SL Benfica: José Antonio CamachoDate of birth: 8 June 1955Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Real Madrid CFCoaching career: Rayo Vallecano, RCD Espanyol, Sevilla FC, Real Madrid CF (twice), RCD Espanyol, Spain, SLBenfica, SL Benfica

José Antonio Camacho was welcomed back as a returning hero when he was unexpectedly named SL Benfica coachjust one game into the 2007/08 season. He quickly showed why by taking the Lisbon club back into the UEFAChampions League with victory against FC København. The Spanish coach had previously enjoyed a successfulspell with Benfica from 2002 until 2004, signing off with victory against FC Porto in the Portuguese Cup – his firstmajor honour as a coach – before returning to Real Madrid CF, the club where he started his playing career.

Originally a combative left-back, Camacho rose through the youth ranks at Madrid and was comfortable playinganywhere across the back line. He made nearly 600 appearances for the club between 1974 and 1989, winning twoUEFA Cups and playing in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final in 1981. He appeared in two FIFA World Cups– missing out on a third in 1978 through injury – and two UEFA European Championships and was capped a thenrecord 81 times by Spain.

Camacho joined the Madrid coaching team after retiring then enjoyed spells in charge of Rayo Vallecano and RCDEspanyol – both of whom he led into the top flight – and Sevilla FC. He briefly returned to Madrid as coach in 1998but resigned after just 22 days, citing differences with the board. Camacho replaced Javier Clemente as Spain coachin September 1998 and took his country to the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2000™. Under Camacho Spain alsoqualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup but he stepped down after losing a shoot-out to Korea Republic in thequarter-finals. After a two-year stint at Benfica he returned to his beloved Madrid in May 2004 only to resign in Decemberafter a poor start to the season. AC Milan: Carlo AncelottiDate of birth: 10 June 1959Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC MilanCoaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only five people – the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard – tohave lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the mosthighly-regarded coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his secondseason at the AC Milan helm – he would have added a second but for Liverpool FC's stunning fightback two yearslater although he eventually claimed revenge in 2007 – and has added Serie A and Coppa Italia medals to an individualtrophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is proving every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started outat AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemedhim too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding successwhich brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career by leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996 and went on toParma FC who he guided to a second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus and although he never managedto better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro in summer 2001. There he thrived, winning the UEFAChampions League, Coppa Italia and UEFA Super Cup in his second season and adding the Serie A title in 2003/04.He guided the Rossoneri to second in the next two campaigns, although they were subsequently demoted to third in2005/06 following the Italian sporting fraud tribunal. In May 2007 he extended his contract until summer 2010 afterwinning the UEFA Champions League again and guiding Milan to fourth in Serie A.

Whether performing a classical piano piece for an appreciative audience, or refereeing football's superstars in frontof a packed crowd, Herbert Fandel keeps cool and delivers. Stage fright is out of the question. The German, who tookcharge of Sevilla FC's 4-0 UEFA Cup final defeat of Middlesbrough FC in May 2006 a year before orchestrating the2007 UEFA Champions League showpiece when AC Milan beat Liverpool FC 2-1 in Athens, is used to the big occasion, both as a full-time pianist with his own highly successful music school and as one of Europe's leading referees.

Fandel, a father of two who lives in Kyllburg, close to the Luxembourg border, became the first German to take chargeof a one-off UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven. Having started his refereeing career in 1989, he joined the élite band ofBundesliga officials in 1996 and earned his FIFA badge two years later. His break on the international stage came atthe UEFA European Under-16 Championship in 1998 before he travelled to the 1999 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup inSouth Africa. Appointments at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and Sydney Olympics followed in 2000ahead of the step up to FIFA World Cup qualifying in 2002. Fandel also did the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup onhome soil before taking charge of his second German Cup final in three campaigns, with FC Bayern München liftingthe 2005/06 trophy after a 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt. He has also been a UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifyingregular.

