SkyControl™ is a comprehensive element management system (EMS) that implements the FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, and Security) administrative model for SkyPilot mesh networks. To provide automatic and dynamic network visualization, SkyControl integrates with Google Earth™ mapping service to greatly enhance preparation and updates to network diagrams. SkyControl provides complete fault management, performance tuning and monitoring, reporting, and alarming, which are essential features for operators of complex citywide broadband wireless networks that rely on maximizing subscriber satisfaction and take rates to sustain profitable business models.

By utilizing the Google Earth Pro2 client application, administrators can leverage the GPS functionality embedded in SkyPilot infrastructure devices, including SkyGateway series and SkyExtender series, to rapidly generate and update location accurate network maps. Google Earth Pro populates a map using GPS coordinate data generated by SkyControl, relieving administrators from the reliance on manually prepared maps.

Link associations and device types are defined graphi-cally within Google Earth Pro and depict the separa-tion of frequencies by color, providing a feature-rich dia-gram that is customizable to the needs of the network administrator.

Fault Management

SkyControl delivers a robust fault management system with real-time alarm and event reporting. A color coding system visually identifies critical, major, minor and informational alarms, and enables easy methods of handling automatic notifications. With SkyControl, operators have a systematic process for problem detection and rapid issue resolution.

SkyControl’s reporting system provides detailed event logging and includes extensive filtering capabilities to sort and prioritize data.

Configuration Management

SkyControl provides an efficient, centralized method of managing device configuration, which supports over-the-air automatic provisioning and configuration of SkyPilot devices throughout the network. Network management is further enhanced and simplified by the ability to schedule configuration updates and firmware upgrades.

Service profiles may be defined and stored that specify a range of networking, security, and quality of service (QoS) parameters, and SkyControl provides backup and restore capa-bilities for device configuration and subscriber information from the embedded database. Each SkyPilot device is able to store multiple firmware images, and SkyControl’s firmware management can schedule when each device upgrades to a new firmware image.

Performance Management

SkyControl provides advanced topology and graphical performance monitoring capabili-ties, enhanced by integration with Google Earth mapping services. Administrators are able to collect data and generate reports for deployments ranging up to thousands of nodes, providing essential scalability for large municipal and service provider networks.

Using Google Earth Pro, GPS coordinates for each SkyPilot device are plotted instantly to create dynamic network diagrams, which accurately overlay node locations on map terrain, display descriptive data and link performance for each device, and graphically portray link associations between nodes. As the network changes and grows SkyControl scales with the deployment, automatically providing real-time updated diagrams that greatly enhance the accuracy and timeliness of the network monitoring process.

Security Management

Service providers have full control over user management, including the creation of user accounts and user groups, and functional access permissions at both levels. The SkyPilot network fully supports VLAN implementations, and SkyControl allows for the centralized control of user authorization throughout the entire network, including the prevention of rogue association with the wireless network.
