The Next MNORN Member Meeting will be held Tuesday, December 15th at 6PM at the Carondelet Center in Saint Paul.

Topic: an Update on What is Being Done To Advance Health Equity in Minnesota.

Our speaker will be ThaoMee Xiong JD, MPH. ThaoMee is the director of the Center for Health Equity at the MN Department of Health. She previously held the position of policy director with the Minnesota Housing Partnership. She has experience in professional legal advocacy and public policy on issues related to poverty, immigration, refugee resettlement, domestic violence, housing,

What is Health? From WHO 1948 and Ottawa Charter for Health 1986

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of

living.”

Celebrating MNORN Members this Month!

MNORN President, Jennifer Tucker, gave birth to baby Grace late last month, shortly after the lunar eclipse. Here she is meeting her big sister, Lydia.

- Mary Tanner has been reappointed as Chair of the ANA Reference Committee.

- Judy Vansiea and Doris Hill have just been appointed to the Minority Fellowship Program National Advisory Committee.

Here is some information about the Minority Fellowship Program: For almost three decades, the Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) of the American Nurses Association (ANA) has been engaged in the challenge of reshaping the profile of nurse leaders in research, clinical practice, and academia. The efforts of the MFP have resulted in an increase in the numbers of ethnic/minority nurses who have expertise in psychiatric/mental health nursing. About 266 MFP Fellows with earned doctorates help to document the program's success in increasing the needed diversity across all domains of the profession.

The MFP is governed by a National Advisory Committee dedicated to advising MFP staff; developing partnerships with professional, academic, and clinical institutions; and soliciting support by individuals and groups for the initiative. The Committee's efforts strengthen the MFP by building sustainable infrastructure and long term partnerships while expanding our presence into more communities across the nation.

To learn more about the Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program, go to http://www.emfp.org

- Deborah Haagenson, president of the MN Board of Nursing, was awarded the prestigious Elaine Ellibee Award for a board president who has made a significant contribution to NCSBN at the NCSBN Annual Delegate Assembly in August. https://www.ncsbn.org/8222.htm

The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) are partnering to convene the time-limited Palliative and Hospice Nursing Professional Issues Panel to promote the integration of palliative and hospice care into U.S. healthcare delivery systems.

Potential products of this intense professional work effort might include:

• a relevant joint ANA-HPNA position statement

• an educational resources or toolkit

• a collection of references identifying nursing’s contributions in palliative and hospice care in today’s US healthcare environment

• accompanying framework of necessary changes in nursing practice and education to promote enhanced access and use of palliative and hospice services.

The Panel is projected to begin its work by December 2015 and end by September or October 2016.

Panel members selected for the Steering Committee will conduct deliberations via twice monthly 2-hour telephone and internet-based meetings, possibly supplemented with additional small group conference call activities and writing projects to inform the process.

All other applicants will be engaged via contributions and discussions in a dedicated online Community. ANA membership is required. Please access the member application process, including submission of curriculum vitae or resume here. Forward any questions to [email protected].

Panel member applications will be accepted until midnight on Oct. 30.
