Typical dumping situation at the slag yard

The slag industry plays a considerablerole in the system of steel production. Inglobal steel work operations, millions oftonnes of slag are created by converters,electric furnaces and different typesof residual slag. The great challenge isto transport this slag safely, quickly andefficiently. This slag must be transportedto the slag processing area withoutaffecting operations in the steel works.

The different operating conditions aroundthe world – such as limitations in height and width, space-restricted pick-up situa-tions, slag pots not standardised, etc. –require individual, economic productsolutions in the project phase already.

Transporters are needed that can beadapted perfectly to the conditionsprevailing in the area of slag transportation,which are tough on men and machines,such as temperatures up to 1,600° C,high payloads, three-shift operation andrestrictions on the routes to be travelled.

THE TECHNICAL CONCEPT.

SLAG TAURUS P OR U?The Slag Taurus is always a tailor-madesystem for your special job site appli-cations. The decision whether P for plat-form or U for U-frame depends on theinfrastructure of the respective job site.Road layouts, cycle time requirements,height restrictions under the furnace, the design of the dumping station or theslag pot – all this influences the decisionwhether the P version or the U versionis the optimal design for you. We havedeveloped a modular system for bothtypes of carriers and have already realisedinnovative ideas for the customisation of the Slag Taurus worldwide for manycustomers.

THE SLAG TAURUS PThe Slag Taurus platform type is at home where roads are narrow. The low

overall width enables the Slag Taurus Pto replace existing railway transportationand to be adapted to existing transfercars and other pick-up situations. If it is provided with an additional dumpingdevice, its dumping angle increases to up to 180 degrees, thus ensuring ingeneral the complete emptying of theslag pot without problems.

THE SLAG TAURUS UThe Slag Taurus U-frame type is athome where roads are wide and pick-up heights are restricted or low. The characteristic U-frame form offersoptimal visibility and assures fast cycletimes due to short hydraulic lifts. Thedumping angle of the Slag Taurus is upto 130 degrees. The complete empty-ing is ensured by means of a hydraulicknocking device.

CONVENTIONAL DUMPING SYSTEM:FOR OPTIMAL FLEXIBILITYThe conventional dumping system con-sists of the main dumping arms and an additional dumping system actuated by means of hydraulic cylinders. Theoperation of main and additional dump-ing device can always be adaptedthrough re-positioning of sensors andre-programming of the system. Later

modifications due to changes in infra-structure are possible with very little orzero modification expenses. No matterwhether a new transfer car is to be used,additional pick-up positions are to beapproached or whether the dumping operation is to be modified – this dumping system offers optimal flexibilityon the site.

LEVER LINKAGE DUMPING SYSTEMFOR SHORTER CYCLE TIMESThe lever linkage dumping system offers easiest and fastest operation: the additional dumping angle of up to180 degrees is achieved by a mechani-cal connection of the main dumping arm and the additional dumping system.Thanks to an advantageous lever

system the diameter of the main dumping cylinders can be kept low, thusoffering additional speed advantages.Due to the mechanical linkage the dumping of a slag pot is a much simpleroperation.

In regards to dumping systems, standardsolutions or pure cost orientation are not always the decisive factor. Specialconditions on site should always be takeninto consideration. The Slag Taurus offersthe optimal solution for every specialdumping requirement – whether maxi-mum flexibility for different pick-up anddump positions is required, or slag potswith a low centre of gravity are used, or whether fast cycle times or simpleoperation are especially called for.

KISS – KIROW INTEGRATEDSAFETY SYSTEMAn integral part of each Slag Taurus is the patented KISS – Kirow IntegratedSafety System. KISS means: all carrierfunctions are monitored by a highlyreliable industrial PLC system, thusincreasing operational safety andpreventing possible malfunctions anddamages effectively.

For example, KISS prevents the lockingdevice being actuated in areas where it is not permitted or that pots which are too heavy are picked up. This is very important, because such operatingerrors can cause severe accidents.

Our customers use the active loadindicator in the cabin for their analyses.The driver is informed about the realload transported when picking up thepot or gets a warning signal or lockingis effected as soon as the criticalweight is reached.

It goes without saying that we will specifythe control concept together with you,exactly in accordance with your re-quirements. Because it is modular, thesoftware can be adapted to any specificoperation. Later modifications are alsoeasily possible with little expense.

THE PATENTED SUPPORT SYSTEMThe Slag Taurus P's patented supportsystem is a major factor contributing to itsoperational safety. In all situations – in parti-cular at the dumping station – the internalhydraulic support cylinder is fully protectedagainst heat and slag splashes. This effectively prevents damage and failures.

