We are in Group 1. Our group members are Lee Hoi Kei, Kwong Lok Yiu, Lee Man Tsun, Ho Chi Yan, He Jian Fung and Sum Chi Chung. We have interviewed twenty-nine tourists. They were kind and friendly. We enjoyed this activity very much.

Most of the tourists came from mainland China and Europe.

According to our interviews with the tourists, we found that they also like seeing Chinese culture. Hence, we would like to suggest an attractive spot, “Cheung Chau”.

Cheung Chau Island

This tiny dumbbell-shaped island is one of the most densely populated islands in Hong Kong with many of its villagers still clinging to old traditions.

It takes only about 30 minutes or an hour to go to Cheung Chau by taking fast ferry and ordinary ferry respectively, from the No.5 pier in Central. Cheung Chau has an environment which is free from motor traffic; people here ride bicycle as the sole source of transportation. You can rent bicycles and ride along the coast and the main roads. When you visit Cheung Chau, you can also take the ‘Wala Wala’ near the pier.

Highlights

The Bun Festival is held in Cheung Chau in late March/early April of the Lunar Calendar. It is held to appease the gods that guard the island and to placate the hungry ghosts of pirates' victims that are believed to be roaming the island in search of food.

In the festival procession, child performers dressed in ancient god costumes are suspended by rods and wires.

Less obvious to the visitor is a small cave at the western tip of the island, reputed to be the hiding place of one of the area's most famous pirates, Cheung Po Tsai.

Cheung was the son of a fisherman, who was captured by Cheng Yat, a pirate chief. Invigorated by this lifestyle, Cheung rose to become the head of the pirates. He is believed to have built up an army of some 20,000 men along the coast.

One of his favourite hiding spots was a small cave on Cheung Chau that you can still visit today. Some people believe that Chung hid his booty in the cave; but none has ever been found.

Take the ferry from the outlying island ferry pier in Central to Cheung Chau. Once you arrive, you can rent a kai to (small motorised ferry) right beside the ferry pier for HK$10 - $15 per person for a one-way trip to the cave. The trip takes 5-10 minutes. Or you can walk from the Cheung Chau ferry pier (head to the right) and follow the coastline for about 25 minutes. The cave is right near the Sai Yuen Farms.

On 19th March, 2005, I felt very happy. I could not imagine that the tourists would be so kind. That day, my classmate and I helped each other to interview the tourists. We spoke in English. We met many tourists from the USA. They were very beautiful because their eyes were bigger than ours. I want to do more interviews. He Jian Fung (8) P.5Bp.m.

On 19th March,2005, my classmates, my teachers and I went to the Peak. That day, we went to the Peak by school bus.We wore our school uniform.We started at one o’clock. The tourists were nice.They were eager to do our surveys. We felt very happy.We think they will come to Hong Kong again.

On 19th March, 2005, I felt very excited because I went to the Peak. We did some questionnaires. The tourists were very kind. There were six people in my group. My classmates were very friendly, so we enjoyed doing the interviews . In this project, I can learnt a lot of things. I made some new friends too. I was really enjoyable.

I liked doing this project because it was fun. We went the Peak and collected information from tourists. I learnt a lot of things in this project. I think it was difficult for us to do it on the computer. We had to make a bar chart and a power point.

As I did the project, I learned a lot. I also learned what co-operation was. It was so easy to find the data from the Internet. I liked this project very much. It was exciting! I am interested in doing another project like this. It has been really good for developing our study skills.

On 19th March,2005, we went to the Peak and did surveys with tourists. I remember that these tourists were very friendly. They helped me to finish the questionnaires. They took photos with me too. I liked this activity very much because it was meaningful. I learnt to be brave from this activity. It also improved my English and Mandarin. I hope that there will be a similar activity for us to do next year.