UEFA information

Club licensingUEFA has produced a report looking back over four years of its European club licensing scheme. The report, entitledHere to Stay – Club Licensing, is designed to provide a clear picture of what the club licensing system is, what it isnot and how it functions. It is structured into five chapters – including, among other things, the scheme's maincharacteristics, the roles of the member associations and their leagues as the licence granters, and of the club as thelicence applicants, UEFA's role, and the licensing decisions taken over the first four years.

The club licensing system is based on a series of defined quality standards (covering the areas of sporting, infrastructure, personnel, administration, legal and financial matters) which must be fulfilled in order for a club to be admitted to anyUEFA competition. The same minimum criteria apply to all clubs and national associations. The system representsa significant step forward in improving transparency and governance of clubs and demonstrates that football cangovern itself.

Executive Committee meetingThe Swiss city of Lucerne will host the next meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee on Friday 30 November andSaturday 1 December, as part of an exciting weekend for football enthusiasts. With the UEFA EURO 2008™ drawtaking place at the Congress Centre in Lucerne on 2 December from 12.00CET, the Executive Committee, chairedby UEFA President Michel Platini, will gather two days earlier to discuss a wide variety of European football issues.

A decision on the format of the UEFA club competitions for the period between 2009 and 2012 is a key item on theExecutive Committee agenda. Other items on the programme are the designation of the host association for the UEFACongresses in 2009 and 2010; the hosts for the UEFA European Futsal Championship of 2009; the hosts for theUEFA European Under-21 Futsal Championship of 2008; and the hosts for the UEFA Futsal Cup finals in 2008.

Safety conferenceUEFA and the European Union are organising an international conference on 28 and 29 November in Brussels, whichwill look at ways to improve safety and security at sporting events. UEFA General Secretary David Taylor will openthe conference together with the European Commissioner for Sport, Ján Figel, while Michel Platini, UEFA President, and Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the European Commission, will hold a joint press conference on the secondday to announce their plans. UEFA works closely with the EU's Football Safety and Security Experts Group, whichincludes experts from interior ministries, National Football Information Points and police representatives. The conferencewill consider ways of bolstering the partnership between UEFA, governments and police in terms of implementing theEU group's work.

"Developing effective partnerships has enabled some countries in Europe to make huge progress in the last ten yearsor more," said William Gaillard, UEFA director of communications and public affairs. "They have brought together thekey elements of a successful strategy: fence-free, comfortable stadiums where the club itself takes responsibility forsafety in the ground, and where trained stewards look after the fans. The police have a low profile. At the same time, tough judicial measures and effective intelligence-sharing ensure the exclusion of troublemakers and prevent theviolent minority from travelling to games. The result is that the game of football takes centre stage."

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders AC Milan will be keen to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stagesince the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League whenhe featured against Olympiacos on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously heldby Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at theage of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 217 days when he featured against Werder Bremen onMatchday 4. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having foundthe net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos on 23 October 2002.

Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sentoff in the 37th minute.

In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA ChampionsLeague and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all sixgames in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Only five other teams have ever gone through a single group stagecampaign without picking up a point namely SK Rapid Wien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskvaand Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first groupstage).

Levski also conceded 17 goals in their six outings last term, just two short of the record number let in during a groupstage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskvawent 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday3 of the same campaign.

The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for awin was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed withseven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 31 August saw the 32 teams divided intoeight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays onehome and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for adraw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, thefollowing criteria are applied to determine the rankings.a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;e) higher number of goals scored;f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previousfive seasons. The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be playedover two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their groupmove into the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group areeliminated from UEFA club competition for the season. This year's UEFA Champions League final is in Moscow on21 May 2008.

• Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in aUEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case ofrepeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well asfollowing any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensionsare always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the currentseason.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reservedfor players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from withinthe same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required beganat four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the firstknockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remainingmatches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player fromthe above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the currentseason may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFAChampions League this season.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated gross income for the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League is €824.5m– slightly higher than the 2006/07 campaign revenue. Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the totalrevenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will goto the 32 teams taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent isearmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well asfor solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.
