Yes, even at my age a new experience is possible! This past week included many meetings, one in which I have never participated previously: a full meeting of the parish civil corporation. Only in the last few years has the Diocese informed pastors that the parish civil corporation must meet at least once a year. In the State of Minnesota, a parish civil corporation is composed of five members: the Bishop, who is the president; the Vicar General, the vice president; the pastor, the secretary; and the two trustees. The last couple years we have been meeting without the Bishop and Vicar General, which is still a quorum, but this year we had a Zoom meeting for both parish civil corporations. There was a little extra work for the secretary (yes, me) and the parish staff, but we were able to gather almost all the important documentation needed. Bishop Quinn and Father Will Thompson, the Vicar General, were very complimentary about the current condition of our parishes. As we looked for different civil documents, it became clear that we could use a parishioner with some legal and/or archival expertise to help us put our files and archives in better order. If you qualify and are interested in helping, please let Nicole or me know. It would be much appreciated.

Sometimes people are hesitant to volunteer or become a minister because they think it might be a “life sentence.” I try to make sure that our councils and committees have terms and limits, so that parishioners know the expectations for serving. Other responsibilities can be more fluid in regard to length, but I respect and want to thank those who decide it is time to pass the baton to someone else. Recently I learned that two Holy Family parishioners are completing a ministry or service: Dianne Rothfork, who has been a cantor for approximately 30 years, will no longer be leading us in song after the middle of February. Thank you very much for helping the parish in this important role! Almost all of us know how eager we would be to lead the assembly in singing, right? Secondly, Barb Rock has sewed the Baptismal garments for a number of years and is ending this responsibility; thank you for helping us offer this symbolic gift to the newly baptized infants! If anyone with sewing skills would like to provide this service, please let me know. At both parishes we can always use more music ministers: cantors, accompanists and instrumentalists. Don’t be afraid to give it a chance, as I like to say, “If I can sing during Mass, almost anyone can!”

An invitation to serve is often the best way to encourage involvement in the parish, but there are other possibilities, too. You might have a particular skill, interest or talent that could help us fulfill our mission as a parish; please speak with me or the person responsible for that area of parish life. Or, you could sense a need that is not currently met and be interested in addressing it. We also have our “regular” parish ministries and activities that would welcome “new blood” and a fresh approach. Yes, we face some restrictions in this COVID time, but it never hurts to ask, suggest or volunteer. Maybe it’s time for your new experience?!?

Sincerely in Christ,

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION WITH US - During

these times we have been relying more and more on communicating

with you via virtual options. We have found that a lot of the emails in our system are inactive. If you have a moment, could you please verify

that your registration information is correct? You can do this yourself by

visiting https:/winona.parishsoft familysuite.com/ and setting up an

account or you can submit a parishioner update form on our website sjwhf.org and we will

compare the information for you. Thanks in advance!
