RULES & CRITERIA FOR COMPETITION ELIMINATIONS COMPETITION CATEGORY Group. A group consists of a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 16 members. The members of the group may be made up of all males or females or a combination of males and females. There will be two (2) categories in the competition: College and High School College. All bonafide regular, undergraduate level college students (i.e. first course and have not yet earned a college degree) of the respective participating schools. The representing group must be accredited by the school’s appropriate accrediting body (i.e. Office of Student Affairs). High School. The representing group must be accredited by the school’s appropriate accrediting body (i.e. Office of Student Affairs). Only one (1) group may represent a school. In the event that more than one group from the same school would like to join the competition, the involved parties must secure endorsement from the Office of Student Affairs or counterpart body that their group is the official entry of the school. ** Groups are allowed to change or add to their line up of dancers for the competition provided the organizer is informed 2 weeks prior to their elimination schedule by submitting a formal letter stating the reason for the line-up change. New members must submit the same requirements required during the registration (i.e. photocopy of school Id (front and back), photocopy of enrolment form, and letter of approval from the group moderator or school administrator) *** In the event that a group suffers an injury less than 2 weeks prior to the competition, the group may replace the injured member provided the organizer is given a medical certificate and original copies of requirements. No group will be allowed to perform if they do not meet the required minimum of 10 members. **** Any complaint regarding competing groups will be entertained by the organizer provided said concern is formalized through a letter stating basis for the complaint. Any group found to have violated any ruling such as submitting falsified documents will be disqualified from the competition and necessary legal actions will be applied.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH MEMBER OF PARTICIPATING GROUPS

College Category

Photocopy of School ID with picture shown

Photocopy of enrolment form

Letter of approval from group moderator and school administrator

Medical Certificate from School Physician or Private Doctor

Accomplished Registration Form

HS Category

During the elimination rounds, groups will be asked to bring their members’ original IDs and

enrolment forms for the College and HS categories for on-site verification.

ROUTINE LENGTH

The routine must be a total of four minutes (4:00).

A grace period of plus or minus (+/-) five seconds (:05) is permitted resulting in a minimum 3:55

and a maximum 4:05. Pre-performance display is permissible up to 20 seconds allowing the group to acknowledge the

audience and to get into the opening pose.

Timing of the pre-performance begins when the first group member steps on stage.

Timing of the routine begins with the first audible sound and ends with the last audible sound

(this includes a cuing beep, if used).

Failing to comply with the routine length will result in a 5-point deduction.

** In the event of technical problems that affect a group’s performance, the group will be allowed a do-over or repeat of their routine.

MUSIC

Groups may use a performance piece with a minimum of two (2) songs with no maximum

limit. Groups must submit their final material on CD (2 copies) 2 days prior to the

competition. Special requests regarding playback of music during the competition must be indicated on the

CDs submitted (i.e. higher speed playback, pre-set before playback, etc.). Changes in music will not be entertained after said deadline. No CDs will be accepted on the day of the competition.

Cassette tapes are not allowed.

Group representatives are not allowed in the control booth during performance.

Music submitted on CD will be converted to digital format to ensure errorless playback during

competition. CDs will be brought to the competition venue as back-up.

MAKE SURE THAT AUDIO LEVELS ARE AT THE NORMAL BASELINE WHEN HAVING

YOUR MUSIC MIXED DOWN TO AVOID EXTREMELY LOUD AND DISTORTED PLAYBACK

COMPETITION PERFORMANCE AREA

In all elimination legs, the stage area will be 16x24 feet.

ATTIRE AND PROPS

Groups should wear clothing reflecting the character and style of the performance.

This may include accessories such as hats, caps, gloves, scarves, jewelry and other forms of

theatrical dress. However, bead necklaces, bracelets, or other accessories made of beads are prohibited.

Taking off pieces of clothing during the performance is permitted provided it is not offensive or

out of character.

Props may be allowed in the performance as long as it doesn’t destroy the stage set up or

flooring or those that may harm other groups’ performance (e.g. hand props or head gears.) Body oils, body paints, body and hair glitters are prohibited as is any other substance applied to

the body that may affect the clean dry surface of the stage and the safety of fellow competitors.

