Ski Trails The monthly newsletter for Suburban Ski Club July 2019
Website: http://www.suburbanskiclub.org
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Suburban Ski Club Members,
I am delighted to announce that we have finalized our 2020 major
trips. We have a wonderful ski season planned for you. There are
three major trips this year and we expect all three to sell out
quickly. So, please send in your reservation soon if you want to
ensure a spot. Later this week we will open up enrollment to the
Greater Cleveland ski community on CMSC’s website:
www.skicleveland.com.
On Saturday, January 25 we fly to Reno, Nevada and then shuttle
to Mammoth Mountain, California to a resort aptly named for its
massive 3,500 acres of skiable terrain and a 3,100 ft vertical drop.
We have secured condos with ski-in/ski-out access to the Eagle Lodge lift and a free shuttle service
to take us to the other four major base areas and into town. Mammoth Mountain gets plenty of
snow and its season runs from November through August. So, January conditions should be very
good. We are grateful to Melinda Kellerstrass for leading this trip.
On Sunday, February 23 we return to Sunday River and Sugarloaf, Maine. The bargain trip
price of $1,049 includes daily hot breakfasts and dinners, a ski lesson, ski-in/ski-out lodging and
much more. Our club went to these resorts last year and everyone had such a great time we decided
to go again. Thanks, again, to Joe Sullivan for planning and leading this trip.
On Saturday, March 21 we are off to Telluride, Colorado to my personal, all-time favorite ski
location. Telluride has breath-taking views, fantastic skiing, and a great little town. Telluride gets
lots of snow via the famous “Telluride Cloud” and skiing conditions are usually excellent well into
April. I am leading this trip and have already sold out about a third of the spots.
There is a summary of these three major trips in a text box on the next page. In addition, please
see the trip flyers attached to the Email that brought this newsletter.
Again, please be aware that in just a few days we will be announcing these three major trips to the
general skiing public. As a member of SSC, you have the opportunity to sign up first but this period
of advance notice is ending soon. Don’t be shut out.
Thanks to John and Susan Hersch for hosting our June EAT at the Astoria Café & Market in
Gordon Square last Tuesday, June 25th. Over twenty SSC members attended and enjoyed pre-
dinner cocktails on the outdoor patio before dining on entrees from an extensive and creative menu
Page 2 of 10
featuring Greek cuisine. We also need to thank Melinda Kellerstrass for organizing several
outdoor activities in June that including hiking, biking and paddling. She has done it again for this
month of July. Check out the offerings later in this pages and see some photos from last month.
Ann McBrian is again hosting a wonderful evening for us at Blossom Music Festival on Sunday,
July 7th. We will assemble for a pre-concert picnic. Peter and Paul from the Peter, Paul and Mary
trio will join our Cleveland Orchestra to perform some memorable songs from their past repertoire.
If you act quickly, it is not too late to sign up. See the details in this newsletter and the attachments
that came in the Email that brought you the newsletter.
Last but not least, we are pleased to welcome Ron Friedberg to our Executive Board as a Member-
at-Large. We thank him for generously volunteering his time and look forward to working with
him to continue to grow our vibrant club.
Beth Silverman, President of SSC

UPCOMING EVENTS IN MORE DETAIL
Membership Meetings Resume in September
Meetings are at 7:00 PM in the party room at the Holiday Inn; 780 Beta Drive, Mayfield Village
44143. Beta Drive is only one intersection east of the exit for Wilson Mills Road on I-271.
What follows is a listing of the OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES for JULY:
We are grateful to Melinda Kellerstrass for being the impresario for these events. She
encourages us to join her for some summertime fun on one or more of these excursions. If you
have an idea or would like to sponsor an event, contact Melinda at [email protected].
We are looking for some August activities that we will list in the August newsletter.
After the list of activities, please also enjoy some photos of a some SSC members who participated
in our June events.
Monday, July 1 @ 8:30 AM: Another Hike with Larry and Almuth
We will meet SSC members, Larry Grewe and Almuth Riggs at the Station Road Bridge
Trailhead in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The address is 13512 Station Rd, Brecksville OH.
Since this newsletter will not be published until late on June 30th, you will have to make a quick
decision to go on this July 1st hike.
The plan is to go to Twin Sisters Falls. Based on water levels, we may go to the bottom or top of
these hidden falls – or maybe both top and bottom, if conditions allow.
If you have questions or want to let Larry know you will be there – contact him at
Thursday, July 18 @ 9:30 AM: Biking with Melinda on the Bike N Hike Trail
We will meet at the parking lot on Rt. 303 (64 W Streetsboro Rd.; Boston Hts). Melinda says “This
is my favorite section of the trail. On a hot day it stays cool as you go through the rock cuts. This
trail also passes by Brandywine Falls and we can stop there and enjoy the falls. This will be about
a 15 mile out and back ride, a little over 7 miles each way. You can always turn around whenever
you want. Depending on the abilities of those in the group, we can also turn around at Brandywine
Falls and cut 6 miles off the ride.”
After the ride, we will meet at the Winking Lizard in Peninsula (1615 Main St Peninsula) for
refreshments. Contact Melinda if you plan on coming. She will let you know if the ride is cancelled
due to weather: [email protected]
Saturday, July 20 @ 10:00 AM: Paddle the LaDue
Melinda wants to give this another shot. Last month she had to pull the plug because of windy
conditions – even though Brave Brad Carleton ventured out on his own.
Meet in the parking lot on Rt. 44 about 1 mile south of Rt. 422, just before you cross the bridge.
You can bring your own equipment or rent. If you need to rent, there is a company that services
LaDue. Find them at: https://www.breakawayexcursions.com. Please be aware that you need to
go online and reserve in advance. Make sure to follow the prompts and book for Sat, July 20 at
10:00 AM at LaDue South . You also need to fill out the release forms etc. They do not handle
cash sales and everything needs to be done on line, in advance. Melinda recommends booking
early since they do sell out on weekends.
Melinda says that LaDue is one of her favorite places to paddle. If you have not been there, you
are in for a treat. They only allow electric motors, so it is a peaceful lake. Please Email Melinda if
you plan on attending: [email protected] She will notify you if we need to cancel
again because of the weather.
The following link should take you directly to the LaDue South booking site:

