We have to admit that every one of us at SIXTYNINE HQ is a birt of a sneaker freak. Spring saw us fall hard for the amazing light up shoes from BEAM - perfect for a summer of festivals!

So it should come as no surprise that we are in love with the sheer joy that is M.O.A’s Disney collaboration.

M.O.A specialise in contemporary urbanwear that interprets art and pop culture in unconventional ways. Must-have pieces include lace-up tennis trainers for women that are crafted from golden and silver-hued laminated leather with Mickey Mouse effigy embroideries. Men aren’t excluded thanks to some discreet but edgy Donald Duck embroidery along with loafers that make an impression with a magnified Mickey Mouse effigy print on metallic black leather – a style that makes a nod to large-scale artworks from the pop-art movement.

TOP TEN EDIT: PERFECT BBQ

WINE TASTING WITH SIOFRA O’BRIEN

As barbecue season arrives, it’s time to match those grilling skills with some great wines to ensure the perfect outdoor party. For real meat lovers, try Minchia Adelaide Hills Australia 2011, £21. A real “wow” from first sip to last, this is one seductive wine: a black cherry bomb with great spice; it’s big, rich and velvety and has great balance.

For those who enjoy fish or chicken straight from the barbie, opt for Tabali Reserva Viognier 2014 DO Limari Valley Chile, £15. An off-dry wine, this pairs well with lightly spiced dishes.

Finally, for those who plump for a rosé, try William Chase Rosé 14, £15. An elegant drink in an equally elegant bottle, there’s notes of white stone fruit and herbs. Dry and crisp with a great finish.

Siofra O’Brien is the Wine Specialist at Harvey Nichols Birmingham. Join her in store every Wednesday to enjoy complimentary drop-in taster sessions from 7pm-8pm. Call 0121 616 6024 for more details.

With our fingers firmly crossed for a barbecue summer, KATIE SAYERS, Foodmarket Manager at Harvey Nichols picks her top ten essentials to ensure your outdoor dining is the envy of the neighbours.

TRiED AND TESTED:

G LABS BIRMINGHAM

RADIO PRESENTER CHIARA GLORIOSO SWAPPED HER MICROPHONE FOR A NOTEBOOK WHEN WE ASKED HER

TO BECOME A ROVING REPORTER FOR SIXTYNINE DEGREES MAGAZINE. HER FIRST TASK

: A REVIEW OF AN EXCLUSIVE AND LUXURIOUS FACIAL AND TREATMENT AT G-LABS IN BIRMINGHAM. WE’RE NOT BAD BOSSES REALLY!

Imagine… a Harley Street Clinic at the heart of ‘OUR’ city! Well, imagine no more, as Birmingham welcomes G-Labs Medi Spa and it’s owner, Lea Lawrence. G-Labs has just launched a 5 star luxurious treatment service entitled the ‘Nefe Face & Body’ that offers bespoke packages using non-invasive state of the art technology used by none other than NASA and A list models and actresses to get red carpet ready. So, I took myself down to G-Labs to see exactly what is on offer.

On arrival, I was greeted by Lea Lawrence, the lady behind this innovative personalised treatment service . She made me feel at ease, explaining everything I needed to know which was great as I’m a complete novice when it comes to such treatments. Lea’s manner combined with the calm and soothing treatment room left me feeling completely relaxed.

Once I had changed into my fluffy gown, I was welcomed into the treatment rooms by my therapist. This was the first part of my non-invasive treatment, the exclusive 15-point Nefe Gold Facial, something no other clinic, spa or beauty company offers. It is an extremely flawless treatment to sculpt and tighten the face, concentrating on all the areas that can age as we get older.

Completely flawless from start to finish, I can say that this treatment was something I’d never experienced before in a Spa. When we think of facials, we think

of that area being the main focus, but this was an all over, personalised full body treatment in an amazingly therapeutic treatment room. Feeling completely and utterly relaxed, I was taken by my therapist into another treatment room where once again, I was greeted by Lea. Walking into the second treatment room made me feel a little uneasy, as although the room itself was stunning, there was a bed surrounded by machinery and wires- not what I would usually class as relaxation!

But within 5 minutes, Lea had made me feel quite at ease and in fact excited for the next stage of my treatment. She took into account all my lifestyle needs, asking lots of questions to determine how she could supply me with a complete bespoke personal service. The next stage of the treatment was to go beneath the skin using electrical currents. An incredible advance in technology focusing on your individual aesthetic beauty needs.

Surprisingly, it didn't hurt, it was incredibly relaxing and I couldn't wait to see the results. My skin felt amazing, looked amazing and the end results exceeded all of my expectations! It was a wonderfully indulgent experience from start to finish. This is just one of the superb personalised non-invasive treatments on offer at G-Labs and there are a wide range of treatments you can choose from, even as advanced as a DNA based assessment and course of treatments.

