THE RUNNER OR BASERUNNER
Cannot lead off the base beforethe ball is hit. Can leave
whenthe ball is hit or the ball passeshome plate-or is played
on.
Cannot slide on 1st base.
Can take one base on any
overthrow that goes out of play Cannot run past second or
third
baseonly 1st and home. Must touch each base while
running.
Cannot run out of the baseline toavoid a tag.
Must tag the base on all fly ballsthat are caught. Is out if hit
by a batted ball while
off base or while running to abase.

THE FIELDERS
Cannot stand in the baseline,or block a base runnerunless the
fielder has the ball.
Must tag the runner on allunforced plays
Make all the calls and arenever wrong.
Must NEVER stand on thebase while the ball is beingpitched
As a pitcher, you must archthe ball at least 3 feet or atleast 6
feet high. The battercan still hit the pitch if theywant.

In softball, you can choose between playing fast or slow
pitch.
Slow pitch differs in that it usually yields more hitting during
agame than fast pitch. The task then becomes how to manipulate
the ball to throw off the hitter.

1 Remember that the biggest goal of slowpitch is to put the ball
where the batter
won't be able to make solid contact withit. She may hit it, but
you should try tomake it so she won't be able to hit itwhere she'd
like to hit it.
2 Watch the height of your pitch. Youhave to keep it between 6
to 12 feet offthe ground. Higher or lower isconsidered an illegal
pitch. This givesyou a wide range of arc for your pitchthat you can
use to throw off the timingof the batter.

3. Hold the ball out in front of you.
4. Swing the pitching arm back. Then on the
forward swing, once it passes the hip, deliver
the ball, palm up, and release it.
5. Consider stepping forward or backward as
needed. This is permitted as long as the pivot
foot is in contact with the pitcher's plate until
the ball is released.
