DESCRIPTION

This is a collection of my best works during my 3 year undergraduate degree in Architecture. It's a little piece of me as a designer and hopefully one that opens up opportunities to grow as a designer.

HOUSE JOHAN

[HOUSE JOHAN] [3]

[CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES]

THE BUILDING RESPONDS TO THE SITE BY NOT IMPOSING ITSELF ON THE SITE BUT ACCENTUAT-ING ITS QUALITIES

IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THE HOUSE TO BE IN HARMONY WITH THE LANDSCAPE

[MODEL]

Location: Mucklneuk, Pretoria

This project was commissioned by one of our lecturers. It was our first project dealing with an actual client. In order to satisfy the client’s needs I chose to design the house according to his current daily rituals. It is not only a celebration of his daily rituals but also an celebration of his daily rituals but also an opportunity to enrich his life by introducing new rituals.

The response is very contextual, taking styling cues and materials fstyling cues and materials from the surround-ing environment, as well as responding to the steep site. The house is meant to work in har-mony with the landscape which has been regulated by using horizontal planes which link the complementary functions of the land-scape and the house.

WEDDING CHAPEL

new pictures of model

Location: Boshoek, North West

The chapel forms part of a wedding venue. The aim was to create a chapel that didn’t serve just one religious group but everyone who pleased to use it. The chapel has to be able to be used internally and externallydepending on the size of the audience. depending on the size of the audience.

The chapel is meant to celebrate the event taking place and it does so by considering the approach, the quality of the space and the departure from the space.

SUNNYSIDE LIBRARY

PICTURES OF MODEL

Location: Sunnyside, Pretoria

As the population of the city incAs the population of the city increases, places such as Sunnyside become satu-rated and with the growth in numbers, the youth needs to be given a facility that will cater for their extra curricular needs as well as enable them to grow in the city. The site is between Sunnyside,(which is a ppredominantly residential area) and the CBD, (where the schools and workplaces are located).

The buildings is to act as a bridge between home and school. The form is derived from identifying the movement patterns along the site and then extruding the negative spaces created by these paths. The site also allowed to not only house a library but also shops that will help cater for the retail needs of the rresidents in the area.

ACCOMODATING HOMO FABER:

3-PEAT APARTMENTS

Location: Servaas St, Pretoria West, Gauteng

I am convinced that architecture is here to service the society. The lack of community is quite prominent in Pretoria West. The opportunity to create architecture that upliuplifts and enriches the lives of the people who use it was present. In this “work, play and live” building, “play” comes across as a way to rejuvinate the community. “Play” can enrich life through shared social activities.

I see the I see the world as a complex network of systems. These systems start at a very small scale, and for architecture to have the power to change society as whole, it has to start by fixing the small systems.

Architecture has been a common denomi-nator among mankind. Even if it goes unnoticed by the layman it affects each and everyone one who uses it. I wantarchitecture to be a tool, a tool for encour-aging social, political and cultural aware-ness and activity within the society. I want to create architecture which is considered social equity and my authorship is merely that of a facilitator to a renewed society.

In this building ,photography is used as a tool to memorialise as well as a tool to ed-ucate people about their environment. By using the word, photo/light, I decided to show the dualities in life through simple juxtaposition of materials, textures and light and darkness.

I beliI believe society should be more politically enabled and politically charged. The current political stance in South Africa is quite hege-monic. Our politics are centred around our politicians and the “individual” is excluded from the politics that govern them. Instead of having our politicians antagonis-ing the people, we should move towards a dichotomy, where the politician and the civil man can be seen as mutually exclusive groups even if they have contradictory objectives.

The individual must be a political agent and since communication methods are ubiqui-tous, a new way of expressing political conflicts has to be made. These conflicts should be done in the public sphere just like in the Agora. The public space shall be transformed in such a way that political forms of exchange become spatial.

The building is to house two political parties, Agang and EFF. The architecture has 2 main objectives: 1. To show out political parties as equals who embrace their political conflicts by em-phasizing the positive aspects of these con-flicts.

2. To enable the common man by blurring lines between him and his political status thereby allowing him to participate in politics.