To discuss your options or book in with G-Labs, call Lea Lawrence 07926 732 582 or visit www.g-labs.co.uk for more information.

You won’t need to spend long in Nottingham before you realise just how many great restaurants, bars, pubs, delis and cafes that the city has to offer. Nottingham is renowned for being a food and drink hotspot on a local, regional and national level with exciting new venues opening all the time.

So to celebrate all things tasty, the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), has created Taste Nottingham, an It’s in Nottingham initiative which will take place from Monday 27 June to Thursday 30 June.

During this four day extravaganza you’ll be able to enjoy some delicious offers and exciting events, including the first ever Moving Feast: a three-course meal which will take you across the city to different venues for the ultimate dining experience.

You can also save on eating and drinking with offers, discounts and special menus from many of Nottingham’s food and drink businesses. From coffee and cake to tantalising Thai, there’s something for all occasions, taste buds and budgets. Enjoy a night out at one of the city’s safe and well run Best Bar None accredited venues - look out for the Best Bar None sticker in windows of accredited city

centre venues. The city’s top Best Bar None venue will be crowned at the Nottinghamshire Food and Drink Awards on 22 June along with the winner of the best city centre experience category.

All the details of the events and offers have been brought together in a specially-created food and drink guide, which will be delivered to homes across the region and to businesses in the city centre. Pick up a copy and discover something new or rediscover an old favourite with the guide’s directory of all the different places in the city centre that you can visit to eat, drink and spend your time in.

How did you make the switch to professional women’s football and teaching PE to DJing?

It all kind of flowed really. I’d always played football and started getting into DJing when I was about 16, just as a hobby really. I went off to uni and carried on with my football, coaching part time and Djing. I started getting some local gigs and when uni finished I had to decide whether to carry on with the football coaching and teaching PE or take the chance and pursue my passion for DJing. Things snowballed after that and I spent the summers of 2010 and 2011 working and checking things out; I think they were pivotal too. I just took the jump and it paid off.

Is it true that you literally spent your time door knocking for gigs in Ibiza? It must be an amazing feeling now to know that you’re going to return with a residency at Amnesia?

It’s something that doesn’t sink in, but if I do stop and think how far I’ve come and where I’ve come from and how much Ibiza means to me it’s pretty overwhelming. It is literally my dream come true so yeah it’s quite emotional when you sit there and think about it. I can’t explain it, it’s an absolute honour.

We caught you several times over the last few months; there was No Tomorrow in Nottingham, at Ibiza Rocks at the W.A.R closing party, the last night of your What Hannah Wants tour and more recently with My Nu Leng on board your boat party at Lost and Found. That was definitely one of my highlights of the festival. Is there a particular gig or festival that stands out to you?

I like every gig regardless. I mean even if it’s not so much of a good gig I’ll still learn something from it. All the gigs you mentioned were great but they were all so completely

different. I absolutely love doing the boat parties because they’re so small and intimate and you can actually touch people and

I love that kind of intimate vibe; I can delve into garage and go a bit crazy with a smaller crowd which is great. But then my tour was much more of an underground warehouse type of vibe which then is so different to festivals with thousands of people and it’s more intense. So they’re all different and provide different atmospheres. A few of the festivals that stand out to me over the past couple of years though are Hide Out in Croatia, Creamfields and Park Life. They were all amazing.

“Birmingham has one of the most vibrant clubbing

scenes in the UK”

Page 29: Sixtynine degrees Issue 84 Summer 2016

29Are you excited to be part of the Pacha festival in Amsterdam?

It’ll be amazing to be there, I love playing in Amsterdam as they’re always all up for a rave. It doesn’t matter if it is 7 o’clock in the morning or 7 o’clock at night! I don’t know much about it as yet- I’m not sure if it’s an outside stage or an indoor stage even but I know it’ll be a great night.

There’s some incredible talent coming out of Birmingham at the moment with the likes of Tom Shorterz, Seedy Sonics and Lady Leshurr. How does it feel to be flying the flag for the city on an international level?

Birmingham is very special to me, it’s where I honed my skills so I’m forever grateful. Birmingham is one of my favourite places in the world to play as obviously it’s my home town but it also has one of the most vibrant clubbing scenes in the UK. I wish I didn’t have the Brummie accent though!

I’m guessing that’s why you closed your What Hannah Wants tour there. The tour was such a success nationally, do you have any plans to take it international?

Long term plans, I definitely don’t want to rush anything. I’ve got a fairly long standing reputation in the UK and as far as Australia and America I’ve got a long way to go yet. You know it’s part of the journey and part of the challenge so again I wouldn’t want to rush anything. I think I’ve got to make a name for myself as a DJ first, but yes in terms of a long term goal I want to expand worldwide but it’ll just take time.

