Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection

When faced with some patent injustice, we tend to say “there ought to be a law”, as if the law alone could make things right. The author of Sirach lays the responsibility at our feet: “If you choose you can keep the commandments” (Sir 15:15).

Jesus in His role as teacher and lawgiver, goes further. He has not come to abolish the law, He says, but to fulfill (Mt 5:17). And so He calls us to something greater, to go one step further. Not just “you shall not kill”, but “you shall not be angry”(5:21,22). He calls us to seek reconciliation and forgiveness, even warning that we should leave our gift at the altar and first go and be reconciled with whoever has injured us (5:23,24). It is the law of love applied to the extreme.

St. Paul, in the passage from 1 Corinthians we read today, speaks of God’s wisdom, mysterious and hidden, which is now revealed to us through the Spirit (1 Cor 2:7.10), the one who strengthens us so that we may imitate Christ in His righteousness and bring the law to fulfillment. The world is much in need of our testimony.

Let us obey and teach these commandments, so that we will be called great in the kingdom of heaven (cf. Mt 5:19). God bless you!

Reflexión Dominical Siempre que encontramos alguna injusticia patente tendemos a decir que

debería haber una ley en contra, como si la ley por sí misma pudiera rectificar las cosas. El Sirácide, en cambio, nos hace responsables de lo que sucede: “Si tú lo quieres, puedes guardar los mandamientos” (Sir 15,15).

Jesús como maestro y legislador va más allá. No ha venido a abolir la ley, dice, sino a darle plenitud (Mt 5,17). Y así nos llama a algo más alto, a dar un paso más. No es solo “no matarás”, sino “no te enojarás” (5,21.22). Nos llama a buscar la reconciliación y el perdón; incluso nos advierte que debemos dejar nuestra ofrenda en el altar e ir antes a reconciliarnos con quien nos haya herido (5,23.24). Es la ley del amor llevada al extremo.

San Pablo, en el pasaje de la Primera Carta a los Corintios que leemos hoy, habla de la sabiduría divina, misteriosa, oculta, que ahora nos ha sido revelada por el Espíritu (1 Cor 2,7.10), aquel que nos fortalece para que imitemos a Cristo en Su justicia y llevemos la ley a la plenitud. El mundo necesita nuestro testimonio.

Obedezcamos y enseñemos estos mandamientos, para ser grandes en el reino de los cielos (cf. Mt 5,19). Que Dios los bendiga.

Why genuflect? IT IS EASY to “go through the motions” as Catholics, and one of the easiest

gestures to forget is the genuflection. Often we will find ourselves mindlessly walking into church, finding a pew and kneeling quickly on one knee before sitting down. So why do Catholics genuflect when they walk into a church?

Historically speaking, the act of genuflecting on one knee comes from court etiquette and was done while in the presence of a medieval king as a sign of respect and a pledge of service. Christians adopted this custom over time, and it became fully integrated into the liturgy of the Roman Rite by the 16th century.

And so we bend on one knee whenever we pass in front of the tabernacle. As Catholics we believe that Jesus is truly present, Body, Blood, soul and divinity in the Holy Eucharist and so when we genuflect, we do so because we are in God’s presence. This also means that Catholics should only genuflect when there is a tabernacle present with the Precious Body within it. But on Good Friday, for example, when the tabernacle is emptied and the doors are open, we do not need to genuflect. A simple bow is substituted whenever the Eucharist is not present.

So when you enter a church, look for the red sanctuary lamp. If it is lit, that means Jesus is present and the proper response is to genuflect to show your love and honor.

¿Por qué hacer la genuflexión? ES TAN FÁCIL hacer las cosas maquinalmente y olvidar su significado, que

como católicos es eso lo que hacemos a veces con un gesto tan sencillo como hacer la genuflexión. A veces entramos a la iglesia distraídos, buscamos un banco y doblamos la rodilla apresuradamente antes de sentarnos. Pero, ¿por qué hacer la genuflexión cuando entramos a la iglesia?

Históricamente la genuflexión es vestigio de la etiqueta de las cortes medievales, algo que se hacía en presencia del rey como señal de respeto y prenda de servicio. Los cristianos adoptaron la costumbre que se integró a la liturgia del Rito Romano durante el siglo 16.

Y por eso doblamos la rodilla cuando pasamos delante del tabernáculo. Los católicos creemos que Jesús está realmente presente en la Sagrada Eucaristía, Cuerpo, Sangre, alma y divinidad. Y por eso nos arrodillamos: porque estamos en la presencia de Dios. Esto quiere decir, sin embargo, que solamente nos arrodillamos cuando el Santísimo Sacramento se encuentra dentro del sagrario. El Viernes Santo, por ejemplo, cuando el sagrario está vacío y su puerta abierta, no tenemos que hacer la genuflexión. Cuando la Eucaristía no está presente, basta con una leve inclinación de cabeza.

