Sligo Live is made possible by the enthusiasm and hard work of its board, producersand the numerous volunteers and business partners who contribute time, services andfinancial support.

Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council both play their part through fundingthe festival programme. The festivals and events sector is increasingly recognized as avaluable driver of business and brings thousands of visitors to Sligo which is always awelcome boost to the local economy.

The partnership between Sligo Live and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festivalhighlights the strong historical links between our two cities and countries. Thedeveloping links between the festival and North America are another positive aspect,particularly as 2013 hosts “The Gathering” in Ireland bringing Irish people and friends ofIreland here for a year long celebration of our country.

The Corrupt are a Rock band from the west coast of Ireland. They are MichaelGormley - Vocals and Guitar, Sean McCarthy - Lead Guitar, Charlie Long - Bass,Eddie Delaney - Drums. Their music has been described as adrenaline fueledrhythm led by raw infectious guitar riffs; think Foo Fighters meets White Stripes. TheCorrupt are currently in Pre-production for their up-coming debut album Dance toyour Own Beat with a tour to follow.

A regular weekly informal session of Irish, Gypsy, and European folk music withmembers of popular local bands, who merge music from their classical, jazz, rock,Catalan and Irish traditional backgrounds into a unique blend of eclectic music.

The White Gorillas

The White Gorillas were formed by members of two cover bands,Whitewater and Gorilla Radio. Their set list contains music fromartistes such as Bob Dylan, Paulo Nutini, and Nina Simone rightthrough to Kings of Leon and Led Zeppelin and even the oddnineties dance classic!

WGBH Boston presents“A Celtic Sojourn with Brian O Donovan”

One of the USA’s most popular Irish and Roots music radio shows “A Celtic Sojourn”on WGBH in Boston will broadcast a show from Sligo Live 2012. Lookout for the showsroving reporters throughout the festival weekend. Brian O Donovan is a native ofConakilty in Co Cork and is one of America’s most respected roots music radiopresenters. As well as being a well know broadcaster, Brian O Donovan is a well-respected festival producer in the USA, Celtic Sojourn at Sligo Live will be broadcasta number of times on WGBH over the coming months and festival highlights will bedistributed throughout America on National Public Radio nationwide.

Arrivals is a Sligo Live programme strand whichintroduces emerging Artistes to a wider stage. It is funded

by the Bars and Cafes of Sligo and the Arts Council

As a teenager, Marianne Green rediscovered her father’s oldvinyl Irish traditional music albums and began a musical journeywith appearances all over the world. Her debut album Dear IrishBoy is co-produced by the iconic Andy Irvine. Marianne

selected the songs from old books and field recordingsand discovered some remarkable material, rarely

recorded by contemporary singers. Marianne isespecially attracted to the musical gems ofBelfast and County Down. She is joinedby her band, Magnus Wiik - Guitar &Dobro, Martin O’Hare - Bodhran & bones

and Sonnich Lydom - Accordion &harmonica for this lunchtime concert inthe atmospheric setting of The Factory.

Sligo Music Industry Day

Kieran Quinn’s theme nights have become the stuff of locallegend. Kieran and his The Odd Couple sidekicks Eddie Leeand Ken ‘Tonto’ McDonald are the house band backing thecream of Sligo musicians. This latest episode features artistessuch as Cathy Jordan, Dave Flynn, Sinead Conway, AminahHughes, Seamie McGowan and Joe Hunt interpreting PaulSimon’s rich catalogue. Over the past 40 years, Simon hascreated a cornucopia of classics and remains one of the mostenduringly popular singer/songwriters in musical history.

Common Tongues were formed in 2010 by childhood friends Tom Anderson and OliHinkins who shared a passion for songwriting. With a sound that lies somewhere between Crosby, Stills and Nashand Arcade Fire. Common Tongues also cite Bon Iver, Local Natives, The Band and Eelsas influences.

FidilDonegal innovators, Fidil, double up with I DrawSlow from Dublin, who have been making waveswith their unique, mainly self-writtenbluegrass/Americana songs. This trio of fiddlershave brought the magical Donegal style into the21st century. They have forged a reputation forexhilarating and challenging music that draws onthe rich heritage of Co. Donegal and its famousunique fiddle style. Fidil are pioneering a trulyoriginal, fresh and exciting sound in world musicwhile still managing to maintain and respect thefiery exuberance of Donegal traditional fiddle music.

I Draw SlowI Draw Slow’s brand of indie bluegrass in theGillian Welch/David Rawlings mode, alsobears a stamp all their own. Their finelycrafted songs are down to siblings, Daveand Louise Holden. They play with a realsense of joy, never letting their virtuosityget in the way of delivering deliciousperformances. Their rich blend of Irish/Americana/Roots with Colin Derham’s hauntingclaw hammer banjo and Adrian Hart’s forceful fiddleforming a fine backdrop for Louise Holden’s heart-meltingvocals. Double bassist, Konrad Liddy and Dave Holden - Guitar add spine tinglingharmonies. They offer a unique angle of storytelling without sounding like they tumbled offthe Nashville/Appalachian conveyor belt.

John DoyleJohn Doyle is one of the most influential and important musicians in Irish music today. Hewas a founding member of Irish American supergroup Solas in the 1990s and recentlyserved as band leader for the Joan Baez band. As a guitarist, he is unparalleled for hisharmonic and rhythmic genius. His instrumental prowess contributed to his 2010GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional World Music album for his collaboration withfiddler Liz Carroll on Double Play.