So what is next for Hannah Wants?

I just want to be the biggest and best that I can be for as long as I can be, but I think I’ve got a long way to go and I just want to improve constantly. So now I’ve obviously got to a certain level, I certainly won’t be taking my foot off the pedal. I’ve got to change it up and bring other stuff to the table. I don’t know what the future holds but I’ll have fun on the way

so we will see. I’ve got big aspirations for me personally and the Hannah Wants brand itself.

I’m a big believer in the goal setting and you can get literally get anything you want through hard work and it is incredible what you can achieve…

It was something really weird, I was actually going through my old hard drive the other day and I found a list of goals I set years ago in about 2013, and I’d written things on there like Mixmag cover, Amnesia residency, BBC radio 1 residency and this was way back before anything had happened and I’ve completed every single goal that was on there and you look back and think wow.

Hand luggage packing is all about embracing the capsule concept- choose individual pieces that can be worn in multiple ways to give you the maximum number of options.

Choose a plain, matt finished swim short, that way it can be worn as short as well.

Pack a chambray shirt; more forgiving than linen and looks better with a crumple or two. Wear sleeves rolled up with shorts or rolled down for dinner.

A slim fit chino- khaki goes with everything- plain t shirt and tank. Add in a lightweight sweater, either v neck or crew, and you can mix, match or layer

depending on the weather. A good quality leather slider can take you from beach to bar; you can team them with any element of your travelling outfit so you’re ready for any occasion. Now all that’s needed are some killer sunglasses - did you see our feature on page 38?

The Best of the US

The USA is an enormous country: almost two and a half times the size of the European Union. The state of Texas is almost twice the size of Germany, two United Kingdoms could fit into California…you get the idea. That makes planning a trip there a herculean task. To simplify things, we’ve created a guide to the highlights of each region in the USA.

New York City: New York really is the city that never sleeps. There’s just too much to do: incredible theatre on Broadway and beyond, global cuisine on every corner, skyscrapers stretching up as high as the eye can see and dozens of museums and galleries. Don’t limit yourself to Manhattan and Brooklyn, the other three boroughs and upstate New York have lots to offer as well. Experience the serenity upstate in the Hudson Valley with leafy parks and vibrant arts and farming communities.

Maine Coast: With its rocky shorelines, pretty towns and friendly locals, Maine’s coast is a quintessential New England destination. It’s ideal for sailing and fishing, or just hanging out by the harbour. Binging on seafood is a must while you’re here; Maine is famous for its lobsters, oysters and clams.

Boston: Founded in 1630, Boston is one of the USA’s oldest cities and perhaps the best place to discover the country’s founding. Walk the Freedom

Trail that links historic sites from the American Revolution. Boston is also a major sports city with professional baseball, basketball, hockey and American football teams.

47Where to go to in the Southeast

New Orleans: Nowhere epitomises ‘melting pot’ quite as well as this French-Creole-Southern city. Come to eat – sugar-sprinkled beignets, shrimp-stuffed po’ boy sandwiches, gumbo thick with spices and seafood. Come to learn – French, Spanish and African history, historic architecture, the legacy of Hurricane Katrina. Come to dance – brass bands, jazz clubs, street parades, Mardi Gras.

Civil Rights Tour: Integral to American history, the Civil Rights Movement ended racial segregation and paved the way for equality. Visit Alabama and see the Rosa Parks Museum, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the famous bridge in Selma where one of the movement’s iconic marches occurred. Follow Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, from his Atlanta childhood home to the Memphis motel where he was assassinated.

Beaches: California gets all the hype but the Southeast has some of the best beaches in the USA. There’s something for everyone, from the glamour of Miami’s

South Beach to the rustic shores of North and South Carolina’s coastal islands.

Where to go to in the Midwest

Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario – these five lakes truly deserve their name; taken together, they are the largest body of freshwater in the world. Their rocky cliffs, lush green islands and wide-open beaches invite both adventure and relaxation.

Great Lakes Cities: The Great Lakes region is also where natural beauty meets enterprising cities. This is the former industrial heartland of the USA, where fortunes were built at the turn of the 20th century. Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, have a pint at a craft brewery in Milwaukee, or watch revitalisation in action in Detroit.

Chicago: A metropolitan city with a neighbourly Midwestern vibe, Chicago draws visitors for its diverse food scene, world-class museums, and legendary architecture. Its winters may be brutal, but it more than makes up for them with its incredible summers: free outdoor festivals and concerts, baseball games at Wrigley Field and lazy afternoons wandering Lake Shore Drive.

