June 2018 Monthly Report, Steve Richer, Director of PR

New club building. Working with President Burcin Turkkan, Vice

President Dave Ryan, and Directors Jim Dwyer and Richard Scinta to

follow upon the nearly three dozen prospective club contacts made at

IPW in Denver, focusing on the mostly like leads first.

Media relations. Prepared additional information on the NASC

meeting and various Skal club community projects for use in both

Skal Magazine and the Skal USA newsletter. I continue to provide

news items to Skal International on Skal USA activities for both the

magazine and SI newsletter on a regular basis.

Skal USA member survey on advocacy issues. A Survey Monkey

request for information on issues affecting business was distributed

to all of our members. 25 responded, which was slightly over 1%.

As it was an open ended survey asking for up to three issues, we

received 28 different items. Those cited by more than one response

were as follows: Visa restrictions and freedom to travel with

security, improvements in transportation infrastructure, funding for

Brand USA and other tourism promotion organizations, and new

restrictions on seasonal migratory labor. All of these topics, except

the last one, have been topics advocated by Skal USA. Others

mentioned which would have broad interest for consideration by Skal

USA would be sustainable tourism strategies, protection of historic

and cultural sites, and the impact of higher national park fees on

tourism sales.

SI Washington. I attended our local club meeting on June 27, where

there was a featured speaker on federal per diem travel rates.

Membership Activity

I’m still working with Ken Walles from Skål Long Island who indicated he’s interested in forming a new

Skål club on the eastern end of Long Island to be called Skål Hamptons. Ken recently opened a bakery in

Montauk which has been frequented by celebrities like Ralph Lauren and Jerry Seinfeld. We wish Ken

and Bozena much success.

I participated on a conference call with Catherine Prather who is going to try to form a new club in

Lexington Kentucky. Burcin, Dave Ryan and I took and answered her questions and advised her to

attend a meeting at the nearby Louisville club to get a feel of how a meeting should be run. Dwayne

Huff from Skål Louisville has been very helpful.

-Still working on setting up meeting with the Nashville Club to discuss their membership. A few things

can be done to assist them as soon as possible. Should be completed in the next week or so.

- Crafted letter which was distributed to all Skal USA members in regards to Young Skal and Young Skal

Professional program. Goal is to create communication and awareness on these programs so that our

clubs continue to focus on growing these where appropriate.

- Made contact with a friend who is interested in starting a Buffalo/Niagara Skal Club. Working to

connect the two of them in July or August to get the wheels in motion.
