Dr. Nancy Dome has been providing strategies and
support to educators to help children overcome their
barriers for over 20 years. She will provide SJUSD staff
with current, accessible and transforming professional

competencies needed to teach a growing diverse student

Rigorous Reading/Close Reading Presentation
& Breakout Sessions
Dr. Douglas Fisher and his team will continue to deepen our
understanding of Rigorous Reading. Also, there will be content
breakout sessions in the afternoon focused on Guided Reading.

Building an Effective RtI System Dr. Luis Cruz has established a reputation as an effective agent
of change with a keen ability to collectively create environments

Overcoming the Achievement Gap: Ensuring
Equity in Every Classroom
Dr. Anthony Muhammad is recognized as one of the field’s
leading experts in the areas of school culture and organizational
climate. During our sessions, Dr. Muhammad will be sharing
insights and practices that ensure equitable opportunities for
students that support closing the achievement gap.

Rigorous Reading Reading Complex Text: Gradual Release Professional Development with Fisher and Frey. A Cohort Team from each school site (principal and three teachers) will attend these full day training sessions at the District Office three times during the year. This Site Cohort Team will then deliver follow-up PDs at their school site for teaching staff three times during the year.

Three District Friday Professional Development days will be
provided to support Guided Reading in grades TK — 5.
Teachers will develop expertise in: balanced literacy, progress
monitoring, small group instruction, station rotations, and
scaffolded reading instruction. Trainings will be held at school
sites.

Positive Behavior Intervention & Strategies
(PBIS)
Professional development for PBIS will include the Tier II
intervention strategy Check-in/Check-out (CICO) and progress
monitoring, Boys Town Social Emotional Learning curriculum,
Restorative Practice circling, and Mindfulness. The PBIS Tiered
Fidelity Inventory will be implemented in 2017-18 for both Tier I
and Tier II level interventions. Why Try training will be provided
for Student Success Room (SSR) instructors well.

Boys Town is a school-based intervention program that provides