Texas Cities: Explore Texan hospitality through its cities. Hang with hipsters and listen to the latest indie bands in Austin, feast on authentic Tex-Mex and visit the historic Alamo in San Antonio, go to a rodeo in Fort Worth and enjoy the USA’s largest arts district in Dallas.

Skiing in Colorado: Winter in the Colorado Rockies is a skier’s dream – long sunny days, fluffy deep powder and consistent heavy snowfall. At the legendary big ski towns like Aspen, Vail and Telluride, there’s some of the world’s best downhill, cross-country and backcountry skiing. Beginners and experts welcome.

California Cities: No trip to the West Coast would be complete without experiencing California’s two most famous cities: Los Angeles and San Francisco. These rivals share great beaches and thriving restaurant scenes, but they differ a lot as well – LA has sunshine, traffic, urban sprawl and Hollywood, while San Fran has fog, cable cars and Silicon Valley.

Often lumped in with the ‘Arab States’, Qatar lies somewhere between the relative laissez faire lifestyle of Dubai and the more disciplinarian rule of Saudi Arabia. Here is a city that dares to dream big; that is fast reinventing itself as a luxury stopover destination

to rival Dubai, calling itself ‘The Gateway to the World’. It also realises that to be a world player – bear in mind it’s hosting the World Cup in 2022 – it needs to do something serious with its PR issues. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Kevin Urquhart jumped at the chance of visiting Qatar’s capital, Doha, to find out for himself…

Qatar is a direct flight from Birmingham to Hamad International in Doha. The 6.5hour flight on the Dreamliner 787 skirts you past white topped mountains and great lakes as big as seas, flying over international waters sandwiched between Baghdad, Bahrain and Basra. These are oil rich, war torn, politically and religiously over-zealous states that we are all familiar with from conflict reports on the TV. It is with this media-led view that I enter Qatar, admittedly apprehensive.

Qatar found deep reserves of oil and gas in the

1930s and has, in the past eighty years, gone giddy with wealth with most growth in the past twelve years alone. You quickly realise that the business cognoscenti have been dabbling in Doha for decades: 20% of our gas comes from here; bi-lateral trade amounts to over £5bilion currently and Qatari investment in the UK valued at over £30 billion to date. That Qatar investors own half of the real estate in London – including Harrods – should also not go unrecognized, nor that universities such as Coventry are havens for entrepreneurial Qataris seeking a thorough grounding in business studies.

Everything appears to be with its own obsolescence in mind. With no restrictions on land, imagination or money, it’s a heady formula! What they lack in taste, they make up for in ambition. Doha: the biggest little country you’ve never heard of. It dares to dream big. It embraces reinvention. When you combine this with year-round sunshine, golden beaches, and every major luxury shipping brand in the world – plus it’s only 6.5 hours from UK - what’s not to adore in Doha?

DRINKING IN DOHAQatar is a Muslim state, but that’s not to say it doesn’t drink. Certainly, there is only one licenced liquor store in Doha and you have to have a licence to purchase alcohol, but drink is not difficult to discover with every five-star hotel and resort offering a range of bars and restaurants that are unsurpassed. Make sure you try:

Nobu at the Four Seasons. A lantern lit path navigates around the Four Seasons hotel and harbour, showing Nobu and its multi-million pound yachts to full effect. It is, quite simply, one of the most stunning and achingly hip inside/outside bars and restaurants in the world.

The Sheraton Hotel’s Backyard has an incredible lounge and club and is one of the hottest places to be seen at: DJs such as Tiesto play regularly. It also operates an anti-glamour dress code, which is highly unusual in Doha.

SHOPPING IN DOHA

Seriously? Designer shopping is the true deity of Doha. Every luxury fashion brand is vying for square footage in Doha’s 17 malls. Be sure to visit Souq Waqif: This appears ancient, but has been purpose built in the style of the traditional souq with a warren of highly fragranced alleys and specialist markets where everything is traded and bartered for: from gold, cloth and handicrafts. Charmingly, one trader proclaimed to have a wonderful selection of ‘real, genuine fakes!’

TOURIST MUSTS SEESSand Dune Bashing at Sealine:

A convoy of Landcruisers literally belt over the desert – sometimes

with all four wheels off the ground – until you hit the sealine at Khor al Adeid, which is where the desert meets the sea. Your rattled bones are justly rewarded with a beach oasis where you can sunbathe on floating pontoons and eat bbq food under canopies. Museum of Islamic Art (MOIA):

this is one of Doha’s most iconic structures and is breathtaking.

Set over three floors and designed by I.M.Pei, it has the largest and finest collections of pieces representing more than 1,400 years of civilisation. What’s interesting is that many of the artefacts have been bought from the UK and re-interred in Doha. It’s also symbolic of Qatar’s ambition of being seen as a major arts and cultural destination.