items=yes&flow=14046.
Monday, July 29 @ 9:30 AM: Another Hike with Larry and Almuth
For this second July hike we will meet Larry and Almuth at the Everett Covered Bridge in
Cuyaghoga Valley National Park; 2370 Everett Rd, Peninsula OH.
We will be IN “Furnace Run.” There may be lots of mud and gravel. We suggest closed shoes that
may get very wet. Last year a few wore sandals for this hike and that was a big mistake.
Again, if you have questions about either of these two hikes (July1 and July 29), you can contact
Larry Grewe at [email protected]. Even if you don’t have any questions, you may want
to let Larry know you will attending.

It may appear that Robin
Spooner is showing us a little
leg. Actually, she was using
Lake Erie to wash off the mud
from exploring the wetlands
trail in Mentor Headlands
Robin, again, with her
fellow hikers, Melinda

and Almuth Riggs (in the
center)

On June 4, Larry Grewe
took his hiking group to
some beautiful caves and
rock formations in West
Woods Park.

Undeterred by the windy
conditions, the brave Brad
Carleton had a grand time
paddling his kayak on the LaDue
on June 8th.
Here we find Melinda
Kellerstrass at the
headwaters of the
Cuyahoga River on June
17th. She braved a cloudy
day on the Maple
Highlands Bike Trail and
had a fantastic day (with
no rain!) and saw lots of
wildlife.

Sunday, July 7: Picnic and Concert at Blossom
Sunday, July 7, 2019
Concert: 7:00 PM Pre-Concert Picnic: 4:30 PM
You still have a couple of days to join us as Ann McBrian will again be our host for an evening
at Blossom with a pre-concert picnic. Read below for all the details you will need.
At this concert, Peter Yarrow and (Noel) Paul Stookey of the iconic folk trio of Peter, Paul and
Mary will join the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Lucas Richman. It will be a special evening
of nostalgia as Peter and Paul remember the late Mary Travers and their enduring anthems of social
change and the impact they had on the world of civil liberties.
Although the concert begins at 7:00 PM, we will be gathering any time after 4:30 PM for our pre-
concert picnic in the area called the Lawn Terrace (located at the top of the hill and centered
above the pavilion). Ann will be taking orders for a barbeque buffet provided by City Barbeque
and/or salads prepared by Panera Bread. Please see the Order Form for details.
Attached is an ORDER FORM to place your order for lawn tickets and your meal. But you
should feel free to bring your own picnic if you wish. Beverages are not provided and you may
bring your beverage of choice.
Also please note that the Order Form is attached in two versions. Those of you who have access
to Excel spreadsheet software, can use that version to fill out your order form. Others can print
out the PDF version. Mail the form and payment to Ann McBrian at the address on the attached
page of GENERAL INFORMATION. And there is yet another option by going online to
https://www.suburbanskiclub.org/cleveland-orchestra-concert-blossom-music-center and placing
Page 10 of 10
your order using your credit card for payment. If you are ordering food for more than one person,
be sure to follow the online directions.
Parking is free with tram service provided to get you to the main gate. Ann advises you come
early to beat the traffic and parking rush.
A single lawn ticket price for the evening is $22.60. But Ann is hoping to buy books of lawn tickets
at a savings of $5.10 per ticket. Provided we are able to purchase the books, refunds on the tickets
will be given the night of the concert. Should you not want to sit on the lawn, lawn tickets are also
valid for general admission seating in the pavilion. Your tickets will be held in your name at the
“Will Call” window. See more details in the attached pages of GENERAL INFORMATION
and MAP of Blossom.
Orders must be received by Thursday, July 4th. If you have any questions, you may contact Ann
at: [email protected] or (330) 618-8450.
SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY AT PROGRESSIVE FIELD:
Bill Littel, partner of SSC Member, Michele Boim, hosted a surprise birthday party for Michele
in a party suite at the ball park on June 22nd. Many of Michele’s friends attended and they included
both alumni and current members of Suburban Ski Club. Bill wanted to be sure to recognize their
good friend, Don Nikolai, who was very helpful to Bill in organizing the event and keeping it a
surprise.
It was really a surprise. Here Bill and Michele
enter the party suite.