Sharon has recorded and toured with a who’swho of the Irish and Global Music Industry,including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead OConnor, Jackson Brown, John Prine, SteveEarle, Mark Knopfler, The RTE Orchestra,The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Willie Nelson,Nigel Kennedy, Alison Krauss and ShaneMacGowan – a list that is testament to Sharon’sversatility as well as talent. For this, her firstSligo Live appearance, Sharon is joined by herlongtime ace guitarist, Jim Murray and JackMeagher on Electric Guitar, mandolin andbacking vocals.

Wallis Bird makes a welcome return to Sligo Live. The 5’ 2“bundle of white heat throws herself around the stage withwilful abandon, urging the audience into a rousing sing-a-long. She can transition seamlessly from the defiant self-affirming anthems to the most hushed and fragile ballads thatcaptivate an audience into spellbound silence. The Irish artisthas paid her dues, shredding her fingers and breaking stringafter string from the sheer force of playing and putting herentire soul into each performance with a level of energy thatmakes her an unassailable force of nature, while her bandconjures up a lively brew.

Sligo Live is again joining with CCE Sligo Town Branch to host the Fiddler of Dooney.The first of two days of intense competition will see under-16 fiddlers compete for theJunior Fiddler of Dooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one ofthe oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music inSligo and the U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond The Fiddler of Dooneybrings an adjudicator over from America each year. Brian Conway, Liz Carroll, Tony DeMarco, Kevin Burke and Maurice Lennon have all filled the role and this year we areprivileged to have Boston’s Winnie Horan from supergroup, Solas, and former winner,Liz Kane, judge the competition.

Saramai has been focused on songwriting and playing live, opening for the likesof Jack L, Grada, Declan O'Rourke, Fionn Regan, Ruthie Foster, Luka Bloom,Kila, The Lost Brothers, and Meteor nominee Valerie Francis, in venues all aroundthe country. Although comparisons to Kate Bush and Tori Amos have beendrawn, Saramai has a distinct playing, singing and songwriting style. There areclassical twists and hints of darkness throughout unusually structured songs.Saramai was listed in the top 50 releases this year. Watch this space....

Galway sister act, Liz and YvonneKane are two fiddlers fromLetterfrack, in Co. Galway, whorose to prominence touring ‘TheDiamond Mountain Sessions’ withSharon Shannon's band TheWoodchoppers. Their style ofplaying is heavily influenced bythe South Sligo tradition as well asthat of East Galway, particularlythe music of the great composerPaddy Fahey, whose tunes are allover their repertoire As one mightexpect, the two sisters can playvery tightly together. Rather thanplay off each other and makingcontrasting individual statementson the tunes, they chose to stayclose at all times, the result beinga powerful and gorgeous unison.

Marit Fält and Rona Wilkie won aDanny Kyle Award at CelticConnections 2012 and Rona wascrowned the BBC Scotland YoungTraditional Musician of the Year inthe same week. Sligo Live and CCE Sligo Town Branch host the Fiddler of Dooney inspired by the W BYeats poem of the same name. Today’s competition is the turn of the Senior (over 16s)players. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and mostprestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition.

The roll of previous winners reads like a who’s who of traditional fiddling and includesMatt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Kane, Paddy Glacken, Seamus and ManusMcGuire.

Competitors are the top young fiddlers from all over the country and overseas and thestandard of playing is a joy to behold. Flute player, Roger Sherlock was born in 1932 nearGurteen on the Sligo/Mayo border. He emigrated to London in 1953 and became one ofthe leading figures in London Irish music. Few musicians speak about their Londonexperiences without warmly reminiscing about Roger Sherlock and his generosity inhelping and encouraging other musicians.

This concert features London-born musicians, including John and James Carty, MickO’Connor, Tommy, Jacqueline, Bernadette and Marion McCarthy, who grew up in theworld created by Roger and his contemporaries

London in the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s was a vital venue for Irish-music-in-exile, playinghost to musicians such as Michael Gorman, Margaret Barry, Bobby Casey, JimmyPower, Willie Clancy, Lucy Farr, Julia Clifford, Paddy Taylor, Raymond Roland, VincentGriffin, Sean McGuire, Liam Farrell, and Brendan McGlinchey .

Roger Sherlock recorded with Kit O’Connor, Sean McGuire and Josephine Keegan and‘Memories Of Sligo’ with Mary Conroy. He was featured on the TV documentary and CD.‘Bringing It All Back Home’, playing with Bobby Casey and John Bowe. Roger was alsothe subject of a Se Mo Laoch documentary for TG4.

He returned to Ireland in 1996 to live in Bettystown, Co. Meath. In 2009 he received theprestigious TG4 Hall of Fame Award.

This new set by Van Morrison will include many of his more lyrical andautobiographical songs from Astral Weeks; No Guru, No Method, No Teacher; Hymns to the Silence and other albums. He will beaccompanied by his daughter, Singer/Songwriter, Shana Morrison and arhythm section comprising Dave Keary – guitar; Paul Moran – keyboards;Paul Moore – bass and Jeff Lardner – drums. In the show, some of Van’smost lyrical songs will be interspersed with readings of his poetry and thatof some of his favourite poets, particularly Yeats and Blake.

This new departure sees Van Morrison explore his repertoire in a fresh andinnovative manner. In many of his recent performances, he interprets his fortyalbum back catalogue; one of rock music’s richest, in different ways. Van willshare with audiences some of the autobiographical and literary influences inhis songs, giving a glimpse of Van’s humanity and warmth behind his notedreserve.

At their best Van Morrison’s live performances are regarded as transcendentaland inspired and over the years many of his recordings have been widelyviewed among the greatest ever made, with several included in ‘best albumlists’. Since his international breakthrough with Them in 1964, Van the Manhas carved out a career as one of the most respected and influential artistesin popular music.