The Dhow Cruise: The traditional Dhow boat trip leisurely circles the MOIA before setting

out to sea. Leaping off the boat and floating in the salty, cyan seas is a must!

WHERE TO STAY

Doha is home to some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, so don’t be expecting a backpacker trail of hostels: the W; the Westin Doha; the St Regis; the Kempinski and the Sheraton are some of the city’s finest. One of the new kids on the block is the Shangri La, which is based on the famous La Corniche; a five kilometre promenade that wraps around three sides of the sea inlet. Recently opened, this is opulent, spacious and befitting its five-star stature. Its seventh floor, open air, rooftop pool is stunning.

Jamie Raven wowed audiences on the 2015 Final of Britain’s Got Talent and since then has had over 200 million views online of his mind blowing illusions. SIXTYNINE degrees caught up with Jamie ahead of his UK tour which includes Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on the 18th June.

So most of us were given a magic set when we were younger is that how it started for you? Well I never had a magic set! I reckon I was about 8 or 9. I remember one of my earliest memories of it was when we used to go on holiday to Spain every summer and I remember hanging round with all the Spanish kids. Spanish playing cards are different to the ones over here and one of the guys did a trick, where you put cards into piles and move this here, that there and so on. I was really intrigued as to how it worked. Later on we went to visit some family friends who lived in India and there was a magician at our restaurant and he showed me how to do some tricks and that’s what got me hooked.

So, before you actually went on Britain’s Got Talent were you performing magic full time? Well I went to Bath University when I was 17, not through any academic brilliance but just because my birthday is at the end of August and I got an economics degree but along the way, I’d been learning magic for about 9 years at that point, I met a guy who ran an entertainment agency and he said there was a demand for magicians to wander round at parties so I started that.

So aside from the Britain’s Got Talent judges who is the most famous person you’ve performed for? The most famous would be Richard Branson. I’d done some work Virgin Atlantic before the show and they have lots of events to celebrate lots of things so I’ve entertained a few times on inaugural flights to new locations.

So what’s the best trick that you’ve ever seen? I would have to say, there’s a difference between the best trick and the best routine. The best routine I’ve ever seen was Marco Karvo. He does a routine where he produces all of these different birds from everywhere, dove after dove just appear from nowhere and then right at the end he produces this giant parrot that he throws out into the audience and it flies all the way round the theatre before landing back on his arm. In terms of my favourite trick, it’d probably be David Copperfield flying. That was just amazing watching him actually fly on the stage, getting a lady out of the audience and carrying her; it was like a real life peter pan.

Are there any illusions that you’re still trying to work out how they did it? Oh there are loads! You know what I’ve learnt, it doesn’t matter what profession you’re in, the more you learn, the more you realise how little you actually know. You will only ever be on the tip of the iceberg in any field, there’s always so much more to learn and to discover. That’s what I love about magic.

Jamie Raven will be at De Montfort Hall, Leicester on the 18th June. Tickets cost from £18.50, with concessions £16.50. Call 0116 233 3111 or visit www.demontforthall.co.uk

TAKE IT TO CHURCHIt’s been almost eight years since Alexandra Burke’s debut single Halleluiah sold over a million copies in the UK alone; a first for a British Female Soloist. Since then she’s released two albums, received critical acclaim for her role in the hit musical The Bodyguard and is just about to take on the iconic role of Delores Van Cartier in the musical comedy Sister Act, coming to Curve in Leicester on the 30th July and Birmingham’s New Alexan-dra on the 12th September. SIXTYNINE degrees caught up with Alexandra to find out how she’s going to take this show to church!

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today Alexandra, what are we interrupting you doing?

Ah you’re not interrupting! I’m actually in Leeds at the moment, it’s our first week here for The Bodyguard tour and the only thing you’re interrupting, although you’re not really, is me learning my lines. I’m going through the Sister Act scripts as we speak so I’m cracking on with that in be-tween shows. I’ve just learnt all of Act One and I’ll be going on to Act Two once I’m sure I’ve perfected Act One.

For those not in the know Sister Act is based on the smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith and tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva whose life

Page 61: Sixtynine degrees Issue 84 Summer 2016

61

www.69-degrees.co.uk

takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder and is forced to hide out in a convent disguised as a nun! So it’s fair to say it’s a very different show to The Bodyguard and the character of Rachel Marron that Alexandra has played for almost two years now.

Oh they’re completely opposite, I mean they are worlds apart! It’s a bit of a weird transition between the two characters but it’s working so far- I dedicate my mornings to being Delores and my evenings to being Rachel Marron. I’ve never had to learn the lines for one show whilst doing another so I am having to really concentrate but it’s good as its keeping me on my toes!

