Summer Reading

A major component of High Schools That Work is the required summer reading. Reading is a practiced skill and summer reading offers students the opportunity to continue reading and thinking. Students are responsible for reading the novel and completing the Entry Ticket below for a Socratic Seminar in Advisory in the fall. Books are available at all local bookstores. Additionally, a limited number of copies are available to be checked out at the local library and from the school library. Summer School Offerings There are two summer school opportunities this summer within the district. Registration information is available through the Guidance Office. PCSC (Pierce County Skills Center) – Will be offering classes this summer at Spanaway Lake High School in many subjects such as: Applied Algebra, Applied Geometry, Applied Math 3, Culinary Essentials, Independent Living, Intro to Engineering, Intro to Sports Medicine as well as others held at the skills center. See Guidance Office for registration forms or online at www.pcskillscenter.org. Bethel Online Summer School – Will be offering core classes as well as a few electives online only. Students who need Communication Arts, Histories, Science as well as Art, PE and Health can take courses through Bethel Online Summer School. Registration will begin May 29th. Important Senior Information Senior Ball Dress Code Boys Tuxedo or dress suit; including collared shirt, tie, vest and/or jacket, dress pants and shoes. Shirts are to be worn at all times. No tennis shoes of any kind are permitted (chuck taylors, wrestling shoes, etc.) Girls Formal dresses or gowns may be strapless or may feature spaghetti straps. Exposed backs are acceptable; however, bare stomachs or bare midriffs are not permitted. Dress shoes or sandals are to be worn. Under garments should not be visible. See-through apparel and gowns or dresses with slits that are above the mid-thigh area are not permitted. Extremely tight, extremely low-cut garments, very short dresses or skirts are also unacceptable. Fines & Fees – Senior Ball & Graduation All fines and fees must be paid in order for seniors to attend the senior ball and participate in the graduation ceremony.

GRADUATION - June 13th @ the Tacoma Dome 7:00 PM Immediately following the ceremony, there will be plenty of time to celebrate. Just as a wedding, confirmation, bar mitzvah or baptism are important ceremonies, so is commencement. Please remember that people have traveled from all over the country to watch commencement and hear their graduate’s name being called. Out of respect for our graduates and the many guests it is imperative that there are no disruptions such as air horns, beach balls, or projectiles. On behalf of the Tacoma Dome, please be advised that helium balloons are not allowed in the arena. Remember that earning a high school diploma will stand out as one of the most memorable accomplishments in each of these graduate’s lives. Therefore, to make this memory special for all students, the tone of the ceremony will be one of dignity and respect. Spanaway Lake has a long history of a respectful and dignified ceremony and we know the Class of 2012 and their guests will continue to honor our traditions. We are urging all parents to stress the importance of responsible behavior with their son/daughter. Graduation Ceremony Participation Requirements Met all graduation requirements, including 22.5 credits Completed Culminating Project—(student-led conference and advisory credit) Met standard on the HSPE/EOC or approved alternative o Reading o Writing o Math Tickets Tickets will be distributed beginning June 5th – during lunches (in front of the cafeteria/commons), and before and after school. Only students who have passed their SLC, are on-track in all classes and have earned all graduation requirements will be allowed to purchase tickets. Eligible seniors may purchase additional tickets for $5.00 each. Each person, including babies and small children, must have a ticket. Parking $10.00 per vehicle located in A, D, F, and G Lots. E and K Lots are still available for our disabled patrons. Family members, guests, and spectators will enter the dome at the Upper C doors at the southwest corner. Spectators may begin entering the

Tacoma Dome at 6:15 PM. Graduates should arrive no later than 6:15 PM.. Tacoma Dome security personnel will monitor spectators as they enter, especially targeting helium products and noisemakers.

Dress Code All graduates must have a cap and gown. Females Dress, skirt, or dress pants & dress shirt and appropriate dress shoes (no flip-flops).

Males Dress shirts and ties – dark slacks and dark dress shoes.

All Students No jeans, khakis, or shorts. No casual sandals, flip-flops, tennis shoes, running shoes, etc. No decorations of any kind can be worn with cap and

gown other than medals and honor cords awarded through SLHS (no leis, flowers, sashes, etc). Any student inappropriately dressed will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony. Photographers We will have a professional photographer at the Tacoma Dome to capture your student as they make their way across the stage. Graduates will be able to order pictures directly off the internet. Family photographers are not permitted on the floor of the Tacoma Dome. An area on the second level has been designated as an area to photograph/video tape the ceremony.

2nd Semester Finals Schedule Seniors - June 2012

Bethel School District Required Summer Reading As part of the High Schools That Work program, students in

the Bethel School District are assigned a novel to read over the summer. Students will participate in an assignment related to the novel in September when they return to school. This is a required assignment for Advisory which is a graduation requirement.

12th Grade Reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, sets out from his home in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of buried treasure, but through his encounters with a Gypsy, woman, a man who calls himself a king, and an Alchemist, he learns the value of the treasures found within himself.

11th Grade Reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen accidentally becomes a contender in the annual Hunger Games, a grave competition hosted by the Capitol where young boys and girls are pitted against one another in a televised fight to the death.

9th Grade Reading Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen Fifteen-year-old Cole, trying to avoid prison, agrees to participate in a sentencing alternative based on the Native American Circle Justice, and is sent to a remote Alaskan Island where an encounter with a huge Spirit Bear changes his life.

10th Grade Reading Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Tally is faced with a difficult choice when her new friend Shay decides to risk life on the outside rather than submit to the forced operation that turns sixteen year olds into gorgeous beauties, and realizes that there is a whole new side to the pretty world that she doesn't like.