All participants are highly encouraged to wear Skechers footwear for the eliminations and finals.

In the event that participants will not be wearing Skechers footwear during their performance,

non-branded or generic looking shoes should be worn. Participants are discouraged from wearing footwear and clothing with prominent logos aside from

the Skechers logo. In the event shoes or clothing worn bear prominent logos, participants must cover these with masking tape.

All footwear must have clean, non-scuff soles (street shoes and street boots are not acceptable).

No taps or bare feet are permitted.

DAY OF ELIMINATION

On the day of their scheduled elimination competition, groups will draw lots to determine the chronology of performances. Drawn spots are final, no changes will be entertained.

Practice and Blocking

Each group will be given 7 minutes each to practice on the day of their competition using the stage area.

All groups are requested to be at the venue at least 4 hours before the start of the show.

General Meeting

Participating schools will be called to a General Assembly (schedule to follow) to discuss the mechanics,

criteria, other concerns, and to draw lots for the assignation of elimination venues.

ROUTINE EVALUATION – TOTAL POSSIBLE SCORE IS 10 POINTS

I. ARTISTIC MERIT = 60% or six points of the total score

The HipHop Competition will reward group choreography incorporating popping, locking, break dancing, funk, break dancing, street, jazz, club dance, and other dance forms

performed with HipHop style and attitude. Dancing forms with traditional dance lines such as ballroom, traditional jazz, ballet, tap, modern, etc. will not be rewarded.

Choreography (30%)

Variety and Repetition - 10 The ability of the group to perform a broad selection of complex moves from the HipHop

style without excessive use of the same move or pattern. A range of styles should be shown in the choreography of arm, leg and body movements, and the choreography must include a

minimum of three(3) formation changes within the group and a minimum of three (3)

different levels of movements (low/mid/high). More than four (4) revolutions of any move for any member of the group is considered repetitive.

Spacing/Formations/Patterns - 10

The group must demonstrate awareness of spacing between the members and full utilization

of the stage while forming a range of unique, complicated and challenging formations, interactive partner moves and patterns. The full use of the stage will also be considered.

Transitions/Level Changes/Planal Changes - 10

The routine should demonstrate a minimum of three (3) levels of movement (low/mid/high) utilizing arm, hand, leg, foot, torso and head movements in three planes: front/back

(sagital), side (frontal) and rotational (transverse) planes integrated with a variety of unique

and unpredictable transitions and linking movements.

Musicality (20%)

Judges award for various attributes corresponding to timing and music usage and the group’s

ability to perform simultaneously to the music. Deductions will be made for timing errors and solo performances beyond four (4) counts. A minimum of two (2) recognizable songs and an

unlimited maximum are allowed. Movements and patterns performed to the simulated sounds of the group members in the absence of recorded music (e.g. foot stomping, hand

clapping, vocals, etc.) will be considered musicality and judged similarly.

Beat Technique/Syncopation - 20

The movements within the routine must demonstrate musical structure on style, i.e., using rhythmic variations emphasizing upbeat, downbeat, tempo and accents in single, double,

halftime and syncopated musical patterns. Showmanship (10%)

Confidence, Projection and Presence – 10 Projection of the group members is consistently strong throughout the entire routine with an

uninterrupted display of confidence measured by facial expression, eye contact and body movement. The group members and their routine should connect with the audience and

evoke emotional responses, i.e., excitement, joy, laughter, involvement and/or sense of drama relative to the style presented.

II. TECHNICAL MERIT = 40% or four points of the total score

The judges will evaluate the style of movements in the routine and the execution of the style(s), e.g. popping, locking, funk, street, etc. The judges will consider the quality of

movement throughout the routine, including arm, leg and body placement and

synchronization of the group members.

Execution/Controlled Mobility and Stabilization - 20 The group must maintain control of the speed, direction, momentum and placement of all

movements.

Synchronization - 10

The movements of the group members are performed in sync; the range of movement, speed, timing and execution of moves are performed by all members in unison.

Intensity - 10

The routine contains dynamic movements from beginning to end and contains minimal

pauses and poses.

III. LIST OF DEDUCTIONS
