SLAVERY OF PEOPLE

Resulted from debt-slavery punishment for crime child abandonment birth of slave children to slaves enslavement of prisoners of war

BUYING AND SELLING OF SLAVES

Buying and Selling slaves was carried on at irregular intervals. Trading usually took place at the home of the slave owner.

For a full grown, robust negro boy, the price was sometimes as much as one thousand dollars. The prices paid was varied according to the age, the general health and other conditions of the individual.

SOUTHERN STATE

In the early 1600s, People were getting more slaves in the South where large plantations grew cotton and other crops. These plantations needed many workers to take care of the farms, however they did not have enough man power for the tasks, thus resorted to buying slaves.

Some people thought that slavery was wrong, while the majority of them thought that slavery was acceptable. Few slaves could marry, have a family, testify in court, or own properties legally

ORIGIN OF THE SLAVES

Slaves in Southern States were known to have originated from Native America (Dark-Skinned Americans,

although there are a few white skinned slaves)

Most slaveholders were white People thought that large groups of slaves

would work more efficiently if directed by white men

Required a lot of money Had to pay money for the slaves and

ensure they were in working condition, although they earned high profits from owning slaves

TREATMENT OF SLAVES

Slave owners maintained separate housing quarters for his slaves. Sometimes the living quarters of slaves

was comfortable and agreeable. Some masters were reasonably gentle to their slaves

In other cases, living conditions of slaves were poor and unhygienic and the slave owners were cruel.

RELEASED SLAVES

Some slaves were able to make money to free themselves, while others were freed due to their owners releasing them However, most of them, soon returned to their

old masters They found that their former home was a

much better place to abode than anything outside of it.

RULES OF SLAVES

They had to abide the rules which white people did not have to, such as They could not gather in groups of 4 or more, their

owners thought they would plan an escape They could not leave their owners property without

a written pass, their owners wanted to control them They could not own weapons as they might shoot

their owner They were not allowed to learn to read or write as

they might start to think about freedom and escape

HOW DOES SLAVERY RELATE TO THE NOVEL “TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”

In slavery, slaves were discriminated and had to follow many rules which white people did not have to

In the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird”, Tom Robinson, the negro, had to go to jail because a white man had accused him of raping his daughter

This shows that slaves and Negros did not have equal rights. In the novel, even though the accusation was false, Tom Robinson still had to go to jail as he was dark-skinned and because a white man had sued him.

HOW DOES STUDYING SLAVERY HELP ME UNDERSTAND TO NOVEL BETTER

Slavery and the story line of the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” are very similar as they both talk about discrimination. Slaves are not treated equally as they are considered as “lesser beings” to other people and Negros are dark-skinned, thus they have lesser rights to white skinned people.