As integral parts of the frame, the telescopic supports are extremely robustlybuilt. The bearing load is transmitted from the extended support leg into thevehicle frame via large-sized sliding plates.

At all times the driver receives informationin the cabin regarding the status of thesupport, whether extended or retracted.Moreover, the Slag Taurus is equippedwith an active escape function, assuringthe possibility to drive in cases of emer-gency. This means that the first gear of the drive train is always active, thus allowing the driver to get out of harm’sway, even with outriggers extended.

THE FULLY HYDRAULIC BRAKESThe Slag Taurus is equipped with anunrivalled safe brake. It is superior to all conventional compressed air brakesystems in every regard.

Three separate and completelyhydraulically operated brake circuitsassure minimal risks of failure andhighest safety in operation.

Front and rear axle(s) are split in twoseparate brake circuits. The third brakecircuit is provided for the spring actua-ted parking brake. Hydro-pneumaticaccumulators supply sufficient brakepressure.

The cooling of the brake is also effec-ted hydraulically via an external oilcooling circuit. The brake discs are in a fully enclosed housing in oil and can therefore withstand even extremecontamination.

Due to this almost wear-free braketechnology, the maintenance and repair costs are considerably reducedcompared with drum or disc brakes.

THE SLAG TAURUS ARTICULATEDSTEERINGThe articulated steering is one of themost important components of a slagpot carrier. In case of the Slag Taurus, it is a perfect piece of High Tech.

Steering angles up to +/- 90 degreesassure excellent maneuverability. Theoscillation angle of +/-10 degrees as-sures the optimal ground contact of the front axle and prevents overloading,even in uneven terrain.

All bearings are in failproof pin and bushing design. Wear on the bearingelements cannot cause a standstill of the vehicle as can occur with sphericalbearings or slewing rings. Repair workcan be effected on schedule and, aboveall, quickly.

The extremely robust design of the steelstructure and the use of original CATcomponents means: unique reliabilityand worldwide availability of spare parts.

THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE CABINThe driver’s cabin is located high andsafely below the protective roof in afixed position on the trailing unit. For the driver this means he always has anoptimal overview of his working area, as he is always sitting in the same fixedposition regardless of the steering angle of the tractor unit. This is a con-siderable advantage, in particular whenreversing and picking up the slag pot.When driving forwards, drivers find this arrangement very comfortablebecause lateral accelerations caused by steering movements hardly occur and are barely noticeable.

THE DRIVER’S CABINThe dashboards and operating elementsare arranged strictly in accordance withergonomic principles. The driver’s cabinof the Slag Taurus is equipped with one

control stand in the front and one in the rear. The most important components,such as steering wheel and brake, areavailable in duplicate for driving forwardsand backwards, which ensures optimaloperation of the carrier. In addition, aneffective soundproofing, the air-suspendeddriver’s seat, the diesel fresh-air heatingsystem and the (optional) air conditioningsystem assure optimal comfort. The KISSclear text display constantly keeps thedriver informed of the current vehiclestatus and possible faults. A trouble-shooting menu is always available forquick and simple detection of faults.

SAFE & COMFORTABLE MOUNTINGLADDERSErgonomic, safe and comfortable mounting ladders to the cab and the cabin platform are self evident on theSlag Taurus. High railings, footrests,handholds, guardrails as well as optimalillumination of the work area protect drivers and always permit comfortable,safe access to the working area.

In cases of emergency, fire extinguishersare available at the top of the cabin and below (reachable from ground).Optionally, fire extinguishing systemscan be integrated.

THE OPTIONAL EQUIPMENTWe have a years of experience with cus-tomer-specific requirements of the SlagTaurus – and with different circum-stances under which it works. Based on this experience, we can offer a varietyof reasonable and proven equipmentoptions. For example: chain guards, pre-paration for refractory material, verticalexhaust pipes.

THE HYDRAULIC ENGINE HOODOpen access to the drive components is important in order to be able to carryout maintenance and repair work on the cooling unit, diesel engine, gearboxand hydraulic pumps without problems.To facilitate this, the hydraulically operatedengine hood of the Slag Taurus can be quickly and effortlessly opened up to 80 degrees. Incidentally, the enginehood is fitted with soundproofing materialon the inside, thus considerably reducingnoise already.

THE CABIN’S PROTECTIVE ROOFAn essential component of the Slag Taurusis a stable protection canopy arrangedover a large area above the cabin and the cabin platform. Characteristic features are the large-sized observationwindows – offering optimal rear view and optimal protection at the same time.Optionally the movable slats can be adju-sted electrically and closed completely.

THE PROTECTIVE COVERSOn both the Slag Taurus P and the SlagTaurus U the entire trailing unit is fittedwith extensive protective covers.