So how did you get started in music?Music was always a huge thing in our house. I grew up listening to a lot of old motown, soul peo-ple like Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston of course, Aretha Franklin, The Stylistics, The Temptations, Steve Wonder I mean my background in music is very soulful and still to this day I listen to these amazing legends as you learn so much from them.

I have to say as well that I always listen to my mum, she is still my biggest inspiration and someone I look up to. I remember when I saw my mum sing with Soul to Soul on Top of the Pops, I remember seeing my mum looking so beautiful and so happy on TV and I never will forget when she walked into the house afterwards and she was all made up, hair was flawless, she just looked fantastic and it made me think I just want that happiness that she’s got.

With next year already mapped out with touring are there any plans to go back into a recording studio? Is that something you want to do?

It really is! The thing is I actually recorded the ma-jority of my third album before The Boydguard tour.

When I first started the tour I was coming off stage and going straight to a mobile studio that I took with my from city to city. I would then start recording and working on tracks after the show. The plan originally was to finish the album after The Boydguard; I wasn’t going to take Sister Act to be honest I was going to go back into music but then of course my Mum, who is my saviour, sat me down and said to me ‘Look there’s not a lot of roles out there for British black women and you’ve just been given another

opportunity and you cannot turn it down’ .I mean she was absolutely right, there

aren’t a lot of roles out there for black women although now we have Dreamgirls, hopefully The Colour Purple will come here so roles are coming and they’re getting bigger but Sister Act was a role I just could not turn down. It would have been so silly of me to pass up the opportunity

to play such an iconic role and miss out on another wonderful

opportunity. So the plan now is to have a year in Sister Act and then in

2017 focus back on the music.

The story of the Bodyguard is actually harrowing – stalkers, murder etc – it must be a relief to be going into a comedy- are you ready for some laughs?

Oh completely, there are a lot of laughs! Well Craig Revell Horwood is directing and choreographing the show and I’m really excited as we’ve not worked together before. I absolutely loved him on Strictly and think he’s a creative genius so hopefully Craig will just bring the best out of me for the role.

Sister Act will be at Curve, Leicester from Sat 30th July and The New Alexandra Theatre, Bir-mingham from 12th September. To find out more or to buy tickets visit www.curveonline.co.uk or www.atftickets.com

Poor the Tom Odell. It wasn’t so much his 0 out of 10 review in the NME (I mean who

reads reviews) but it was more the fact that his Dad rang up afterwards to complain forcing the nation to cringe in empathic pity – whether it was in the playground or in the press, everyone’s well-meaning parents have embarrassed them in some way. Hopefully Odell senior is being kept away from telephones and Twitter as its unlikely Wrong Crowd will rise above the nil points stakes.

SHURA -NOTHING’S REAL

Shura mixes eighties elements from early Madonna to Sci-fi and gaming on

her much anticipated debut album and manages to create a collection of perfect poolside pop in the process. Highlights include the sultry Touch and Indecision although strangely former single release White Light has been missed off- make sure you add it to your playlist- it’s the ideal accompaniment to a bit of breast stroke.

BAT FOR LASHES- THE BRIDE

Always one for a theme, Natasha Khan returns with an album that follows the story of

a woman whose fiancé has been killed in a crash on the way to the church for their wedding. The Bride flees the scene to take the honeymoon trip alone, resulting in a dark meditation on love, loss, grief, and celebration within a lush narrative.

JAKE BUG - ON MY OWN

Nottingham’s own Jake Bugg is back with a richer sound on new album, ‘On My One’ released

on June 17th. Jake wrote all eleven songs, played most of the instruments and has also produced most of the album including the dour title track. We’re reserving judgement until we hear the complete album although the frenetic Gimme The Love leaves us hopeful for a less misanthropic Bugg.

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS- THE GETAWAY

E S S EN T I A L DOWNLOA DSTHE DREAMING ROOM ~ LAURA MVULA Birmingham’s Laura Mvula is one the most distinctive vocal talents of recent years with her first album, Sing to the Moon a soundscape of ethereal harmonies that stirred the soul. Thankfully the second album retains Mvula’s beautiful vocal layering but fuses them with a more soul and urban inspired backing – collaborations include Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Wretch 32. Grab a beach towel, get your headphones on and apply your sun lotion, now just lie back and listen.

The band’s first studio album since 2011’s I’m with You and produced by Danger Mouse, who replaces

Rick Rubin after twenty-five years and six albums as the band’s producer.

