LEDTRONICS INC.
When he was first approached and listened
about solar lights and its potential impact on
lifestyle of his family, Natha and his wife
Amina were not confident that how can
these small solar lamp change their lives.
The solar lighting kit that was installed in his
house under the pervaiz Lodhie’s
revolutionary program Pehili Kiran (First rayof Light) is consists of a 10 watt solar panel,
3 LED lamps and a small sealed plastic
enclosure in which a small rechargeable
battery, a charge controller and few other
components are wired. System is also
equipped with a socket for cell phone
charging.
"When we started installation of solar kits,
they asked, 'What is this?' "Says Shahid
Siddique, Senior Engineering Manager of
Shaantech.”I explained to them how it
worked. Then, as people saw it, they said,
'Wow, what a wonderful thing this is!

Amina wife of Natha Says
Nursing to goats, caring for children and
carrying out household jobs is a daily routine
that hasn't changed much over the centuries. In
a small kitchen made with weed his elder
daughter kneads wheat floor dough for her
family's evening meal. In small clay pit stove she
burn wood to cook food. She blows through apipe every once in a while to keep a flame
burning. She was used to wind up her work when
the sundown. Now she smiles as she pulls the
small chain connected to lamp holder to switch
on a solar lamp. "It was a great moment of my
life when I saw this light coming on for the first
time, I was very happy," she says.

Chinese rechargeableLED lights are com-
monly used as emer-

village but such lights
are unreliable and their
repairing is quite
expensive.
During long power

recharge such emer-

lives in dark.
