Get Loose with Lance - May Social Article By Lance
For April, we had wine tasting at the Wine Crush. The following Members attended, (ed
note: they also: participated, and otherwise updated each other on the state of the local
area, as they see it): Barbara and Peter Ream, Mike Zulu, Cynthia Carter, Kris Flaig,
Craig Gibson, Roberto Tovar, Kathy Adler, Alan Reiss, and myself. I may have missed
one other, please excuse me. It sucks getting old. Everyone brought appetizers to
share. The evening weather was perfect.
On Saturday, May 20th, we have our Annual Dinner-Dance at Malarkey’s. We will have a
Hawaiian theme. Ladies get out your best moo moo dress and men wear our best Aloha
shirt. An attached flyer with details is in the breeze for your review. Please select your
entrée ASAP and send that (choice) to me with your RSVP.
In June, we will have another Wine Tasting, probably 5 pm, Saturday, June 17th at Bistro
St. Germaine in Seal Beach. For July and August, we will have our annual barbecues.
Watch for flyers in this and upcoming Ski Breezes. I hope everyone is enjoying Spring
Skiing as well as other activities. I put my skis away and await next ski season and more
winter storms.
ALOHA TO EVERYONE !!

Craig’s Crag … By Craig Gibson, Race VP and Membership Chair
Racing
With all four ULLR races being cancelled due to weather, it was a pleasant surprise to
have blue skies and great snow conditions for the Far West Championships. On April 1
and 2, three of our LBSC members stepped up to the starting gate and did quite well.
Here are the results:
Race 1 Slalom April 1
Racer Class Place Points Strike?
Ken Kawahara S4VM 6 1 No
Brian Maloney S5VM 1 25 No
Roberto Tovar S7VM DNF/DNS 0 No
Race 2 GS April 2
Racer Class Place Points Strike?
Ken Kawahara S4VM 7 12 No
Brian Maloney S5VM 1 25 Yes
Roberto Tovar S7VM 1 25 No
For details please visit http://www.slracing.org/results/217/FarWests/.
Membership
If the Dow can pass the 20,000 mark, there is no reason the LBSC cannot pass the 90
mark. Here are the facts:
June 1, 2014 62 members
June 1, 2015 71 members
June 1, 2016 90 members
Today 89 members
Can we recruit two more members by June 1? If so, that will put us on a four-year
trajectory of continuous membership growth!

2017 April Ski Week Article or Mark’s Mark By Shep & Tara, with Mark Malan this month
Sitting in my room at the Mammoth Quality Inn, 4/23/17, thinking over that I didn’t get to ski today made me truly enjoy the ease of week-long group travel. On this solo trip for 3 days, I got to experience the car dying and being towed 30 miles into town. As luck would have it, the garage is across the hwy from the hotel, so this is not a whining session. I’m at Mammoth.
This year the club went to Big White in Canada. The trip was a gas as we were with 3 other clubs. The size allowed us to have fine après ski parties, slalom races, and incredible tubing. Group travel motivates skiers to do things outside their norm and meet other skiers. However, Mammoth had better snow.
Then, the club went to Bormio, Italy. Six Thousand vertical feet… wow! No wonder they are downhill champs…they have real steeps. There were other nearby resorts with inter-changeable lift tickets and nobody will forget the day trip to San Moritz, Switzerland. Again, Mammoth still had better snow.
You never know in advance where the white lumpy rain will land. These week-long travels serve to not only show us alternatives the our own mountains, they are special gifts that let us hang with other skiers ( & some cool riders) and share dream-like memories. The Florence add-on to the ski trip included a day of wine tasting just outside of Siena in Tuscany. While I “Live to Ski”, I would cash in multiple ski days to have another Italian hillside wine tasting tour day.
It is impossible to pick the resort in summer that will be graced with abundant powder six months later. There is talk now of a Banff ski trip, others speak of someone in the LA Council promoting a Three-Valleys trip in France. Stay tuned… I’ll have more info soon. In early June, as part of the learning curve of becoming the VP of week-long trips I will be attending the FWSA travel symposium in Boise, ID. I want to make sure that the club continues to get great offerings to participate in. Good trips offer a club benefit as well as give us a reason to motivate other winter-lovers to join the Long Beach Ski Club. I am learning from Shep, so that the club continues as a strong provider for its members. In another lifetime three decades ago (ed note: Mark must have started that job as a teenager!), I was a tour operator of ski trips, so the combination of my prior experience and the superior tutelage of today’s market, supplied by Shep, lends me to believe that the Long Beach Ski Club will have an awesome 2017-18 destination travel season.
Stay Tuned in June for a Travel Update,
Mark Malan
Hope to see all of you on May 3rd at the LBSC General Meeting at Ecco’s for Pizza @ 7:00 PM.

Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar
Well this weekend is an off the book trip to Mammoth. I am looking forward to
another weekend of skiing. Who knows how long this season is going to last! The
snow level at the Main Lodge is still up to the second floor balcony. If more requests
are made, maybe we can go again!
Some members have already hung up their skis, so it may be time for some spring and
summer fun.