CHARLIE HEDGES FEAT. SONNY REEVES - KALEIDOSCOPE Is it ok to use your own column to promote yourself? I reckon every so often a bit of self-indulgence is ok – so this month I’m picking my brand new release Kaleidoscope as my Charlie’s Angel. It’s out July 8th on Armada Deep and whilst you might have heard me playing this deeper, bass-led style of house in my recent DJ sets, it’s totally different to anything I’ve made before – I hope that you guys will love listening to it as much as I loved making it! The vocals by the awesome Sonny Reeves really blew me away when I first heard them and turn this into a proper Summer / Ibiza track. It’s been killing it in my sets and you can be sure it’s the first in a string of release that you’ll be hearing from me over the coming months!

KASKADE & CID – US

I LOVE the drop on this one, such a tune!

With Grammy-nominated artist Kaskade, you just know you’re always going to get something that’s of the highest level of quality, and with a strong list of remixes including one from Doorly, this release is definitely up there with my favourites this summer.

THE MAGICIAN – SHY

The one thing you can guarantee with

any Magician production is that it’ll be a) Catchy and b) Bouncy – and guess what? ‘Shy’ is 100%

both of those. I love how uplifting it is and contagious with its vocals; can you expect to hear this in Ibiza this year? Definitely .

MAX CHAPMAN – HOW I WORK

A slightly deeper, techy sound,

Max Chapman absolutely smashes the groove on this one. The UK producer has been knocking out so many stellar productions this year, including an artist album – put How I Work in an underground venue in Ibiza at 4am and this track sits perfectly amongst it.

MICHAEL WOODS – TAKE MY LOVE

Hands down one

of my favourite DJs and producers, this is just an AMAZING take on a classic. It’s upbeat, new-sounding and brings the original come to life again on a tribal house tip – not many remixes I believe get way with that, especially if the original was so good. I love this and can’t wait to play it out in a club as part of my UK #CharlieSays tour!

MIRIFICO - THE LAST UNICORN

A collection of unfinished tracks

found hidden in an Ibizan Villa and inspired by the last great orgy of the early 80’s have been remade, lengthened and added to by Mirifico in their first artist album with guest vocals from Sam Obernik, Katherine Ellis, Bonnie Bailey and Soraya Vivian. Released on iTunes by Fierce Angel.

LOST & FOUNDAnnie Mac has been synonymous in pioneering new music

for many years, with her successful daily spot on Radio 1 and her sell out AMP events. Now she’s taken on the

festival circuit with Lost & Found being the result. Not one to miss out on partying in the sunshine, our resident raver,

Lilith Hunt-Sheppard flew to Malta to experience the festival for herself.

I had friends that went to Lost & Found on its first year and was super jealous when they told me all about it; I had no idea that Malta had such a clubbing vibe! Starting on the Thursday night, the launch party took place at the national aquarium with a Steller line up; the likes of Richy Ahmed and Skream killing it on the decks, before the lady herself

took to the stage and fireworks lit up the night sky.

There are plenty of parties as part of the festival, some in Castles - Monki was absolutely brilliant with her mix of deep house, new and old that got the whole castle pumped- and

some daytime pool parties at some of the official Lost & Found hotels. We caught Birmingham’s Seedy Sonics at the Qawra Palace hotel with their signature deep house

sound before heading out to the Hannah Wants and My Nu Leng boat party. This was definitely one of the big highlights

off the festival as it gave for a more intimate gig as we sailed, music pumping around the island.

Back on to dry land and to the Festival itself. Saturday highlights include Tuesday Club, Stormzy, who really

gets the crowd pumping and old favorites Shy FX and DJ EZ. The Sunday was just as packed with Mark Ronson and Groove Armada dropping hit after hit from their back catalogue before festival creator, Annie Mac ended it all

jumping off stage and dancing with the crowd after one of the best sets I have seen from her.

For several years, cocktails have been served to thirsty drinkers in bars everywhere. As you know from watching the professionals shake and pour them, there is definitely a skill involved. Recently Revolution Cornerhouse told us about their cocktail masterclasses and invited us down to give them a try. Not one to shy away from learning something new, Lilith Hunt-Sheppard went along with some of her girlies to see what’s shaking.

I have often been mesmerised by mixologists as they ply their trade, so when I was offered the opportunity to try the masterclass I was excited about shaking my own drink. As we arrived and were introduced to Dylan, who would be teacher for the evening, he went through the plan for the Masterclass as we enjoyed a cocktail he had made for each of us our arrival. Drinks drunk, it was time to get shaking our own, Dylan took us through the process, giving us any little hits and tips

that would help us along the way.

Dylan was brilliant, not only does he know his stuff but also made sure we all had a great time. Between shaking there were games and little competitions, in all honesty, we didn’t stop laughing the whole time we were there. Whether you wanted to do something different with friends or team building at work colleagues, the masterclass at Revolution is sure to shake things up with the best of them.