De manera que cuando entre a la iglesia, busque la lámpara roja que indica, si está encendida, que Jesús está allí en el tabernáculo. En ese caso, lo correcto es hacer la genuflexión para demostrar nuestro amor y honrarlo.

Lent starts on Wednesday, February 26. On Ash Wednesday there will be a Mass in English with imposition of ashes at 8 am and again at 5 pm. Imposition of ashes outside of Mass, will take place at 12 noon. A bilingual Mass with imposition of ashes will take place at 7 pm, all in the church. La Cuaresma comienza el miércoles 26 de febrero. Sketches of St. Hugh’s Life One incident that dramatically illustrates how St.

Hugh resisted violent men was his quelling of the anti-Jewish riots that broke out in his diocese and other places in England after the death of King Henry II.

Henry’s government had protected the Jews, perhaps out of self-interest since they supplied capital to run the kingdom. But after Henry’s death, and with his son’s departure to the crusade, the mobs turned against the Jews in many places. When they burst into the cathedral at Lincoln, St. Hugh dashed into the raging mob and pronounced excommunication against those who persisted in this violence. Although horrible massacres occurred elsewhere, there was none at Lincoln.

The Jews of Lincoln remembered his courage on their behalf. When his body was brought to the cathedral for burial, the Jews also came and cried out that Hugh had been a true servant of the great God.

Semblanza de San Hugo

Un incidente que demuestra cómo San Hugo resistía la violencia es su intervención en los motines anti-judíos ocurridos en su diócesis y otros lugares de Inglaterra a la muerte de Enrique II.

El gobierno de este rey los había protegido, quizás por interés ya que los judíos ponían el capital necesario para el funcionamiento del reino. Pero a la muerte de Enrique y partida de su hijo a la cruzada, las turbas se volvieron contra los judíos en muchos lugares. Cuando irrumpieron en la catedral de Lincoln, San Hugo se presentó ante la turba, pronunciando excomuniones contra los que persistieran en la violencia. Message for Lent 2015

When the people of God are converted to his love, they find answers to the questions that history continually raises. One

of the most urgent challenges … is precisely the globalization of indifference. Indifference to our neighbour and to God also

represents a real temptation for us Christians. [W]e need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and

trouble our conscience.

God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between

heaven and earth, opens once for all. The Church is like the hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of God’s word, her celebration of the

sacraments and her witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6). But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which

God comes into the world and the world comes to him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded.

God’s people, then, need this interior renewal, lest we become indifferent and withdraw into ourselves.

Mensaje de Cuaresma 2015

Cuando el pueblo de Dios se convierte a su amor, encuentra las respuestas a las preguntas que la historia le plantea continuamente. Uno de los desafíos más urgentes (…) es el de la globalización de la indiferencia. La indiferencia hacia el prójimo y hacia Dios es una tentación real también para los cristianos. Por eso, necesitamos oír (…) el grito de los profetas que levantan su voz y nos despiertan.

Dios no es indiferente al mundo, sino que lo ama hasta el punto de dar a su Hijo por la salvación de cada hombre. En la encarnación, en la vida terrena, en la muerte y resurrección del Hijo de Dios, se abre definitivamente la puerta entre Dios y el hombre, entre el cielo y la tierra. Y la Iglesia es como la mano que tiene abierta esta puerta mediante la proclamación de la Palabra, la celebración de los sacramentos, el testimonio de la fe que actúa por la caridad (cf. Ga 5,6). Sin embargo, el mundo tiende a cerrarse en sí mismo y a cerrar la puerta a través de la cual Dios entra en el mundo y el mundo en Él. Así, la mano, que es la Iglesia, nunca debe sorprenderse si es rechazada, aplastada o herida.

El pueblo de Dios, por tanto, tiene necesidad de renovación, para no ser indiferente y para no cerrarse en sí mismo.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast for all Catholics between 18 and 59 years of age. One full meal and two smaller, meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics 14 years and older are bound to

abstain from meat.

Look What’s Happening in the Classroom!

The first grade class received a special visit from University of Miami shark researcher Ms. Julia Saltzman. She spoke to the students about the benefits of shark tagging and the importance of conserving our oceans and these magnificent creatures. The children had a blast holding real shark jaws and getting to name and track their very own shark.

The middle school presented a Night at the Museum, where historical wax figures came to life! An integration of research paper, poster presentation, media creation, public speaking, and acting. Congratulations to the middle school for an amazing event!