Prices start form £25pp and they offer a range of different packages. For more information get in touch or to get all the up to date information follow them on Facebook @ Revolution Cornerhouse

CHAPTER XII

Birmingham’s Rainbow Venues twelth birthday celebrations saw them pull out all the stops with the day event, ChapterXII. Bringing over forty DJ’s across six stages for a twelve hour dance event and our very own Lilith Hunt-Sheppard

was there to be part of the celebrations.

With music pumping from not one, but two huge outdoor tents and a mix of both Techno and

house, there were too many DJ’s to be able to see them all. One of our biggest highlights, was the incredible Richie Hawtin, his two hour set really raised the bar in a packed out Carpark.

Confetti cannons were fired in to the crowds to huge cheers and as the day darkened, lasers darted across the arenas. Following on from him was Pan Pot, who continued to keep the crowds literally jumping and we also moved

into the Arena to catch Sasha back to back with Nic Fanciulli. We wanted to catch the brilliant

Redlight, after seeing him at Annie Mac’s AMP tour, but the Terrace was difficult to get

onto and so opted to see George Fitzgerald in The Warehouse instead, where the vibe was

amazing.

As the night drew in, the dipping temperatures certainly didn’t put off any of the ravers as the

tents stayed packed out. Dubfire were amazing and we ended the day with the incredible Jamie

Jones who certainly didn’t disappoint.

400 Rabbits is one of Nottingham’s hidden gems. The story of the 400 Rabbits stems from ancient Mexico where lived the ancient Aztecs who worshiped a whole pantheon of mythical Gods. alcohol of Mayahuel. Instead, they all got drunk and partied!

MALMAISON WORK + PLAY Following significant investment, the new-look space recognises that modern

workers are tired of dull, expensive and inflexible spaces. Work + Play includes six rooms catering from 2-120+ people, four touch-down ‘pods’ for meetings up to four

people, and a breakout lounge. The space matches Malmaison’s style with high tech facilities and flexible spaces; giving people a more stylish option for their meetings

and events. We think it’s perfect for events, pitches or presentations where you want some gravitas and need to impress.

This launch follows a series of changes at the hotel, including the refurbishment of all 192 bedrooms, the re-launch of MalBar and the Chez Mal and, just last week, the launch of their stunning new penthouse suites. Formerly known as the Penny Black suite, it has been divided into two with one, the Nirvana suite, taking inspiration from Kurt Cobain and Sid Vicious. The new suite, complete with mirrored tile walls, disco ball chandelier and round bed, looks set to be the ultimate party-pad suite due to its wow factor! It’s no wonder that it’s the choice of rockstar royalty when they’re in the

city. It would seem that a Malmaison a day, helps you work, rest and play.

LAST WORD: IZZY BIZUIf you see Izzy Bizu whizzing past you on her Penny board, her Yorkie Poo dog Teddy for company, know that south London’s skateboarding soulstress is no one trick poppin’ pony. There’s layers to this. Whether Izzy Bizu is annihilating you at table tennis, kicking dust in your face at table football, or out styling you, you’ll still like her and that never-fading smile.

A fan of jazz-fusion mixes and a lover of squat parties and warehouse raves, there’s never a dull day musically either. Not one to box herself in, she’s wise beyond her 22-years, a sentiment that reigns in both her songwriting, vocal and performance- she’s already supported Sam Smith on his UK tour. Anyone who sees her live will know she’s studied the greats - and has every intention of standing with them as she releases her debut album. SIXTYNINE degrees caught up with her to find out more.

How would you describe your sound?I guess it’s like soul, all round soul with a bit of pop thrown in for good measure. Some of it is quite melancholic – some big influences in my life have been Amy Winehouse, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles but theres also a bit of funk in there, some RnB.

So how did you get spotted?I did an open mic session one night and that’s where

it started really. We pulled together an EP and put it out independently and that’s when the BBC 1 Extra and BBC Introducing team started getting interested and ended up asking us to perform at Glastonbury. From there we started doing other gigs and wrote an album off the back of that.

So when does the album come out?On the 2nd September- I’m really ready to get it out there. It’s really a soul album although there are a few jazzy chords here and there along with some groovy stuff. I dunno, I don’t want to say too much as I’m just looking forward to getting it out there and hearing what people think.

Can we catch you at any festivals this summer? We’r going to do the Great Escape festival which I’m really excited for as it’s one of my favourites. We’re also going to do Latitude, the Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Lovebox- quite a few so a lot of fun.

So once festival season is over and the album’s out, what’s next?Who knows! I’m not thinking past the album coming out, it all depends on that I suppose, we’ll have to see how it goes- although my guitarist is very optimistic and suggesting a world tour!
